We described in 2017 how weathering plastic litter in the marine environment fulfils two of three criteria to impose a planetary boundary threat related to "chemical pollution and the release of novel entities": (1) planetary-scale exposure, which (2) is not readily reversible. Whether marine plastics meet the third criterion, (3) eliciting a disruptive impact on vital earth system processes, was uncertain. Since then, several important discoveries have been made to motivate a re-evaluation.

Developing resource-abundant and sustainable metal-free bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is essential for the practical application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). 2D black phosphorus (BP) with fully exposed atoms and active lone pair electrons can be promising for oxygen electrocatalysts, which, however, suffers from low catalytic activity and poor electrochemical stability. Herein, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst is demonstrated via covalently bonding BP nanosheets with graphitic carbon nitride (denoted BP-CN-c).

A zirconia-based potentiometric solid electrolyte gas sensor with internal solid state reference was used to study the response behavior of platinum cermet and indium tin oxide sensing electrodes. Target gases included both oxygen and carbon monoxide in nitrogen-based sample gas mixtures. It was found that with the indium tin oxide sensing electrode, the low-temperature behavior is mainly a result of incomplete equilibration due to contaminations of the electrode surface.

Photon bunching in incoherent cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy originates from the fact that a single high-energy electron can generate multiple photons when interacting with a material, thus, revealing key properties of electron-matter excitation. Contrary to previous works based on Monte Carlo modeling, here we present a fully analytical model describing the amplitude and shape of the second order autocorrelation function ( (τ)) for continuous and pulsed electron beams. Moreover, we extend the analysis of photon bunching to ultrashort electron pulses, in which up to 500 electrons per pulse excite the sample within a few picoseconds.

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Liaoning Key Laboratory for Catalytic Conversion Carbon Resources, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, 116024, People's Republic of China.

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are at present widely used as energy storage and conversion device in our daily life. However, due to the limited power density, the application of LIBs is still restricted in some areas such as commercial vehicles or heavy-duty trucks. An effective strategy to solve this problem is to increase energy density through the development of battery materials.

Article Synopsis
  • Idiopathic Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) can lead to kidney failure after transplantation, and ongoing research aims to identify unknown circulating factors responsible for this condition.
  • A recent case study demonstrated successful treatment of recurrent FSGS in a patient through removing these circulating factors using a technique called CytoSorb apheresis, despite traditional factors being within normal ranges.
  • Advanced methodologies like podocyte cell cultures and Raman spectroscopy revealed significant changes in the patient's serum and kidney biopsy, indicating alterations in lipid metabolism associated with recurrent FSGS.

Grazing incidence ultrasonic microscopy (GIUM) is an experimental method for visualising the microstructures of polycrystals with local preferential orientations. It has previously been demonstrated on an austenitic stainless steel weld, exposing grains much smaller than the propagating wavelength, but the physical mechanism of the method has only been proposed as a hypothesis. In this paper, we use grain-scale finite element simulations based on the EBSD measurements to verify the principles behind GIUM images further and to assess how deep does the method penetrate the component under examination.

By combining results of adsorption/desorption measurements on powders and electrical conductivity studies on thick and thin films, the interaction of indium tin oxide with various ambient gas species and carbon monoxide as potential target gas was studied between room temperature and 700 °C. The results show that the indium tin oxide surfaces exhibit a significant coverage of water-related and carbonaceous adsorbates even at temperatures as high as 600 °C. Specifically carbonaceous species, which are also produced under carbon monoxide exposure, show a detrimental effect on oxygen adsorption and may impair the film's sensitivity to a variety of target gases if the material is used in gas sensing applications.

The operation efficiency and safety of pressure vessels in the oil and gas industry profits from an accurate knowledge about the inner filling distribution. However, an accurate and reliable estimation of the multi-phase height levels in such objects is a challenging task, especially when considering the high demands in practicability, robustness in harsh environments and safety regulations. Most common systems rely on impractical instrumentation, lack the ability to measure solid phases or require additional safety precautions due to their working principle.

Stenting is a widely used treatment procedure for coronary artery disease around the world. Stents have a complex geometry, which makes the characterization of their corrosion difficult due to the absence of a mathematical model to calculate the entire stent surface area (ESSA). Therefore, corrosion experiments with stents are mostly based on qualitative analysis.

Despite the recent progress in the synthesis of crystalline boronate ester covalent organic frameworks (BECOFs) in powder and thin-film through solvothermal method and on-solid-surface synthesis, respectively, their applications in electronics, remain less explored due to the challenges in thin-film processability and device integration associated with the control of film thickness, layer orientation, stability and crystallinity. Moreover, although the crystalline domain sizes of the powder samples can reach micrometer scale (up to ≈1.5 μm), the reported thin-film samples have so far rather small crystalline domains up to 100 nm.
