An Algorithm in Managing Deep Inferior Epigastric Vessel Interruption in Free Flap Breast Reconstruction.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

April 2023

Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, University Hospital Brussels, Free University of Brussel (VUB), Belgium.

Unlabelled: Previous surgical procedures in the abdomen are no longer contra-indications for free flap breast reconstruction using the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap. Nonetheless, a possible consequence of previous surgical procedures may be trauma to the deep inferior epigastric (DIE) pedicle, leading to interruption. In these cases, a modification in operative strategy may be required.

February 2013

professor, Free University of Brussel (VUB), Dental Medicine, Brussels, Belgium, and assistant professor, University of Ghent, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dental School, Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology, Ghent, Belgium.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to document the long-term outcome of Brånemark implants installed in augmented maxillary bone and to identify parameters that are associated with peri-implant bone level.

Material And Methods: Patients of a periodontal practice who had been referred to a maxillofacial surgeon for iliac crest bone grafting in the atrophic maxilla were retrospectively recruited. Five months following grafting, they received 7-8 turned Brånemark implants.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute noise-induced hearing loss: evaluation of different treatment regimens.

Diving Hyperb Med

June 2010

Anesthesiologist and physician in diving and hyperbaric medicine at the Centre for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy of the Military Hospital in Brussels and an associate researcher at the Environmental and Occupational Physiology Laboratory of the Free University of Brussel, Centre for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Military Hospital "Queen Astrid" Rue Bruyn 1, 1120 Brussels, Belgium.

Introduction: Impulse noise from firearms is a common cause of acute acoustic trauma (AAT), which is characterized by high-frequency hearing loss and tinnitus. Various treatment modalities have been proposed, some combining medical treatment with hyperbaric oxygen (HBOT) in various ways. We have reviewed the therapeutic effect of primary protocols, with or without HBOT, used in our hospital.

Background: Resistance training has been introduced into rehabilitation to improve the efficiency of the 1980s traditional training. Among the modalities, the choice of recovery period length or repetition speed is hardly explained in term of functional benefit but not in terms of cardiovascular (CV) response. To our knowledge, no investigation has been made on the acute CV effect of repetition speed and rest periods between sets of such training during rehabilitation.

A novel quantum similarity measure (QSM) is constructed based on concepts from information theory. In an application of QSM to atoms, the new QSM and its corresponding quantum similarity index (QSI) are evaluated throughout the periodic table, using the atomic electron densities and shape functions calculated in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The periodicity of Mendeleev's table is regained for the first time through the evaluation of a QSM.

Background: Resistance training has been introduced in cardiac rehabilitation to give more benefit than traditional training. Haemodynamic evaluation of cardiac patients to resistance training has generally consisted of continuous HR monitoring and discontinuous blood pressure measurements.

Design And Methods: Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) responses to resistance training were evaluated using continuous monitoring (Finapres) during low (four sets of 17 repetitions at 40% of the one-repetition maximum strength [1-RM]) and high intensity resistance training (four sets of 10 repetitions at 70% of 1-RM) on a leg extension machine in 14 patients who participated in a rehabilitation programme.

Ig gene sequences in the study of clonality.

Pathol Biol (Paris)

February 1999

Dept. Hematology-Immunology, Free University of Brussel, Belgium.

Investigations of normal and neoplastic B cells are being channelled into new directions by recent work on immunoglobulin variable region genes. Assembling of heavy and light chain genes introduces enormous heterogeneity into the third complementarity determining regions (CDR3s) of immunoglobulins. For reasons that will become apparent below, variation in CDR3s is especially broad in heavy chains.

Use of a simulator with CT option in radiotherapy of macular degeneration.

Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys

June 1998

Department of Radiation Oncology, Academic Hospital, Free University of Brussel, Belgium.

Purpose: To assess the accuracy of a conventional simulation procedure in radiotherapy of age-related macular degeneration.

Methods And Materials: A computed tomographic (CT) extension attached to the treatment simulator was used to acquire CT images immediately after conventional simulation in 18 patients referred for treatment of age-related macular degeneration. Analysis was performed on 16 one-sided treatment cases for whom images were obtained.

Carbachol, through a muscarinic receptor, thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha), bradykinin, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) increased the apparent [Ca2+]i (intracellular free Ca2(+)-concentration) of dog thyrocytes in primary culture. The [Ca2+]i measured by the Quin-2 technique rose immediately after the addition of the agonists and reached a maximal value after less than 30 seconds. Afterwards, the [Ca2+]i declined to a plateau higher than the basal level when the cells were triggered with carbachol.
