Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a severe neurological injury during infancy, often resulting in long-term cognitive deficits. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of Edaravone (EDA), a free radical scavenger, and elucidate the potential role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in mediating these effects in neonatal HIE rats. Using the Rice-Vannucci model, HIE was induced in neonatal rats, followed by immediate administration of EDA after the hypoxic-ischemic insult.

Introduction: Space optimization in architectural planning is a crucial task for maximizing functionality and improving user experience in built environments. Traditional approaches often rely on manual planning or supervised learning techniques, which can be limited by the availability of labeled data and may not adapt well to complex spatial requirements.
Methods: To address these limitations, this paper presents a novel architectural planning robot driven by unsupervised learning for automatic space optimization.

Background: Ground-glass opacity (GGO) on computed tomography (CT) has been suggested as a potential prognostic factor in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), but its significance in patients with pathological stage IA3 LUAD, particularly in relation to micropapillary (MIP) status, remains unclear. This study addresses the clinical need to stratify patients based on GGO and MIP status to optimize prognosis prediction and follow-up strategies.
Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted on 411 patients with pathological stage IA3 LUAD, enrolled between July 2012 and July 2020.

In the evolving landscape of materials science, the journey from traditional composite materials to liquid-solid composites has marked a significant shift. Composite materials, typically solid state, have long been the cornerstone of many applications due to their structural stability and mechanical properties. However, the emergence of liquid-solid composites has introduced a new paradigm, leveraging the dynamic composite interfaces and fluidic nature of liquids.

Rapid advances in vaccine technology are becoming increasingly important in tackling global health crises caused by respiratory virus infections. While traditional vaccines, primarily administered by intramuscular injection, have proven effective, they often fail to provide the broad upper respiratory tract mucosal immunity, which is urgently needed for first-line control of respiratory viral infections. Furthermore, traditional intramuscular vaccines may not adequately address the immune escape of emerging virus variants.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are a unique group of monocopper enzymes that exhibit remarkable ability to catalyze the oxidative cleavage of recalcitrant carbohydrate substrates, such as cellulose and chitin, by utilizing O or HO as the oxygen source. One of the key challenges in understanding the catalytic mechanism of LPMOs lies in deciphering how they activate dioxygen using diverse reductants. To shed light on this intricate process, we conducted in-depth investigations using quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) metadynamics simulations, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Coal-bearing soils (CBS), products of coal-bearing strata weathering, are particularly prone to disintegration due to the effects of dry-wet cycles. Static water disintegration tests, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), and mineral chemical composition analyses were conducted on CBS. The disintegration evolution of CBS is characterized by granularity entropy and is analyzed concerning the disintegration ratio.

The impact of changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) on the prognosis of patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) receiving venous-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) remains unclear. A single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) and a bulk RNA-sequencing (bulk RNA-seq) data sets of pre-ECMO PBMCs of CS patients were obtained from the gene expression omnibus database, which were analyzed using the "Seurat" and "limma" packages, respectively. The counts of different PMBC cell types, differential expression genes (DEGs), pathway enrichment analysis, cell-cell communication analysis, pseudotime analysis, and immune cell infiltration analysis were compared between VA-ECMO groups with different prognoses.

Soft robotics has undergone considerable progress driven by materials that can effectively transduce external stimuli into mechanical actuation. Here, we report the development of a photothermal-responsive hydrogel actuator with shape memory capabilities inspired by the adaptive locomotion of sea cucumbers. This actuator is based on sea cucumber peptides (SCP) and a liquid metal (LM) hydrogel network that is responsive to near-infrared (NIR) light.

Brain neural networks intricately integrate excitatory and inhibitory synaptic potentials to modulate the generation or suppression of action potentials, laying the foundation for neuronal computation. Although bioinspired nanofluidic systems have replicated some synaptic functions, complete integration of postsynaptic potentials remains unachieved. In this work, the developed ion concentration gradient nanofluidic memristor (ICGNM) modulates memristive effects through ion concentration gradient adjustments and exhibits synaptic plasticity phenomena, including paired-pulse facilitation, paired-pulse depression, and spike-rate-dependent plasticity.

Serpins (serine protease inhibitors) constitute a superfamily of proteins with functional diversity and unusual conformational flexibility. In insects, serpins act as multiple inhibitors, by forming inactive acyl-enzyme complexes, in regulating Spätzles activation, phenoloxidases (POs) activity, and other cytokines. In this study, we present the cloning and characterization of Octodonta nipae serpin2 (OnSPN2), a 415 residues protein homologous to Tenebrio molitor 42Dd-like.

Narrowband photodetection with selective light detection in ultraviolet (UV) range is particularly pronounced in specialized such as targeted wavelength imaging and UV-phototherapy. In contrast to conventional strategies, ferroelectric materials with pronounced bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) provide a novel asymmetric carrier generation concept for achieving filterless spectrally selective photodetection. Herein, for the first time, the realization of self-powered filterless narrowband UV photodetection is demonstrated in bulk single crystals of a newly developed halide perovskite ferroelectric, 2FEAEAPbCl (2FEEPC), which exhibits a wide bandgap of 3.

To understand the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its risk factors in Fujian Province during 1990-2019. Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, the incidence rate, mortality rate and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of CKD in Fujian from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. An age-period-cohort model was used to estimate the effects of age, period, and cohort on age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) of CKD.

Controlling the microstructure of semiconducting polymers is critical for optimizing thermoelectric performance, yet remains challenging, requiring complex processing techniques like alignment. In this study, a straightforward strategy is introduced to enhance the thermoelectric properties of semi-crystalline polymer films by incorporating minimal amounts of nucleating agents, a method widely used in traditional polymer industries. By blending less than 1 wt% of N,N'-(1,4-phenyl)diisonicotinamide (PDA) into poly(2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PBTTT-C14), controlled modulation of crystallization behavior is achieved, resulting in reduced structural disorder and enhanced charge carrier mobility.

Vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque is a type of plaque that poses a significant risk of high mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease. Ultrasound has long been used for carotid atherosclerosis screening and plaque assessment due to its safety, low cost and non-invasive nature. However, conventional ultrasound techniques have limitations such as subjectivity, operator dependence, and low inter-observer agreement, leading to inconsistent and possibly inaccurate diagnoses.
