Until recently, ground-state nuclear moments of the heaviest nuclei could only be inferred from nuclear spectroscopy, where model assumptions are required. Despite the wealth of physiological knowledge and plentiful genomes available, only few natural products of anaerobic bacteria have been identified until today and even less have been linked to their biosynthetic gene cluster. Here, we analyzed a unique NRPS-PKS hybrid gene cluster from an anaerobic Epsilonproteobacterium ( Sulfurospirillum barnesii). Phylogenetic analysis of key biosynthetic genes, gene expression studies, and comparative metabolomics resulted in the identification of the first anoxically biosynthesized NRPS-PKS hybrid metabolite: a lipo-dipeptide with a vinylogous side chain, called barnesin A.

Rubidium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (rubidium hexamethyldisilazanide, Rb(hmds)) is accessible on a large scale with excellent yields via a magnetite-catalyzed metalation of hexamethyldisilazane (H(hmds)) in liquid ammonia. Recrystallization of solvent-free alkali metal hexamethyldisilazanides [A(hmds)]n of sodium to cesium from solutions containing 2,2,5,5-tetramethyltetrahydrofuran (Me4THF, thf*) yields the dinuclear complexes [(thf*)A(hmds)]2, which show a rather asymmetric coordination behavior of the bulky ether ligand with strongly bent A-A-O moieties for the heavier K, Rb, and Cs congeners, whereas in the Na complex, the ether ligand is clamped between the trimethylsilyl groups. In hydrocarbon solutions, dissociation of these compounds is observed leading to the liberation of this bulky and weakly binding cyclic ether.

Drugs that are neither lipophilic nor suitable for encapsulation via remote loading procedures are generally characterized by low entrapment efficiencies and poor retention in liposomes. One approach to circumvent this problem consists in covalently linking a lipid to the drug molecule in order to permit its insertion into the vesicle membrane. The nature of the conjugated lipid and linker, as well as the composition of the liposomal bilayer were found to have a profound impact on the pharmacokinetic properties and biodistribution of the encapsulated drugs as well as on their biological activity.

Smoking is a major risk factor for the development of bladder cancer; however, the functional consequences of the carcinogens in tobacco smoke and bladder cancer-associated metabolic alterations remain poorly defined. Arachidonic acid (AA) is metabolized to diverse bioactive lipid mediators. Whereas the 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) facilitates AA conversion by 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) to pro-inflammatory leukotrienes (LTs), the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) degrades anti-inflammatory epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs). A pyridyl triazole (pyta) modified sucrose ligand was prepared in a seven step synthesis using d-glucose as the protection group for d-fructose and starting from commercially available sucrose. After complexation with Ru(bpy)Cl precursor, the sucrose-conjugated Ru complex of the general formula [Ru(bpy)(L)]Cl was formed.
