Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if diabetes is a risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes, independent of age and other health conditions, as diabetes is often seen in older individuals.
  • Conducted as part of the CORONADO initiative, the research matched 2210 COVID-19 patients with and without diabetes by age, sex, and admission date, assessing outcomes like death and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation.
  • Results showed that diabetes patients had higher rates of adverse outcomes within both 7 and 28 days of hospital admission, indicating that diabetes is a significant risk factor for severe COVID-19 complications regardless of age and comorbidity.

Sex disparities in COVID-19 outcomes of inpatients with diabetes: insights from the CORONADO study.

Eur J Endocrinol

July 2021

Department of Diabetology, Metabolic Diseases and Nutrition, Toulouse University Hospital, Institute of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases, UMR1297 INSERM/UPS, Toulouse University, Toulouse, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined sex differences in severe outcomes of COVID-19 among adults with diabetes, analyzing data from 2,380 hospitalized patients.
  • Findings revealed that females had a lower risk of invasive mechanical ventilation, death, and ICU admission compared to males, although this female advantage was less evident in overall in-hospital mortality.
  • The research highlighted specific predictors of death linked to sex, emphasizing the need for tailored COVID-19 management strategies based on biological differences.

Service d'hépatologie et réanimation hépatique, DMU DIGEST, AP-HP Nord, Hôpital Beaujon, Clichy, France.

Immune-related hepatitis (IRH) is a frequent but poorly understood immune-related adverse event and its frequency increases since the use of combination therapy in several cancer types. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop adapted guidelines to manage IRH.In the present letter, based on Ziogas report entitled 'When steroids are not enough in immune-related hepatitis: current clinical challenges discussed on the basis of a case report', several points are discussed: assessment of IRH severity and liver biopsy indication, immune-related cholangitis as a differential diagnosis for some IRH presentation, the need of steroids for IRH management or the indication for second line immunosuppressive treatment and finally, the possibility of immunotherapy resumption.

Relationship between obesity and severe COVID-19 outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes: Results from the CORONADO study.

Diabetes Obes Metab

February 2021

Département d'Endocrinologie, Diabétologie et Nutrition, CHU Toulouse, Institut des Maladies Métaboliques et Cardiovasculaires, UMR1048 INSERM/UPS, Université de Toulouse, Toulouse, France.

Article Synopsis
  • * Analysis was conducted on 1,965 patients from the CORONADO study, categorizing them into normal weight, overweight, and various obesity classes, revealing significant risks associated with higher BMI for intubation and death by day 7.
  • * The findings suggest that while overweight and obesity worsen early COVID-19 prognosis in T2D patients, this negative effect is not observed in patients aged 75 and older, indicating a need for tailored management strategies for older adults.

Background: Immune-related hepatitis (IRH) occurs in 1 to 18% of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-treated patients. Steroids are usually recommended for grade≥3 IRH, but their impact on IRH resolution and patient survival remains unclear.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a prospective cohort of 339 patients treated at Saint-Louis Hospital (Paris, France) with ICIs for advanced melanoma.

We report on the development of a new model of alveolar air-tissue interface on a chip. The model consists of an array of suspended hexagonal monolayers of gelatin nanofibers supported by microframes and a microfluidic device for the patch integration. The suspended monolayers are deformed to a central displacement of 40-80 µm at the air-liquid interface by application of air pressure in the range of 200-1,000 Pa.

Service de dermatologie, université Paris-Diderot-Paris VII, Sorbonne-Paris-Cité, hôpital Saint-Louis, 1, avenue Claude-Vellefaux, 75010 Paris, France. Electronic address:

Introduction: Cutaneous plasmacytosis is a rare skin condition first described in 1976 and it is seen mainly in patients of Asian descent. Patients usually present with multiple reddish-brown macules and nodules chiefly on the trunk and face, with clusters of well-differentiated plasma cells in the dermis. The aetiopathogenesis and nosological features of this entity remain obscure.

All Insulin Pumps Are Not Equivalent: A Bench Test Assessment for Several Basal Rates.

Diabetes Technol Ther

June 2020

IMMEDIAB Lab UMRS1138, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), Paris, France.

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is a widely adopted treatment for type 1 diabetes and is a component of an artificial pancreas. CSII accuracy is essential for glycemic control, however, this metric has not been given sufficient study, especially at the range of the lowest basal rates (BRs), which are commonly used in a pediatric population and in closed-loop systems (CLSs). Our study presents accuracy results of four off-the-shelf CSII systems using a new accurate method for CSII system evaluation.

Objective: High glucocorticoid levels in rodents inhibit development of beta cells during fetal life and lead to insulin deficiency in adulthood. To test whether similar phenomena occur in humans, we compared beta-cell function in adults who were exposed to glucocorticoids during the first part of fetal life with that of nonexposed subjects.

Research Design And Methods: The study was conducted in 16 adult participants exposed to glucocorticoids during the first part of fetal life and in 16 nonexposed healthy participants with normal glucose tolerance who were matched for age, sex, and body mass index (BMI).

  • Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) affects approximately 1-3.7% of women under forty and has unknown causes, but recent research identifies genetic factors, which are crucial for patient and family counseling.
  • Whole exome sequencing in two sisters with non-syndromic POI revealed two novel mutations in the STAG3 gene, linked to critical functions in meiosis and sister chromatid cohesion.
  • This is the first identified case of STAG3 mutations in a Caucasian family, highlighting the need for global genetic studies on POI to improve counseling and monitoring, as affected individuals may be at risk for ovarian tumors.

Kalman Filter-Based Novel Methodology to Assess Insulin Pump Accuracy.

Diabetes Technol Ther

October 2019

Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), UMRS 1138, Paris, France.

Insulin pump or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) system is a widely adopted contemporary treatment for type 1 diabetes and is a major component of an artificial pancreas (AP). CSII accuracy is essential for glycemic control and to-date such metric has not been given sufficient study, especially at the range of the lowest basal rate. The gold-standard assessment method IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) 60601-2-24 has some limitations.

Post-translational acylation controls the folding and functions of the CyaA RTX toxin.

FASEB J

September 2019

Institut Pasteur, Chemistry and Structural Biology Department, UMR CNRS 3528, Paris, France.

The adenylate cyclase (CyaA) toxin is a major virulence factor of , the causative agent of whooping cough. CyaA is synthetized as a pro-toxin, pro-CyaA, and converted into its cytotoxic form upon acylation of two lysines. After secretion, CyaA invades eukaryotic cells and produces cAMP, leading to host defense subversion.

Background: Synthetic vascular material use, particularly polytetrafluoroethylene- (PTFE) -based, can be associated with bleeding, which may increase operative time and blood loss.
