Filamentous fungi produce a vast array of secondary metabolites (SMs) and some play a role in agriculture or pharmacology. Sequencing of the rice pathogen Fusarium fujikuroi revealed the presence of far more SM-encoding genes than known products. Purpose: Compared to older patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) younger patients are considered to be more active, thereby exposing the implant to significantly higher loads over a much longer period of time. Additionally, cases of secondary osteoarthritis caused by hip dysplasia, femoral head necrosis or rheumatic diseases are much more frequent than among the average patient population. Therefore, durable implant fixation and low wear rates are extremely important to achieve good long-term implant survival in this group of patients.

Using a combined approach of pulse chase labeling and single-particle tracking of Crb3A or 3B loaded vesicles we collected trajectories of different vesicle population in living podocyte cells and evaluated statistically their different mobility patterns. A rigid, nitroxide substituted terpyridine ligand has been used to synthesize hetero- and homoleptic bis-terpyridine complexes of copper(II). The homoleptic complex represents a three-spin system, while the metal ion in the heteroleptic complex is in average bound to one nitroxide bearing ligand. Fusaric acid (FSA) is a mycotoxin produced by several fusaria, including the rice pathogen Fusarium fujikuroi. Genes involved in FSA biosynthesis were previously identified as a cluster containing a polyketide synthase (PKS)-encoding (FUB1) and four additional genes (FUB2-FUB5). Purpose: A biomarker for dietary flavonoid intake from fruit and vegetables (FlavFV) is needed to elucidate the relevance of flavonoids from these sources for the prevention of chronic diseases. Urinary hippuric acid (HA)-a major metabolite of flavonoids-is promising in this respect as it was shown to satisfyingly indicate fruit and vegetable consumption in different age groups. Ectoine and hydroxyectoine are compatible solutes widely synthesized by members of the Bacteria to cope with high osmolarity surroundings. Inspection of 557 archaeal genomes revealed that only 12 strains affiliated with the Nitrosopumilus, Methanothrix or Methanobacterium genera harbour ectoine/hydroxyectoine gene clusters. Phylogenetic considerations suggest that these Archaea have acquired these genes through horizontal gene transfer events.

Enhanced levels of the inflammatory chemokine CCL2 are known to correlate with increased tumorigenesis and metastases, and thereby poor prognosis for cancer patients.
