Aims: Left atrial (LA) volume index (LAVI) in chronic heart failure (HF) predicts cardiovascular outcomes. However, the association between LAVI reduction during acute decompensated HF (ADHF) and its prognostic potential is limited. We hypothesized that LA reverse remodelling (LARR) after ADHF therapy would be associated with better clinical outcomes.

Background: The characteristics of patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are recipients of public assistance in Japan, and the adequacy of their medical care have not been reported previously.
Methods: The records of patients with CKD stage G5 who visited nine facilities in Japan from April to June 2013 were retrospectively reviewed to compare the characteristics and care of recipients of public assistance with those of non-recipients. Receiving a presentation of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) options and polypharmacy were used as indicators of suboptimal medical care.

Background: The benefit of prehospital 12‑lead electrocardiogram (PH-ECG) performed by emergency medical service personnel at the site of first medical contact (FMC) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with cardiogenic shock (CS-STEMI) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of PH-ECG on door-to-device time in patients with CS-STEMI.
Methods: This study enrolled CS-STEMI (Killip class IV) patients who were transferred directly to hospitals by ambulance (n = 517) from the Kanagawa Acute Cardiovascular Registry database.

Background: Curved varus osteotomy (CVO) is an effective femoral head-preserving surgical procedure for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) classified as type B or C1 according to the Japanese Investigation Committee (JIC) classification; it reportedly provides better postoperative outcomes than transtrochanteric rotational osteotomy (TRO). We have developed a new procedure called spherical varus rotational osteotomy (SVRO) in which osteotomy of the femur into a spherical shape is followed by varus and anterior rotation using navigation to increase indications and improve postoperative outcomes.
Methods: Nine joints of eight patients who underwent SVRO and could be followed up for > 1 year were included in the study.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the location where the femoral artery contacts the vastus medialis at the adductor tendon hiatus, which is important when using the subvastus approach in medial closed wedge distal femoral osteotomy. We evaluated the correlation between differences in height, vastus medialis morphology, and lower limb alignment.
Methods: Sixty knees (16 male, 44 female) that underwent plain computer tomography (CT) were included.

Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI), is routinely prescribed as first-line therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer, regardless of the presence of the T790M resistance mutation. This study reports a rare case of Factor V inhibitor detection during osimertinib therapy in a patient with lung adenocarcinoma. These findings underscore the importance of vigilant monitoring for coagulation abnormalities during EGFR-TKI therapy.

Objectives: Despite otitis media and various disease processes being associated with endolymphatic hydrops (EH), an exact explanation of the pathophysiology has yet to be reported. This study aimed to investigate the changes in the cochlear lateral wall structures and their potential correlation with the presence and severity of cochlear EH in acute and chronic otitis media cases. The investigations were conducted in both chinchilla animal model and human temporal bone specimens.

Background: Liquid embolization in neuroendovascular procedures carries the risk of embolizing an inappropriate vessel. Operators must pay close attention to multiple vessels during the procedure to avoid ischemic complications. We report our experience with real time artificial intelligence (AI) assisted liquid embolization and evaluate its performance.

Older adults often experience poor oral functions, hindering rehabilitation post-acute disease treatment. However, characteristics of hospitalized patients who would benefit from professional oral-health management (POHM) have not been clarified. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate systemic and oral characteristics of patients requiring POHM during hospitalization in a convalescent hospital.

Objectives: The efficacy of uncovered self-expandable metal stents (UCSEMS) versus fully covered self-expandable metal stents for distal malignant biliary obstruction remains controversial. Additionally, the heterogeneity of the disease conditions has been indicated in previous studies because pancreatic and non-pancreatic cancers have different characteristics in clinical course. Therefore, the etiology of biliary obstruction necessitates investigations stratified by primary disease.

Background: Clinical data supporting the target haemoglobin range in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) are scarce. This study investigated the association between haemoglobin levels and all-cause mortality in Japanese patients undergoing PD using data from a nationwide dialysis registry.
Methods: A total of 4875 patients aged ≥18 years who were undergoing PD at the end of 2012 were analysed.
