Background: Social detachment includes the subjective aspect "loneliness" and the objective aspect "social isolation," but tools to assess both dimensions are limited. This study aims to develop a questionnaire, the Social Detachment Questionnaire for Older Population (SDQO), that considers multiple dimensions of social detachment simultaneously.
Methods: The study collected 600 valid samples from individuals aged 55 and above to examine the psychometric properties of the developed SDQO.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by a notable sex disparity in incidence and tumor aggressiveness. Revealing differences in genetic landscapes between male and female HCCs may expand the understanding of sexual disparities mechanisms and assist the development of precision medicine. Although reports on the sex disparity of HCC are accumulated, studies focusing on sex-related biomarkers among Asian populations remain limited.

Identification of an early biomarker and effective testing device to differentiate dry eye disease secondary to autoimmune disease (Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease) from non-Sjögren's dry eye disease are prerequisites for appropriate treatment. We aimed to demonstrate the capacity of a new photo-detection device to evaluate tear lactoferrin levels as a tool for differentiating systemic conditions associated with dry eye disease. Patients with non-Sjögren's and Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease (n = 54 and n = 52, respectively) and controls (n = 11) were enrolled.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether quantitative changes in lymphocyte subsets and gene expression in peripheral blood (PB) cells are related to the clinical manifestations and pathogenesis of lupus nephritis (LN).
Methods: We enrolled 95 pediatric-onset SLE patients with renal involvement who presented with 450 clinical episodes suspicious for LN flare. Percentages of lymphocyte subsets at each episode were determined.

Objective: The most common extraintestinal pathogen and infection site is uropathogenic (UPEC), which causes urinary tract infections (UTIs). UPEC is also a common pathogen in bloodstream infections; in severe cases, it can lead to death. Although host and bacterial virulence factors have been demonstrated to be associated with UTI pathogenesis, the role of the related contributing factors in UTI and urinary source bacteremia is not yet fully understood.

The presence of spread through air spaces (STASs) in early-stage lung adenocarcinoma is a significant prognostic factor associated with disease recurrence and poor outcomes. Although current STAS detection methods rely on pathological examinations, the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) offers opportunities for automated histopathological image analysis. This study developed a deep learning (DL) model for STAS prediction and investigated the correlation between the prediction results and patient outcomes.

The inhibitor of DNA-binding 2 (ID2) plays a major role in tumor dedifferentiation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Studies have indicated an inverse correlation between ID2 expression and NSCLC cell invasiveness. However, the mechanisms through which ID2 activation is regulated are currently unclear.

Background: Thirst is a common symptom among patients with endotracheal intubation in the intensive care unit (ICU), with an estimated prevalence of 88%.
Purpose: This study was designed to compare the effectiveness of cold saline spray and cold water spray in alleviating thirst, and to explore the maintenance and sustained effects of both groups in relieving thirst among patients with endotracheal intubation in the ICU.
Methods: Patients with indwelling tracheal tubes in the medical ICU were recruited from one medical center in northern Taiwan and randomly assigned to either the cold saline (n = 18) or cold water (n = 18) group.

Oxidative stress plays a key role in chronic kidney disease (CKD) development and progression, inducing kidney cell damage, inflammation, and fibrosis. However, effective therapeutic interventions to slow down CKD advancement are currently lacking. The multifaceted pharmacological effects of molecular hydrogen (H) have made it a promising therapeutic avenue.

Aims: This study investigated the association between the frequency of screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) versus the development of DR and corresponding medical expenses among patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Methods: This longitudinal, population-based study used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2004 to 2020) as a data source. Propensity score matching (PSM) (sex, age, comorbidities and concurrent medication use) was employed in the grouping of T2DM patients according to different frequency of DR screening.

Angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4) is a secretory glycoprotein involved in regulating glucose homeostasis in non-pregnant subjects. However, its role in glucose metabolism during pregnancy and the pathophysiology of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains elusive. Thus, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between ANGPTL4 and GDM and investigate the pathophysiology of placental ANGPTL4 in glucose metabolism.

Early confirmation of sustained virologic response (SVR) or viral relapse after direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is essential based on public health perspectives, particularly for patients with high risk of nonadherence to posttreatment follow-ups. A total of 1011 patients who achieved end-of-treatment virologic response, including 526 receiving fixed-dose pangenotypic DAAs, and 485 receiving other types of DAAs, who had available off-treatment weeks 4 and 12 serum HCV RNA data to confirm SVR at off-treatment week 12 (SVR) or viral relapse were included. The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of SVR to predict patients with SVR or viral relapse were reported.

Vascular calcification (VC) is the ectopic deposition of calcium-containing apatite within vascular walls, exhibiting a high prevalence in older adults, and those with diabetes or chronic kidney disease. VC is a subclinical cardiovascular risk trait that increases mortality and functional deterioration. However, effective treatments for VC remain largely unavailable despite multiple attempts.
