Article Synopsis
  • Acute acoustic trauma (AAT) is linked to intense noise exposure, particularly in military settings, where weapons can exceed 150 dB, leading to significant hearing loss and quality of life issues.
  • The study analyzed patient records from four military medical centers in Northeast France over five years, focusing on patients with cochlea-vestibular symptoms following noise exposure to assess long-term hearing impairment.
  • Results showed that among 419 patients, a substantial majority experienced tinnitus, with over 20% showing long-term hearing loss; higher doses of corticosteroids appeared to correlate with better hearing outcomes.

Percutaneous Axillary Artery Puncture: An Efficient Approach for Upper Extremity Access.

Ann Vasc Surg

July 2023

Hospices Civils de Lyon, Hôpital Louis Pradel, Service de chirurgie vasculaire et endovasculaire, Bron, France; Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (Univ Lyon), Villeurbanne, France.

The conundrum of the definition of haemorrhagic shock: a pragmatic exploration based on a scoping review, experts' survey and a cohort analysis.

Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg

December 2022

Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou, APHP, Université de Paris, 20 rue Leblanc 15, Paris, France.

Purpose: Traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS) is a complex, dynamic process and, no consensual definition of THS is available. This study aims (1) to explore existing definitions of traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS), (2) to identify essential components of these definitions and (3) to illustrate in a pragmatic way the consequences of applying five of these definitions to a trauma registry.

Methods: We conducted (1) a scoping review to identify the definitions used for traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS); (2) an international experts survey to rank by relevance a selection of components extracted from these definitions and (3) a registry-based analysis where several candidate definitions were tested in a large trauma registry to evaluate how the use of different definitions affected baseline characteristics, resources use and patient outcome.

November 2021

French Military medical school, 331, avenue du Général-de-Gaulle, Bron, France. Electronic address:

Data of good methodological quality have recently become available to support prehospital use of transfusion in the severe trauma setting. Consistent with recent guidelines for the implementation of damage control resuscitation in the hospital in this setting and in the wake of numerous cohort study data from wartime medicine, they are now guided by recent guidelines for the use of freeze-dried plasma. The main difficulties to overcome in order to implement a practice are of a regulatory and logistic nature.
