Sci Rep

Department of Anesthesiology, Fujian Children's Hospital, (Fujian Branch of Shanghai Children's Medical Center), College of Clinical Medicine for Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, China.

Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication that is associated with chronic kidney disease, early postsurgical mortality, and prolonged hospital stays. Preterm neonates who undergo surgery are at risk factors for AKI due to underdeveloped kidneys. To date, little is known about the incidence and perioperative risk factors for AKI in preterm neonates undergoing noncardiac surgery.

Alteration of Maternal Serum Ferritin in Pregnancy and Maternal-fetal Infections: A retrospective cohort study.

Pak J Med Sci

August 2024

Huihui Huang Department of Obstetrics, Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital; College of Clinical Medicine for Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, Fujian Province 350001, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the link between changes in serum ferritin levels during pregnancy and the occurrence of chorioamnionitis and neonatal sepsis among a large group of pregnant women in Fujian, China.
  • The research included data from 8506 clinical records, finding a significant difference in serum ferritin levels between those with confirmed chorioamnionitis and those without, while no significant difference was noted for neonatal sepsis.
  • The results suggest that while alterations in serum ferritin may serve as a predictor for chorioamnionitis during pregnancy, they do not effectively indicate the risk of neonatal sepsis.

Trafficking circuit of CD8 T cells between the intestine and bone marrow governs antitumour immunity.

Nat Cell Biol

August 2024

Key Laboratory of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology in National Health Commission, Pediatric Translational Medicine Institute, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTU-SM), Shanghai, China.

Immunotherapy elicits a systemic antitumour immune response in peripheral circulating T cells. However, the T cell trafficking circuit between organs and their contributions to antitumour immunity remain largely unknown. Here we show in multiple mouse leukaemia models that high infiltration of leukaemic cells in bone marrow (BM) stimulates the transition of CD8CD44CD62L central memory T cells into CD8CD44CD62L T cells, designated as inter-organ migratory T cells (T cells).

There are more than 70 million people worldwide living with epilepsy, with most experiencing the onset of epilepsy in childhood. Despite the availability of more than 20 anti-seizure medications, approximately 30% of epilepsy patients continue to experience unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. This situation places a heavy burden on patients' families and society.

Article Synopsis
  • Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients show considerable variability in treatment responses, which impacts their overall survival, prompting this study to investigate the demographics linked to better outcomes from radiotherapy.
  • Using the SEER database, researchers analyzed 42,824 SCLC patients from 2004 to 2015, dividing them into radiotherapy (20,360 patients) and non-radiotherapy (22,464 patients) groups, and employed methods like propensity score matching and Kaplan-Meier analysis to assess survival rates.
  • The results indicated that radiotherapy significantly improved median overall survival (9 months vs. 6 months) and cancer-specific survival (10 months vs. 7 months) compared to no radiotherapy, with notable long

December 2024

Fujian Children's Hospital (Fujian Branch of Shanghai Children's Medical Center), College of Clinical Medicine for Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, 350000, Fujian, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how body mass index (BMI) may cause polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) using genetic data from a platform called Mendelian randomization (MR).
  • - Analysis of 427 genetic variants linked to BMI showed a strong and positive association with PCOS, indicating that higher BMI increases the risk of developing this syndrome.
  • - The results also suggest a two-way relationship, where genetic predisposition to PCOS can lead to increased BMI, highlighting an interconnected causal loop between the two conditions.

Sentrin/small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO)-specific proteases (SENPs) perform pivotal roles in SUMO maturation and recycling, which modulate the balance of SUMOylation/de-SUMOylation and spatiotemporal functions of SUMOylation targets. The malfunction of SENPs often results in cellular dysfunction and various diseases. However, studies rarely investigated the correlation between SENP2 and lung cancer.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone induces insulin resistance in adipocytes via endoplasmic reticulum stress.

Endocr Connect

August 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital, Fujian Children's Hospital, Fuzhou, China.

Abstract: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is closely related to insulin resistance, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level is an independent factor for insulin resistance associated with subclinical hypothyroidism. This study aims to explore the effects of TSH levels on insulin signal transduction in adipocytes and to establish the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in this process. In this study, the SCH mouse model was established, and 3T3-L1 adipocytes were treated with TSH or tunicamycin (TM), with or without 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA), an inhibitor of ER stress.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in irreversible loss of sensory and motor functions, and most SCIs are incurable with current medical practice. One of the hardest challenges in treating SCI is the development of a dysfunctional pathological microenvironment, which mainly comprises excessive inflammation, deposition of inhibitory molecules, neurotrophic factor deprivation, glial scar formation, and imbalance of vascular function. To overcome this challenge, implantation of functional biomaterials at the injury site has been regarded as a potential treatment for modulating the dysfunctional microenvironment to support axon regeneration, remyelination at injury site, and functional recovery after SCI.
