Objectives: For patients with end-stage renal disease, thyroid diseases are common due to altered hormone excretion and transport, and for renal transplant recipients this is due to immunosuppressive drugs. We investigated the prevalence of thyroid disorders, including thyroid cancer, by fine-needle aspiration biopsy in kidney transplant candidates and recipients and estimated the outcomes.
Materials And Methods: For 305 thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsies performed from January 2000 to December 2020 in patients with end-stage renal disease, we recorded patient demographics, thyroid ultrasonography, and biopsy findings.

Objectives: Both living and deceased donor transplants require appropriate donor selection to increase the success of liver transplants. Proper deceased donor criteria will also increase the use of discarded and marginal donor livers. Here, we evaluated the Baskent University deceased and living donor criteria.

Objectives: Kidney transplant is the best treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease. Preparation of living related kidney donors and recipients is the major step to achieve their best long-term outcomes. Here, we present the Baskent University criteria for living kidney donors and recipients.

Objectives: In children with end-stage renal disease, chronic liver failure, or acute liver failure, liver transplant and kidney transplant are the most effective modalities for better clinical outcomes compared with other therapies. However, children are particularly susceptible to surgical complications, so pediatric solid-organ transplants should be reserved for centers with substantial experience and multidisciplinary expertise. Here, we assessed liver and kidney transplants performed at our center in 2021.

Objectives: In conditions such as large-for-size syndrome, postreperfusion hepatic edema, and intestinal edema, primary closure of the abdominal wall can cause respiratory complications and thrombosis of vascular structures. Here, we compared results of primary abdominal closure versus a temporary patch closure technique (the Bogota bag technique) in pediatric liver transplant recipients.
Materials And Methods: We performed primary abdominal closure in 295 recipients.

March 2022
From the Başkent University Department of Pediatric Nephrology, Ankara, Turkey.
Objectives: The new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) first appeared in Turkey in March 2020, spread rapidly, and caused many deaths. Although COVID-19 is mostly a respiratory disease, it can cause kidney and multiorgan failure in some cases. We believe that by sharing information about the course and effects of COVID-19 infection in kidney transplant recipients receiving long-term immunosuppressive therapy our understanding will improve.

Approximately 5% to 7% of unrelated stem cell donors are asked to donate stem cells a subsequent time to the same or a different patient. We investigated donors who accepted to be a donor for the second time between 2015 and 2021; donors were evaluated in terms of procedure-related complications, product quality, and donor follow-up in a JACIEaccredited (Joint Accreditation Committee of the International Society for Cellular Therapy and European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation).

Materials And Methods: We sent a web-based, 5-point Likert scale questionnaire (1: strongly disagree; 5: strongly agree) to capture the opinions and attitudes toward organ donation and transplantation after participants attended or did not a panel discussion on these topics.
Results: We sent 361 E-mails and received 69 responses, of which 46 students attended the panel discussion.

Objectives: The shortage of deceased donor organs is a limiting factor in transplant. The growing discrepancy between the wait list demand versus the supply of deceased donor organs has created an incentive for consideration of living donor liver transplant as an alternative. Here, we describe our evaluation process and donor complications.

During clinical management, several factors acting simultaneously result in acute rejection and chronic allograft nephropathy. Matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases are responsible for the organization of the extracellular matrix and play roles in cell proliferation and cellular invasion.

Invasive fungal infections, particularly those caused by Aspergillus species, have long been recognized as a major cause of death in severe aplastic anemia. However, there are few specific reports about infections and their therapy in patients with aplastic anemia.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of intraoperative hyperglycemia on postoperative outcomes in orthotopic liver transplant recipients.
Materials And Methods: After ethics committee approval was obtained, we retrospectively analyzed the records of patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplant from January 2000 to December 2013. A total 389 orthotopic liver transplants were performed in our center, but patients aged < 15 years (179 patients) were not included in the analyses.
