In recent years, essential oils (EOs) have received interest due to their antibacterial properties. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the EOs obtained from seven species of on three strains of (two serotyped wild strains and one ATCC strain), a bacterium able to contaminate food products and cause foodborne disease in humans. The species analysed in the present study were cultivated at the Botanic Garden and Museum of the University of Pisa, and their air-dried aerial parts were subjected to hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus.

Background And Purpose: A significant interobserver variability (IOV) for clinical target volume of the primary tumor (CTVp) delineation was shown in a previous national review project. Since then, international expert consensus guidelines (CG) for the delineation of CTVp were published. The aim of this follow-up study was to 1) objectify the extent of implementation of the CG, 2) assess its impact on delineation quality and consistency, 3) identify any remaining ambiguities.

Objectives: The differential diagnosis between pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and postcapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is sometimes difficult despite guidelines-derived standardized step-by-step diagnostic algorithms. We therefore explored the added value of lung ultrasound to a previously validated echocardiographic score of right heart catheterization measurements.
Methods: Patients referred for PH underwent a right heart catheterization, echocardiography, and lung ultrasound before and after rapid infusion of 7 mL/kg of saline.

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) is a new non-invasive dermatological imaging device. We summarized the available data on the use of LC-OCT for inflammatory and infectious diseases. In February 2023, we searched for all articles concerning the use of LC-OCT in inflammatory and infectious diseases.

Expressed by endothelial cells, is a cadherin involved in vascular morphogenesis and in the maintenance of vascular integrity and lymphatic function. The main purpose of our study was to identify distinct variants of the gene that could be associated with lymphatic malformations and predisposition for lymphedema. We performed Next Generation Sequencing of the gene in 235 Italian patients diagnosed with lymphedema but who tested negative for variants in known lymphedema genes.

Background: Fluid challenge (FC) is often adopted as gold standard used to assess the reliability of passive leg raising (PLR) in predicting fluid responsiveness in the intensive care unit (ICU). This study aimed to address the impact of the different definitions and timings used to assess FC response on PLR reliability.
Methods: Ancillary study from a data set of a multicentric study in 85 ICU patient with acute circulatory failure who received a FC (500 mL of crystalloids in 10 minutes) within the first 48h of ICU admission, preceded by PLR in 30 patients.

SVEP1, also known as Polydom, is a large extracellular mosaic protein with functions in protein interactions and adhesion. Since Svep1 knockout animals show severe edema and lymphatic system malformations, the aim of this study is to evaluate the presence of SVEP1 variants in patients with lymphedema. We analyzed DNA from 246 lymphedema patients for variants in known lymphedema genes, 235 of whom tested negative and underwent a second testing for new candidate genes, including SVEP1, as reported here.

Brain metastasis (BM) is a frequent complication of systemic cancer usually associated with poor prognosis. Survival depends on numerous factors, which complicates prognosis and treatment. It has been suggested that BM growing from previously dormant disseminated tumour cells (DTCs) may exhibit a milder phenotype than BM derived from continuously progressing metastatic cells; however, to the best of our knowledge, the prognosis of patients presenting with BM from dormant DTCs is unknown.

Recently, a loss of function variant (rs72613567) in 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 13 (HSD17B13) has been identified as protective of nonalcoholic (NAFLD) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD). However, the role of this single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is currently unknown. A total of 3,315 European patients with HCC (n = 1,109) or without HCC, but with chronic liver disease (CLD; n = 2,206), from four centers were analyzed either by whole-exome sequencing (WES; exploratory cohort, 285 HCC) or genotyped for HSD17B13 rs72613567 (validation cohort, 824 HCC and all CLD).

In 1895, iodine was characterized as an essential element of thyroid tissue by Baumann. The efficacy of iodine to prevent goiter was demonstrated by Marine in Northern USA in 1916-1920. Severe endemic goiter and cretinism had been almost entirely eliminated from continental Western Europe and Northern America before the 1930's; however large populations elsewhere and even some places in Western Europe (Sicily) were still affected up to the 2000's.

Background: Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers (BCs) constitute the most frequent BC subtype. The molecular landscape of ER+ relapsed disease is not well characterized. In this study, we aimed to describe the genomic evolution between primary (P) and matched metastatic (M) ER+ BCs after failure of adjuvant therapy.
