This observational, multisite cohort study explored health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), including interrater agreement and ratings for this group relative to clinical cutoff scores and published means for healthy and chronically ill children. Participants (338 children ages 8-10 years, 45.9% male and their parents, 82.

Background: Immediate tissue expander (TE) breast reconstruction is reported to have the highest rate of postoperative infection among reconstructive modalities. The risk of infection is higher among patients treated at safety-net hospitals.
Objectives: The goal of this study was to identify significant contributing factors to the elevated infection risk at our major safety-net institution.

Purpose: Adverse events (AEs) during trauma resuscitation are common and heterogeneity in reporting limits comparisons between hospitals and systems. A recent modified Delphi study established a taxonomy of AEs that occur during trauma resuscitation. This tool was further refined to yield the Safety Threats and Adverse events in Trauma (STAT) taxonomy.

Radiofrequency devices have grown in popularity as minimally invasive options for the treatment of skin laxity in the face and neck. These treatments are often combined with liposuction procedures to provide enhanced tissue contraction alongside the reduction in adiposity. Proper patient selection and intraoperative technique are crucial to achieving the desired outcomes in a safe manner.

Background: Revision rhinoplasty is undoubtedly one of the most challenging procedures in facial plastic surgery. The complexity is compounded when there is a paucity of native septal cartilage to perform the required framework reconstruction. Harvest of autologous costal cartilage can result in increased operative times and possible secondary-site complications such as contour irregularity, poor scarring, and even pneumothorax.

Uniquely among mammalian organs, skin is capable of marked size change in adults, yet the mechanisms underlying this notable capacity are unclear. Here, we use a system of controlled tissue expansion in mice to uncover cellular and molecular determinants of skin growth. Through machine learning-guided three-dimensional tissue reconstruction, we capture morphometric changes in growing skin.

Unlabelled: Health literacy of plastic surgery patients may affect surgical decision-making and perioperative outcomes. In addition to consulting a plastic surgeon, patients often refer to online-based resources to learn about surgical options. The aim of this scoping review was to identify evidence detailing the state of health literacy of plastic surgery patients and available resources to highlight areas of improvement for clinical practice and future research.

Objective: Increased body weight has been associated with reduced muscle wasting in the early catabolic phase after a severe burn. Yet, overweight and obese non-burn children often exhibit impaired musculoskeletal function, which may lead to poor physical function (PF). We aimed to determine the association between body mass index (BMI) at discharge and self-reported PF and caregiver proxy-reported PF during recovery of burned children.

Cellular mechanisms and/or microbiological interactions which contribute to chronic diabetes related foot ulcers (DRFUs) were explored using serially collected tissue specimens from chronic DRFUs and control healthy foot skin. Total RNA was isolated for next-generation sequencing. We found differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and enriched hallmark gene ontology biological processes upregulated in chronic DRFUs which primarily functioned in the host immune response including: (i) Inflammatory response; (ii) TNF signalling via NFKB; (iii) IL6 JAK-STAT3 signalling; (iv) IL2 STAT5 signalling and (v) Reactive oxygen species.

Due to growing social acceptance, there has been an increasing number of gender-affirmation surgeries performed in North America. Most research in this patient population focuses on surgical outcomes and advancing techniques. However, little work has been done to study functional outcomes.

Hindfoot arthrodesis is often required for end-staged deformities, such as posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Although the need for hindfoot arthrodesis is generally accepted in severe deformities, there is a debate whether a double or triple arthrodesis should be performed. The aim of our systematic review is to review the fusion rates and mean time to fusion in double and triple arthrodesis.

Background: The use of biologic mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall in ventral hernia repair has been proposed as a viable alternative to synthetic mesh, particularly for high-risk patients and in contaminated settings. However, a comparison of clinical outcomes between the currently available biologic mesh types has yet to be performed.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 141 patients who had undergone ventral hernia repair with biologic mesh, including noncross-linked porcine ADM (NC-PADM) (n = 51), cross-linked porcine ADM (C-PADM) (n = 17), reinforced biologic ovine rumen (RBOR) (n = 36), and bovine ADM (BADM) (n = 37) at the Stanford University Medical Center between 2002 and 2020.
The creation of dead space in rhinoplasty creates a welcoming environment for erratic soft -tissue contraction. If rhinoplasty surgeons can control and reliably predict skin contraction and wound healing, rhinoplasty results will undoubtedly improve. Obliteration of dead space is a key component in rhinoplasty as it minimizes soft-tissue contraction, resulting in a more predictable outcome.

Purpose: To analyze the conjunctival changes, especially goblet cell populations, following Muller's muscle conjunctival resection (MMCR) by histologically evaluating pre and post-MMCR specimens.
Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of conjunctival samples sent for histologic evaluation from two patient populations: those who had previously undergone a MMCR and required repeat surgery and controls who underwent a MMCR surgery in a previously unoperated eyelid. Specimens underwent hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining to accentuate goblet cell identification and were evaluated by two ocular pathologists to quantify goblet cell populations and note other anatomical changes.

As the field of plastic surgery continues to advance, so too do the number and complexity of ethical challenges faced by plastic surgeons. There is a paucity of literature, however, focusing on ethics in plastic surgery. Therefore, the authors offer a timely special topic series discussing ethical issues relevant to the field of plastic surgery.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an infrequent, rapidly growing skin neoplasm that carries a greater probability of regional lymph node involvement, and a grim prognosis in advanced cases. While it is seen predominantly in old age in sun-exposed body parts, the prevalence varies among different races and geographical regions. Merkel cell polyomavirus and UV radiation-induced mutations contribute to its etiopathogenesis.

Iatrogenic jowling can be an unintended consequence of facial feminization surgery. Reduction of the mandible and chin without overlying changes to the soft tissue can lead to a redundant and deflated soft-tissue envelope, requiring a face lift to address jowling, cervicofacial laxity, and/or lower facial rhytids. Prospective quality-of-life outcomes data support this hypothesis, as patients who underwent mandible contouring with or without angle osteotomies were significantly more likely to express interest in face lift following facial feminization surgery on univariable analysis (90.
