Global warming threatens the productivity of forest plantations. We propose here the integration of environmental information into a genomic evaluation scheme using individual reaction norms, to enable the quantification of resilience in forest tree improvement and conservation strategies in the coming decades. Random regression models were used to fit wood ring series, reflecting the longitudinal phenotypic plasticity of tree growth, according to various environmental gradients.

Genome transplantation (GT) allows the installation of purified chromosomes into recipient cells, causing the resulting organisms to adopt the genotype and the phenotype conferred by the donor cells. This key process remains a bottleneck in synthetic biology, especially for genome engineering strategies of intractable and economically important microbial species. So far, this process has only been reported using two closely related bacteria, Mycoplasma mycoides subsp.

Department of Forest Ecology and Genetics, INIA-CIFOR, 28040 Madrid, Spain Unidad Mixta de Genómica y Ecofisiología Forestal, INIA/UPM, 28040 Madrid, Spain

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on identifying genetic associations in the maritime pine species Pinus pinaster using a targeted genetic approach with a 384-SNP array enriched for growth and wood traits.
  • Researchers found strong links between certain SNPs in the korrigan gene and specific growth traits like height and polycyclism, with predictive models accounting for a notable percentage of phenotypic variance.
  • The results suggest that integrating candidate-gene studies can enhance marker selection and support genomic selection efforts in breeding programs for maritime pine.

Specific membrane lipid composition is important for plasmodesmata function in Arabidopsis.

Plant Cell

April 2015

Laboratory of Membrane Biogenesis, UMR5200 CNRS, 33883 Villenave d'Ornon Cedex, France University of Bordeaux, 33000 Bordeaux, France

Plasmodesmata (PD) are nano-sized membrane-lined channels controlling intercellular communication in plants. Although progress has been made in identifying PD proteins, the role played by major membrane constituents, such as the lipids, in defining specialized membrane domains in PD remains unknown. Through a rigorous isolation of "native" PD membrane fractions and comparative mass spectrometry-based analysis, we demonstrate that lipids are laterally segregated along the plasma membrane (PM) at the PD cell-to-cell junction in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Article Synopsis
  • Misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum trigger the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR(ER)) to help restore balance, with p97/CDC-48 playing a crucial role in both protein degradation and UPR(ER) gene transcription.
  • A study using RNAi screening and proteomics in Caenorhabditis elegans identified RUVB-2 as a new repressor of certain UPR(ER) genes, whose degradation by CDC-48 boosts the expression of ER stress response genes via an XBP1-dependent pathway.
  • This research highlights how p97/CDC-48 not only aids in degrading misfolded proteins but also regulates the transcription of UPR(ER) genes

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding how species adapt to climate change is vital for preserving biodiversity, especially with long-lived trees like maritime pine that show a significant adaptation lag compared to shorter-lived species.
  • Research identified 18 candidate-gene SNPs in maritime pine that correlate with climate adaptation, emphasizing temperature as a key factor and showing varying selective pressures in different regions.
  • These SNPs have predictive power for survival under extreme climate conditions and can be crucial for improving models that forecast species range shifts and inform conservation strategies amid climate change challenges.
