'Coasting', a method which consists of stopping exogenous gonadotrophins and postponing HCG administration until the patient's serum estradiol (E2) level decreases, is often used to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). We conducted a systematic review to analyse whether there is sufficient evidence to justify the general acceptance of coasting. The studies, which involved 493 patients in 12 studies, are very heterogeneous in the characteristics and number of patients in the ovulation stimulation schemes.

Background And Aims: Galectins are beta-galactoside binding proteins. This ability may have a bearing on cell adhesion and migration/proliferation in human colon cancer cells. In addition to galectins-1 and -3 studied to date, other members of this family not investigated in detail may contribute to modulation of tumour cell features.

Textiloma is defined as a tumor composed of cotton matrix surrounded by granulomatous reaction. It occurs following operations in which surgical sponges were inadvertently left behind. We describe a case of a 59-year-old man presenting with a pathologic fracture of the proximal left femur.

The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a dramatic iatrogenic complication of fertility treatment. There is no consensus about its prevention strategies. We assessed whether physicians modify their preventive attitude in relation to clinical risk factors and to the oestradiol response chart.

Objective: To study how gynaecologist manage postmenopausal bleeding in women not using HRT. The impact on the physicians' attitude of risk factors for endometrial cancer and of the endometrial thickness was essentially accounted for.
Methods: Two different case-types were defined by modifying the risk level of developing endometrial cancer.

We investigated the basal phylogeny of eukaryotes through analyses of sequences from the ADP-ATP mitochondrial carrier, a transmembrane protein that is stable in function across eukaryote kingdoms. The ADP-ATP data strongly suggest the grouping of Plantae and Fungi to the exclusion of Metazoa. We implemented several procedures to avoid pervasive analytical artifacts such as erroneous alignment, random rooting, long branch attraction, and misidentification of noisy characters.

A one-day survey was carried out in 14 acute care hospitals in Lebanon in May 1997, to determine the prevalence of nosocomial infection (NI) by site of infection, hospital department, micro-organism and pathology. Hospitals (N=14) with more than 50 beds were selected at random from the official Lebanese Health Ministry Registration Directory. All patients who presented that day on the ward and were not admitted or discharged, were included.

Background: While it is obvious that patients should be involved in the decision making process, questions arise as to whether it is feasible to inform them objectively.
Objective: To assess the impact of the physician's opinion, on the choice of treatment, to the patient.

Sixty-five million years ago, massive volcanism produced on the India-Seychelles landmass the largest continental lava deposit (Deccan Traps) of the past 200 million years. Using a molecular clock-independent approach for inferring dating information from molecular phylogenies, we show that multiple lineages of frogs survived Deccan Traps volcanism after millions of years of isolation on drifting India. The collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates was followed by wide dispersal of several of these lineages.

Combination of molecular phylogenetic analyses of Chrysomelina beetles and chemical data of their defensive secretions indicate that two lineages independently developed, from an ancestral autogenous metabolism, an energetically efficient strategy that made the insect tightly dependent on the chemistry of the host plant. However, a lineage (the interrupta group) escaped this subordination through the development of a yet more derived mixed metabolism potentially compatible with a large number of new host-plant associations. Hence, these analyses on leaf beetles document a mechanism that can explain why high levels of specialization do not necessarily lead to "evolutionary dead ends.

A mail survey was sent to 1154 women working in a university hospital, to assess the perception of health and the uptake of prevention strategies in an optimal setting. A list of 13 diseases was submitted and the women were asked to list the five diseases they found to be the most important for a woman of their age. Breast cancer was ranked among the five most important diseases by 85% of the women and uterus cancer by 71.

Recent studies have reported that independent adaptive radiations can lead to identical ecomorphs. Our phylogenetic analyses of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences here indicate that a major radiation of ranid frogs on Madagascar produced morphological, physiological, and developmental characters that are remarkably similar to those that independently evolved on the Indian subcontinent. We demonstrate further that, in several cases, adult and larval stages each evolved sets of characters which are not only convergent between independent lineages, but also allowed both developmental stages to invade the same adaptive zone.

Most women in developed countries will live a third of their lives after the menopause. Vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, sleep disturbances, mood swings), and urogenital complications (atrophic vaginal irritation and dryness, dyspareunia) occur frequently during this period of life, but their severity and duration may vary widely between individuals. The menopause also induces accelerated bone loss and is the principal risk factor for osteoporosis.

Previous studies from this and other laboratories indicated that the oestrogen-regulated heat shock protein HSP27 is involved in the control of MCF-7 cells growth and differentiation, as it also appears to be in other cell types, including osteoblasts and HL-60 cells. In the latter instance, induction of differentiation is associated with the downregulation of myeloblastin, a serine protease now identified as proteinase 3 (hence its designation as PR3/Mbn), mirrored by an increase in the cellular content of the small heat shock protein HSP27, a substrate to this enzyme. Besides, antisense inhibition of PR3/Mbn production sufficed for inducing HL-60 cells monocytic differentiation.

During Trypanosoma brucei infections, the response against the variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) of the parasite represents a major interaction between the mammalian host immune system and the parasite surface. Since immune recognition of other parasite derived factors also occurs, we examined the humoral host response against trypanosome heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), a conserved antigen with an autoimmune character. During experimental T.

Background: 21-Aminosteroids are potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant drugs that provide remarkable endothelial protection in different models of tissue ischemia-reperfusion and inflammation. The effects of 21-aminosteroids in sepsis, a highly inflammatory condition leading to panendothelial activation and injury, are largely uninvestigated. We therefore explored the effects of the 21-aminosteroid U74386G on hepatic blood flow, endothelial cell function, and sinusoidal structure in a canine model of fluid-resuscitated, hyperdynamic endotoxic shock.

Motor strategies, defined by kinetic, kinematic and/or muscle activation patterns, reflect neural planning of movement, which takes into account central as well as peripheral constraints. Major alteration is expected in cerebral palsy, a condition characterized by abnormal posture and movement secondary to early lesion of the brain. The objective of this study was to characterize the motor strategies involved in disruption of posture in cerebral palsy of the spastic diplegia type and compare them with normal controls.

Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type III (TRP III) shares common traits with TRP I and II, including sparse hair, a "pear-shaped" nose, osteodysplasia with cone-shaped epiphyses, and autosomal dominant inheritance, but is distinguished by the presence of severe brachydactyly. TRP III was first described in 1984 in Japanese patients, one sporadic case [Sugio and Kajii, 1984: Am. J.

HL-60 and MCF-7 cells were treated with 0.15 microM camptothecin (CPT) or with the solvent dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for the controls, for 2, 3 and 4 h or for 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. The apoptotic index (AI) was then evaluated in parallel by the following flow cytometric methods: (1) double staining of unfixed cells with fluoresceinated annexin V and propidium iodide (PI), this after detachment by trypsinization in the case of MCF-7 cultures; (2) prefixation in 70% ethanol, extraction of degraded, low molecular weight DNA with 0.
