Background: Ex vivo aspiration of parathyroid glands for the measurement of intraoperative parathyroid hormone (IOPTH) levels is a rapid point-of-care method to confirm parathyroid tissue during parathyroidectomy and an alternative to frozen section (FS). This study sought to determine the awareness and utilization of this technique among endocrine surgeons.

Materials And Methods: A de-identified 12-question survey regarding techniques for intraoperative identification/confirmation of parathyroid tissue and the use of IOPTH monitoring was distributed to all 608 members of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.

Purpose: Because user acceptance and resistance to the use of health information technology (HIT) affects system utilization and previous studies in this area have typically excluded pharmacists, this study specifically addresses the response of institutional pharmacists to HIT.

Methods: A survey investigating pharmacists' responses to electronic medical record (EMR) system use was developed using questions modified from previously validated research. The survey was distributed electronically to the mailing list for pharmacy preceptors for the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.

Opioid Deaths in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin 2013-2017: The Primacy of Heroin and Fentanyl.

Heroin and fentanyl are the overwhelming and increasing cause of opioid deaths in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. We reviewed all drug and opioid deaths from 2013 to 2017 to delineate the specific opioid drugs involved and changes in their incidence. From 2013 to 2017, 980 deaths were due to opioids, rising from 184 in 2013 to 337 in 2017.

Tapentadol toxicity in children.

Background: Tapentadol (Nucynta) is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain in adults. Tapentadol's mechanism of action consists of acting as an agonist on the μ-opioid receptor and by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine. There are no published reports on the toxicity of tapentadol in pediatric patients.
