We evaluated a new method for susceptibility testing of a rapidly growing mycobacterium using real-time measurement of heat (microcalorimetry). MICs of 2 clinical Mycobacterium abscessus isolates were determined by microbroth dilution and E-test. For microcalorimetry, Middlebrook-7H10 agar+10% oleic acid-albumin-dextrose-catalase, containing amikacin, clarithromycin, linezolid, and ciprofloxacin was inoculated with ~10(5)CFU/mL.

The aim of the present study was to develop novel daptomycin-loaded acrylic microparticles with improved release profiles and antibacterial activity against two clinically relevant methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains (MSSA and MRSA, respectively). Daptomycin was encapsulated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PMMA-Eudragit RL 100 (EUD) microparticles by a double emulsion-solvent evaporation method. The role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in inflammatory bowel disease is controversial, as they have been implicated in disease aggravation. Different from other cyclooxygenase inhibitors, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) enhances the formation of anti-inflammatory and proresolution lipoxins derived from arachidonic acid as well as resolvins from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In European countries, low-molecular-weight heparin is generally initiated preoperatively for thromboprophylaxis in hip or knee replacement surgery. The objective of this review is to compare pre- and postoperative thromboprophylaxis strategies using available evidence, and discuss the challenges and issues that arise. A new small animal model of bone atrophic nonunion was established for investigating the process of bone regeneration by performing cauterization of the periosteum, removal of the local bone marrow, and stabilization with external fixation. The model allows the creation of an atrophic nonunion without the need for a critical size defect. Furthermore, it provides reproducible, well-defined mechanical conditions and minimized physical interference of the implant with the biological processes in the healing zone.

While softening in the initial stage is reported and sometimes used as an indicator of early OA, there is a lack of data relating the macroscopic appearance of cartilage to its mechanical and histological properties in all stages of degeneration.
