Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, 66160, USA. Electronic address:

Plastics play a crucial role in modern life, but improper use and disposal have resulted in microplastics becoming widespread in the environment, raising significant concerns about both the environment and human health. Extensive research has explored the transformation mechanisms, bioaccumulation, ecological impacts, and health risks associated with microplastics. The present review first analyzes the migration, transformation, and degradation pathways of microplastics on a global scale, and then synthesizes current knowledge on the types, sources, and migration pathways of microplastics in soil, atmosphere, and aquatic environments, emphasizing transformation mechanisms like photo-aging and microbial degradation, and detailing their ecological and human health impacts.

January 2025

Center for Pan-third Pole Environment, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, China; Key Laboratory of Pan-third Pole Biogeochemical Cycling, Gansu Province, China. Electronic address:

The release of pathogens and DNA from the cryosphere (glacier, permafrost, and, sea ice) has become a new threat to society and environment. Due to enhanced glacier retreat, the size of glacier forefields has greatly expanded. Herein, we used a combination of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic methods and adopted a sequence-based approach to investigate the distribution and changing patterns of virulence factor genes (VFGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in two glacier forefields.

Two-photon photosensitizer for specific targeting and induction of tumor pyroptosis to elicit systemic immunity-boosting anti-tumor therapy.

Biomaterials

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Molecular Vaccinology and Molecular Diagnostics & Center for Molecular Imaging and Translational Medicine, School of Public Health, Xiamen University, Xiamen, 361102, China. Electronic address:

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has garnered increasing attention in cancer treatment due to its precise spatiotemporal selectivity and non-invasive nature. However, several challenges, including the inability of photosensitizers to discriminate between tumor and healthy tissues, as well as the limited tissue penetration depth of light sources, impede its broader application. To surmount these impediments, our research introduces a two-photon photosensitizer (TPSS) that specifically targets tumor overexpressing carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX), thereby exhibiting exceptional specificity for tumor cells.

Global climate change has become one of the most large-scale, widespread, and far-reaching challenges facing mankind. Against this background, China has proposed a "dual-carbon" target in 2020, which greatly demonstrates China's determination and commitment to carbon emission reduction, and the burden of realizing the "dual-carbon" target is mainly borne by heavy polluters. The burden of achieving the "dual-carbon" goal is mainly borne by the heavily polluting firms.

January 2025

Hainan Pharmaceutical Research and Development Science Park, Hainan Academy of Medical Sciences, Hainan Medical University, Haikou, China.

One new monomeric citrinin analog (1) and 42 known compounds (2-43) were isolated from Penicillium citrinum W22. The structure of 1 was determined by detailed analysis of the 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), HRESIMS, and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT)-based electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation. Penicitrinol A (2) and methyl 2-(2-acetyl-3,5-dihydroxy-4,6-dimethylphenyl) acetate (11) significantly inhibited renin-angiotensin system-selective lethal 3 (RSL3)-induced ferroptosis with half maximal effective concentration (EC) values of 1.

Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) has emerged as one of the best gene delivery vectors for human gene therapy in vivo. However, the clinical efficacy of rAAV gene therapy is often hindered by the host immune response against its transgene products. Endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1 (ERAP1) is specialised to process peptides presented by class I molecules of major histocompatibility complex.

Silicon is widely recognized as a promising anode material for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) due to exceptional specific capacity, abundant availability, and environmental sustainability. However, the considerable volume expansion and particle fragmentation of Si during cycling lead to significant performance degradation, limiting its practical application. Herein, the development of a pre-lithiated Si-based composite anode (c-LiSi) is presented, designed to address the key challenges faced by Si-based anodes, namely severe volume changes and low electrochemical stability.
