The present study aims to generalize cultivar-specific tree phenology responses to winter and spring temperatures and assess the effectiveness of the Tabuenca test and various chill and heat accumulation models in predicting bloom dates for a wide range of climatic conditions and years. To this end, we estimated the dates of rest completion and blooming and correlated them with observed bloom dates for 14 peach and nectarine cultivars that were evaluated in 11 locations across Europe (Greece, France, Italy, Romania and Spain), within the EUFRIN cultivar testing trial network. Chill accumulation varied considerably among the studied sites, ranging from 45 Chill Portions (CP) in Murcia-Torre Pacheco (Spain) to 97-98 CP in Cuneo (Italy) and Bucharest (Romania).

Fruit color is an important trait in peach from the point of view of consumer preference, nutritional content, and diversification of fruit typologies. Several genes and phenotypes have been described for peach flesh and skin color, and although peach color knowledge has increased in the last few years, some fruit color patterns observed in peach breeding programs have not been carefully described. In this work, we first describe some peach mesocarp color patterns that have not yet been described in a collection of commercial peach cultivars, and we also study the genetic inheritance of the red dots present in the flesh (RDF) and red color around the stone (CAS) in several intra- and interspecific segregating populations for both traits.

In this study, three wastes based on potato peels and pulps, tomato seeds and wheat bran were used as basis for the preparation of a cheap medium to produce the bacterium PGP01. In flasks experiments, PGP01 growth at 25 °C in a medium based on frozen potato peels and pulp (FPP) with tryptone as a nitrogen source resulted in the maximum production compared to the commercial TSB medium. In the scale-up to 2 L bioreactors, FPP supplemented with tryptone, molasses, NaCl and KHPO allowed to reach similar biomass production than in the TSB medium.

The current lack of efficient methods for high throughput field phenotyping is a constraint on the goal of increasing durum wheat yields. This study illustrates a comprehensive methodology for phenotyping this crop's water use through the use of the two-source energy balance (TSEB) model employing very high resolution imagery. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with multispectral and thermal cameras was used to phenotype 19 durum wheat cultivars grown under three contrasting irrigation treatments matching crop evapotranspiration levels (ETc): 100%ETc treatment meeting all crop water requirements (450 mm), 50%ETc treatment meeting half of them (285 mm), and a rainfed treatment (122 mm).

Global analysis of the apple fruit microbiome: are all apples the same?

We present the first worldwide study on the apple (Malus × domestica) fruit microbiome that examines questions regarding the composition and the assembly of microbial communities on and in apple fruit. Results revealed that the composition and structure of the fungal and bacterial communities associated with apple fruit vary and are highly dependent on geographical location. The study also confirmed that the spatial variation in the fungal and bacterial composition of different fruit tissues exists at a global level.

Rhizosphere microorganisms enhance in vitro root and plantlet development of Pyrus and Prunus rootstocks.

The in vitro application of rhizosphere microorganisms led to a higher rooting percentage in Pyrus Py12 rootstocks and increased plant growth of Pyrus Py170 and Prunus RP-20. The rooting of fruit tree rootstocks is the most challenging step of the in vitro propagation process. The use of rhizosphere microorganisms to promote in vitro rooting and plant growth as an alternative to the addition of chemical hormones to culture media is proposed in the present study.
