Background: One critical issue that impairs the therapeutic effects of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in root canal disinfection is the insufficient penetration of photosensitizer into dentinal tubules. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the treatments in enhancing photosensitizers' penetrability for aPDT in root canal therapy.

Methods: Thirty premolars with a single root canal were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10), using Methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer and treated with different approaches: sonic-assisted diffusing group, ultrasonic-assisted diffusing group and the control without treatment.

Background: Existing implant materials cannot meet the essential multifunctional requirements of repairing infected bone defects, such as antibacterial and osteogenesis abilities. A promising strategy to develop a versatile biomimicry composite of the natural bone structure may be accomplished by combining a multifunctional nanoparticle with an organic scaffold.

Methods: In this study, a quaternary ammonium silane-modified mesoporous silica containing nano silver (Ag@QHMS) was successfully synthesized and further combined with silk fibroin (SF) to fabricate the multifunctional nano-reinforced scaffold (SF-Ag@QHMS) using the freeze-drying method.

C is the second most abundant fullerene next to C. In this work, the exploration of C based electrides is proposed by theoretical encapsulation of group I/II trimetallic clusters into the C cage. Herein, we provide computational evidence that endohedral metallofullerenes M@C (M = Li, Na, K, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) can exist stably by calculating encapsulation energies and analyzing atom centered density matrix propagation molecular dynamics simulations.

Covalent organic framework composites have received great interest and regarded as new-generation porous materials in application of sample preparation. In this work, an agaric-like graphene oxide @ covalent organic framework (AGO@COF) composite was first synthesized and used as an ideal adsorbent for enrichment of trace cytokinins (CKs) due to its large specific surface area, rich in micro-mesopore and organic functional groups. The contact areas between AGO@COF composite and CKs were greatly increased due to the special agaric-like morphology, which would further improve the extraction efficiency.

Antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) inhibit ice recrystallization by a mechanism remaining largely elusive. The dynamics of AFGPs' hydration water and its involvement in the antifreeze activity, for instance, have not been identified conclusively. We herein, by simulation and theory, examined the picosecond site-specific water dynamics in the first hydration layer of a solvated AFGP8.

Identifying the right accessories for installing the dental implant is a vital element that impacts the sustainability and the reliability of the dental prosthesis when the medical case of a patient is not comprehensive. Dentists need to identify the implant manufacturer from the x-ray image to determine further treatment procedures. Identifying the manufacturer is a high-pressure task under the scaling volume of patients pending in the queue for treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different dental polymers, made through various manufacturing techniques, affect surface properties and microbial adhesion, particularly focusing on the impact of thermocycling (repeated temperature changes).
  • Six types of dental polymers were tested for surface roughness and hydrophobicity before and after thermocycling, followed by incubation with specific bacteria and fungi to assess microbial adhesion levels.
  • Results indicated that CAD/CAM polymers displayed lower microbial adhesion compared to conventional polymers, showing that surface roughness mainly influences adhesion, while thermocycling generally increased surface roughness and microbial adhesion for most materials.
