Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with a myriad of extrahepatic manifestations (EHM), as well as the production of autoantibodies, including rheumatoid factor (RF). This study aims to elucidate whether serum levels of RF change before and after HCV eradication, and whether these changes differ according to the type of therapy used. This is a retrospective cohort study of adults with chronic HCV infection treated with interferon-free or interferon-based regimens.

Electronic address:

Background/aim: Critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a rare but devastating complication of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection in children and adolescents. This study aimed to assess the risk factors for, and evaluate the vaccine effectiveness against, critical COVID-19 during the 2022 Omicron Surge in Taiwan.

Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 41 pediatric patients with critical COVID-19 (which required mechanical ventilation, inotropic agents, extracorporeal membrane oxygenator, or resulting in in-hospital death) and 793 with non-critical COVID-19 who were hospitalized at National Taiwan University Children Hospital during the 2022 Omicron Surge.

Background: Autologous minced cartilage is a method for cartilage defect repair, and our study focuses on a newly developed biphasic cylindrical osteochondral construct designed for use in human knees. We aimed to compare its clinical effectiveness and safety with microfracture, the commonly utilized reparative treatment for knee chondral or osteochondral defects.

Materials And Methods: Conducted as a prospective multicenter, randomized controlled, non-inferiority trial across nine hospitals, the study involved 92 patients with International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) grade 3 to 4 chondral or osteochondral lesions on femoral condyles.

Circulating YKL-40 levels but not CHI3L1 or TRIB1 gene variants predict long-term outcomes in patients with angiographically confirmed multivessel coronary artery disease.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, 289 Jianguo Road, Xindian District, New Taipei City, 23142, Taiwan.

YKL-40 is significantly associated with the prevalence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). YKL-40 levels are significantly associated with variations in the CHI3L1 and TRIB1 genes. We investigated candidate genes for YKL-40 levels and evaluated the prognostic value of this biomarker and corresponding variants for long-term outcomes in patients with CAD.

In the past, patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) were advised to avoid exercise due to concerns that it might strain cardiac function and exacerbate symptoms. However, recent evidence indicates that structured exercise programs can enhance outcomes and improve health-related quality of life for these patients. Consequently, exercise rehabilitation is now recommended in international guidelines as a key component of PH management.

Article Synopsis
  • Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common hereditary disorder that leads to severe kidney issues, and measuring total kidney volume (TKV) helps evaluate its severity, but manual measurements are often imprecise and slow.
  • This study used MRI data from 30 ADPKD patients and 10 healthy controls to automate TKV measurement with a U-net deep learning model, improving speed and accuracy compared to traditional methods.
  • Results indicated that the deep learning model's TKV estimates were close to those of medical professionals, with lower variability and strong performance metrics, showcasing its potential as a reliable diagnostic tool for ADPKD.

Neuropathic pain arises as a consequence of injury or disease in the peripheral or central nervous system. Clinical cases have shown that spine postoperative chronic neuropathic pain remains a troublesome issue in medical treatment due to the presence of various degrees of peridural fibrosis and different inflammatory factors after spinal surgery. To address this issue, we developed a new neuropathic mice model that successfully simulates the real clinical situation by applying oxidative regenerative cellulose to L5 DRG (dorsal root ganglion).
