Parasitic diseases such as trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis pose significant health challenges in Africa. The Senegalese Pharmacopoeia, known for its many medicinal plants with anti-infectious properties, can be a source of antiparasitic natural products. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antiparasitic activities of 33 methanolic extracts from 24 ethnopharmacologically selected plants against Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Leishmania mexicana mexicana, as well as their cytotoxic activities on WI-38 cells.

Selective area molecular beam epitaxy of InSb on InP(111): from thin films to quantum nanostructures.

InSb is a material of choice for infrared as well as spintronic devices but its integration on large lattice mismatched semi-insulating III-V substrates has so far altered its exceptional properties. Here, we investigate the direct growth of InSb on InP(111)substrates with molecular beam epitaxy. Despite the lack of a thick metamorphic buffer layer for accommodation, we show that quasi-continuous thin films can be grown using a very high Sb/In flux ratio.

Objective: Multiple-Locus Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (VNTR) Analysis (MLVA) is widely used to subtype pathogens causing foodborne and waterborne disease outbreaks. The MLVAType shiny application was previously designed to extract MLVA profiles of Vibrio cholerae isolates from whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data, and provide backward compatibility with traditional MLVA typing methods. Large Language Models have demonstrated expert-level accuracy on medical board examinations, suggesting potential for clinical decision support systems. However, their metacognitive abilities, crucial for medical decision-making, remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we developed MetaMedQA, a benchmark incorporating confidence scores and metacognitive tasks into multiple-choice medical questions.

Background: Ancillary breast cancer (BC) radiation therapy (RT), particularly associated with chemotherapy, increases the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, it remains unclear whether this risk also applies to isolated contemporary radiotherapy without chemotherapy.

Methods: Seventy-five BC patients (35 left-sided and 40 right-sided) treated with RT and available dosimetry, prospectively underwent Agatston calcium score (CAC) and coronary CT angiography (CTCA) a median of 11 ± 1 years later and were compared to 75 age- and cardiovascular (CV) risk factor-matched female controls without a history of cancer.

Melatonin (MT) serves as a potent antioxidant in plant organisms, bolstering their resilience to temperature stress. In this study, the impact of MT on various buckwheat varieties under high-temperature stress conditions (40 °C) was investigated. Specifically, five buckwheat seedling varieties, comprising three sweet buckwheat variants (Fagopyrum esculentum) and two bitter buckwheat types (Fagopyrum tataricum), were subjected to foliar sprays of melatonin at concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 μM, with water at 25 °C employed as a control.
