State Key Laboratory for Ecological Pest Control of Fujian and Taiwan Crops, Vector-borne Virus Research Center, College of Plant Protection, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Fuzhou 350002, China.

Bacteria-like phytoplasmas alternate between plant and insect hosts, secreting proteins that disrupt host development. In this study, we sequenced the complete genome of "Candidatus Phytoplasma oryzae" strain HN2022, associated with rice yellow dwarf (RYD) disease, using PacBio HiFi technology. The strain was classified within the 16Sr XI-B subgroup.

Near complete assembly of Pyricularia penniseti infecting Cenchrus grass identified its eight core chromosomes.

Sci Data

October 2024

National Engineering Research Center of JUNCAO Technology, College of Juncao Science and Ecology, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Fuzhou, 350002, China.

Fungi from the Pyricularia genus cause blast disease in many economically important crops and grasses, such as wheat, rice, and Cenchrus grass JUJUNCAO. Structure variation associated with the gain and loss of effectors contributes largely to the adaptive evolution of this fungus towards diverse host plants. A telomere-to-telomere genome assembly would facilitate the identification of genome-wide structural variations through comparative genomics.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after cardiac surgery, especially in patients with existing kidney issues, and changes in platelet distribution width (PDW) may help predict AKI risk.
  • A study analyzed patients with preoperative renal dysfunction and measured PDW levels before and after surgery, finding a significant association between increased dPDW and the occurrence of postoperative AKI.
  • Results showed that 53.10% of patients developed AKI, with those in the highest dPDW quartile having nearly double the risk compared to those in the lowest quartile, highlighting the potential of dPDW as a predictive marker for AKI.

With the virus continuing to evolve, very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) and novel variant IBDV (nvIBDV) have become the predominant epidemic strains in China, exacerbated by the widespread use of attenuated vaccine strains (attIBDV), making a complex infection situation of IBDV in the field. Therefore, developing a rapid and accurate high-resolution melting curve quantitative reverse transcription PCR (HRM-qRT-PCR) for the identification and pathotyping of IBDV is crucial for clinical monitoring and disease control. Extensive data analysis and genome-screening of the three dominant IBDV pathotypes identified a specific region (nucleotides 2450-2603 in segment A) with distinct GC content as the detection target.

A novel method for the quantitative analysis of 56 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in human plasma was established on the basis of ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q/Orbitrap HRMS) in combination with accurate customized mass databases and isotopic internal standards. A streamlined, high-throughput, and high-recovery (RE) sample pretreatment method was developed. The method's performance was evaluated in terms of linearity, limit of quantification, RE, repeatability, reproducibility, and matrix effect.

October 2024

Department of Nephrology, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, No. 180 Fenglin Road, Shanghai 200032, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Hemodialysis-induced myocardial stunning (HIMS) is a common issue for patients on hemodialysis, marked by temporary heart muscle dysfunction linked to irregularities in mitochondrial function and ion levels (potassium and calcium).
  • The study used a rat model of chronic kidney disease to explore how manipulating mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels (mitoK) affects heart function during hemodialysis.
  • Results showed that activating mitoK with diazoxide improved mitochondrial and heart function, while blocking it with 5-HD worsened the conditions, suggesting that enhancing mitoK activity could be a potential treatment for HIMS.

Key Laboratory of Medical Molecular Virology of Ministries of Education and Health, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200032, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with limited understanding of B cell repertoires in patients; this study focused on the IgM repertoires in early RA (ERA) patients using advanced sequencing techniques.
  • - The findings revealed clonal expansion of IgM repertoires in ERA patients, with some dominant clones showing self- and poly-reactivity to autoantigens, which also existed in healthy individuals but were not expanded there.
  • - The ERA B cell repertoires showed increased somatic hypermutations, particularly in dominant clones, indicating a potential link between these changes and the disease's development, enhancing insights into RA's pathogenesis.
