Overcrowding, poor conditions, and high population turnover make prisons highly susceptible to COVID-19. Vaccination is key to controlling COVID-19, yet there is disagreement regarding whether people who live and work in prisons should be prioritised in national vaccination programmes. To help resolve this, we critically examine the extent, nature, and quality of extant literature regarding prioritisation of COVID-19 vaccinations for people who live and work in prisons.

While the fungal metabolite illudin M () is indiscriminately cytotoxic in cancer and non-malignant cells, its retinoate showed a greater selectivity for the former, especially in a cerebral context. Illudin M killed malignant glioma cells as well as primary neurons and astrocytes at similarly low concentrations and destroyed their microtubule and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) networks. In contrast, the ester was distinctly more cytotoxic in highly dedifferentiated U87 glioma cells than in neurons, which were even stimulated to enhanced growth.

Exploring the use of self-sovereign identity for event ticketing systems.

Electron Mark

July 2022

Branch Business & Information Systems Engineering, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT, Wittelsbacherring 10, 95447 Bayreuth, Germany.

Ticket fraud and ticket scalping activities often cause high costs as well as trust concerns for fans buying event tickets, especially in the secondary ticketing market. To address these issues, several publications and projects have proposed using blockchain technology to enable digital trust and ticket verifiability and thus to improve event ticketing systems. However, these approaches exhibit considerable privacy challenges and fall short concerning reliable, efficient visitor identification, which is necessary for controlling secondary market transactions.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all cutaneous malignancies. It is found predominantly in white populations and risk factors include advanced age, ultraviolet exposure, male sex, immunosuppression, such as AIDS/HIV infection, haematological malignancies or solid organ transplantation, and Merkel cell polyomavirus infection. MCC is an aggressive tumour with 26% of cases presenting lymph node involvement at diagnosis and 8% with distant metastases.

Purpose: High pathologic complete response (pCR) rates and comparably good survival data were seen in a phase II trial combining perioperative fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin, and docetaxel (FLOT) chemotherapy with trastuzumab for resectable, esophagogastric adenocarcinoma (EGA). The current trial evaluates the addition of trastuzumab and pertuzumab to FLOT as perioperative treatment for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive resectable EGA.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized phase II/III trial, patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive, resectable EGA (≥ clinical tumor 2 or clinical nodal-positive) were assigned to four pre- and postoperative cycles of either FLOT alone (arm A) or combined with trastuzumab and pertuzumab, followed by nine cycles of trastuzumab/pertuzumab (arm B).

Background: Over the past decade, antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens that include integrase strand inhibitors (INSTIs) have become the most commonly used for people with HIV starting ART. Although trials and observational studies have compared virological failure on INSTI-based with other regimens, few data are available on mortality in people with HIV treated with INSTIs in routine care. Therefore, we compared all-cause mortality between different INSTI-based and non-INSTI-based regimens in adults with HIV starting ART from 2013 to 2018.

Background: Trauma may be associated with significant to life-threatening blood loss, which in turn may increase the risk of complications and death, particularly in the absence of adequate treatment. Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solutions are used for volume therapy to treat hypovolemia due to acute blood loss to maintain or re-establish hemodynamic stability with the ultimate goal to avoid organ hypoperfusion and cardiovascular collapse. The current study compares a 6% HES 130 solution (Volulyte 6%) versus an electrolyte solution (Ionolyte) for volume replacement therapy in adult patients with traumatic injuries, as requested by the European Medicines Agency to gain more insights into the safety and efficacy of HES in the setting of trauma care.

Article Synopsis
  • A collaboration of experts from the EDF, EADO, and EORTC has developed guidelines for diagnosing and treating cutaneous melanoma based on extensive literature reviews and clinical experience.
  • Melanomas are typically excised with safety margins of 1 to 2 cm, and sentinel lymph node dissection is recommended for certain patients, although its survival benefit is still uncertain.
  • Treatment for advanced stage III/IV melanoma involves a multidisciplinary approach, with immunotherapy or targeted therapies based on specific genetic mutations being the primary options, reflecting the rapidly evolving nature of melanoma treatment.

This position paper discusses the challenges of blockchain applications in businesses and the public sector related to an excessive degree of transparency. We first point out the types of sensitive data involved in different patterns of blockchain use cases. We then argue that the implications of blockchains' information exposure caused by replicated transaction storage and execution go well beyond the often-mentioned conflicts with the GDPR's "right to be forgotten" and may be more problematic than anticipated.

  • Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is one of the most serious skin cancers, responsible for 90% of skin cancer deaths, prompting collaboration among leading European dermatology organizations to create diagnostic and treatment guidelines.
  • Melanoma diagnosis should be confirmed clinically with dermatoscopy, and histopathological examination is essential if melanoma is suspected; advanced imaging is only recommended for later-stage melanomas.
  • A proposed structured follow-up scheme is designed to monitor for relapses, though more research is needed to determine the ideal frequency of examinations; these guidelines are effective until the end of 2024.

  • Researchers identified a new population of human CD34 hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) called EPCR HSCs, which exhibit exceptional self-renewal and repopulating abilities, with a frequency of about 1 in 3 cells being stem cells.
  • The EPCR HSCs display a unique gene expression profile that allows them to produce multiple blood cell lineages both in living organisms and lab settings.
  • This discovery provides a clearer picture of the hierarchy and organization of human hematopoietic stem cells, making it easier to study stem cell behavior in post-natal tissues.

Aging with drug use: Theorizing intersectionally with material gerontology and critical drug studies.

J Aging Stud

March 2022

Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Institute for Addiction Research, Germany; Goethe University, Department of Educational Sciences, Germany. Electronic address:

Rethinking old age and what aging means within the context and materiality of drug use, this paper asks, 'how does drug use matter in old age?' and follows a series of conceptual arguments to link aging studies and critical drug studies with material gerontology in an intersectional analysis. To do this, four research areas are reviewed to conceptualize habitual drug use in old age. First, aging is explored through its biological, subjective, and socio-material representations.
