A recent resurgence in the incidence of syphilis has sparked a new interest in this old disease. Syphilitic uveitis remains a challenging disease, among the variable syphilis infections, due to the diagnostic complexity and the wide clinical manifestations. Here, we provide recommendations regarding clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with syphilitic uveitis in Taiwan based on an expert meeting and consensus from experienced uveitis specialists.

Objectives: The elderly are disproportionately affected by age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Despite being a well-known tool for ARHL evaluation, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening version (HHIE-S) has only traditionally been used for direct screening using self-reported outcomes. This work uses a novel integration of machine learning approaches to improve the predicted accuracy of the HHIE-S tool for ARHL in older adults.

Importance: A core component of delivering care of head and neck diseases is an adequate workforce. The World Health Organization report, Multi-Country Assessment of National Capacity to Provide Hearing Care, captured primary workforce estimates from 68 member states in 2012, noting that response rates were a limitation and that updated more comprehensive data are needed.
Objective: To establish comprehensive workforce metrics for global otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) with updated data from more countries/territories.

A 64-year-old lady presented as right vertebral artery occlusion and brain stem stroke (Figure 1A). Emergent thrombectomy opened the artery, but it re-occluded 10 minutes later (Figure 1B,C). Intravascular ultrasound showed heavy plaque burden and guided a balloon-expandable stenting successfully (Figure 1D-F).

This retrospective study evaluated the characteristics and response of subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment in eyes with myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV). The visual acuity (VA) was assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months after initiating anti-VEGF treatment in 116 patients (119 eyes) with SHRM and myopic CNV. Multimodal imaging, including color fundus photography, fluorescein angiography (FA), and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A), were performed.

Background: Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI) drug regimens are the mainstay treatment options for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Herein, We examined the association between clinical response to AChEI and white matter hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan at baseline.
Methods: Between 2020 and 2021, we recruited 101 individuals with a clinical diagnosis of probable AD.

Background And Objectives: Among individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD), e4 carriers with increased white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) may selectively be at increased risk of cognitive impairment. Given that the cholinergic system plays a crucial role in cognitive impairment, this study aimed to identify how status modulates the associations between dementia severity and white matter hyperintensities in cholinergic pathways.
Methods: From 2018 to 2022, we recruited participants ( e4 carriers, = 49; non-carriers, = 117) from the memory clinic of Cardinal Tien Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan.

: to describe current scientific knowledge regarding the treatment options in advanced oropharyngeal cancer. The standard care for advanced oropharyngeal cancer (OPSCC) has been chemoradiotherapy, although surgical approaches followed by adjuvant treatment have been proposed. The best therapy for each patient should be decided by an interdisciplinary tumour-board.

This study explored the effects of sterilization conditions on the formation of furan and its 10 derivatives in canned foods with a sterilizing value (F0) at 4. The contents of furans were determined by SPME arrow-GC-MS/MS, along with the furan precursors analyzed for elucidating the possible mechanism of furan formation. Results revealed that the total furan contents rose substantially in canned meat paste, tomato mackerel, chicken puree, tomato paste, pineapple slice, pineapple juice and carrot juice following sterilization.

Introduction: Combined phacovitrectomy is gaining popularity due to efficiency and immediate visual improvement. However, concerns regarding erroneous intraocular lens (IOL) calculation in combination surgery are increasing, such as myopic shift owing to a thick macula and consequent underestimation of the axial length. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the refractive outcomes of combined phacovitrectomy in patients with highly myopic and non-highly myopic eyes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is one of the most well-studied and important factors that increase the risk of prefrailty in older people in Taiwan. This study was conducted to examine whether metabolic biomarkers, lifestyle behaviors, body composition, and chronic diseases are associated with frailty in older people with T2DM. We also observed how people manage their T2DM related to prefrailty.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a phenolic compound that has several bioactivities, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Here, we further investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of RA on rat A7r5 aortic smooth muscle cells with exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Our findings showed that low-dose RA (10-25 μM) did not influence the cell viability and morphology of A7r5 cells and significantly inhibited LPS-induced mRNA expression of the pro-inflammatory mediators TNFα, IL-8, and inducible NO synthase (iNOS).

Uveitis is a sight-threatening disease that can be associated with many different etiologies. Successful treatment of uveitis relies on accurate diagnosis and prompt efficient therapy. History taking, physical and ocular examinations, systemic evaluations, and response to treatment provide crucial information to differentiate possible etiologies involved in the pathophysiology of intraocular inflammation.
