Respiratory infections caused by coronaviruses (CoVs) have become a major public health concern in the past two decades as revealed by the emergence of SARS-CoV in 2002, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019. The most severe clinical phenotypes commonly arise from exacerbation of immune response following the infection of alveolar epithelial cells localized at the pulmonary blood-air barrier. Preclinical rodent models do not adequately represent the essential genetic properties of the barrier, thus necessitating the use of humanized transgenic models.

Heterogeneous reactions associated with porous solid films are ubiquitous and play an important role in both nature and industrial processes. However, due to the no-slip boundary condition in pressure-driven flows, the interfacial mass transfer between the porous solid surface and the environment is largely limited to slow molecular diffusion, which severely hinders the enhancement of heterogeneous reaction kinetics. We propose the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) as a tool for the quality control of 3-D-printed ceramics. Test samples with premeditated defects, namely single- and two-component samples of zirconia, titania, and titanium suboxides, were printed by stereolithography-based DLP (Digital Light Processing) processes. The OCT tomograms obtained on the green samples showed the capability of the method to visualize variations in the layered structure of the samples as well as the presence of cracks and inclusions at depths up to 130 µm, as validated by SEM images.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to prepare resorbable polylactide fibers for periodontitis treatment using coaxial electrospinning to optimize the release of metronidazole (MNA) by reducing the initial burst effect.
Methods: Poly(L-lactide-co-D,L-lactide) (PLA) fibers mats with different distributions of metronidazole (MNA) were manufactured by coaxial electrospinning (COAX). By COAX spinning the central core of the fiber was enriched with 40% MNA (m/m), while the sheath of the fiber consisted of PLA only (test group).

Surface cleaning of the working electrode has a key role in improved electrochemical and physicochemical properties of the biosensors. Herein, chemical oxidation in piranha, chemical cleaning in potassium hydroxide-hydrogen peroxide, combined (electro-) chemical alkaline treatment, and potential cycling in sulfuric acid were applied to gold finish electrode surfaces deposited onto three different substrates; low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), and polyimide (PI), using three different deposition technologies; screen printing, inkjet printing, and electroplating (printed circuit board technology, PCB) accordingly. The effects of the (electro-) chemical treatments on the gold content and electrochemical responses of LTCC, PEN, and PCB applicable for aptamer-based sensors are discussed.

Based on the fact that cogwheels are indispensable parts in manufacturing, we present the acoustic resonance testing (ART) of small data on sintered cogwheels for quality control in the context of non-destructive testing (NDT). Considering the lack of extensive studies on cogwheel data by means of ART in combination with machine learning (ML), we utilize time-frequency domain feature analysis and apply ML algorithms to the obtained feature sets in order to detect damaged samples in two ways: one-class and binary classification. In each case, despite small data, our approach delivers robust performance: All damaged test samples reflecting real-world scenarios are recognized in two one-class classifiers (also called detectors), and one intact test sample is misclassified in binary ones.
