Article Synopsis
  • Most eukaryotic proteins have an N-terminal acetylation that plays a significant role in their degradation and function, and researchers have used CRISPR knockout screens to investigate this relationship.
  • The study identifies a strong interaction between the N-terminal acetyltransferase (NatC) and specific ubiquitin ligases, showing that NatC prevents degradation of proteins that lack acetylation at their starting methionine.
  • Loss of NatC in fruit flies leads to serious issues like male sterility and reduced mobility, but overexpressing a targeted protein can counteract these effects, highlighting the importance of N-terminal acetylation for protein stability and organism health.

Single-shot X-ray absorption spectroscopy at X-ray free electron lasers.

Sci Rep

October 2023

LCLS, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Menlo Park, CA, 94025, USA.

X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is a widely used X-ray diagnostic method for studying electronic and structural properties of matter. At first glance, the relatively narrow bandwidth and the highly fluctuating spectral structure of X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL) sources seem to require accumulation over many shots to achieve high data quality. To date the best approach to implementing XAS at XFEL facilities has been using monochromators to scan the photon energy across the desired spectral range.

Spin effects on transport and zero-bias anomaly in a hybrid Majorana wire-quantum dot system.

Sci Rep

October 2023

Institute of Spintronics and Quantum Information, Faculty of Physics, Adam Mickiewicz University, Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego 2, 61-614, Poznań, Poland.

We examine the impact of spin effects on the nonequilibrium transport properties of a nanowire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes at its ends, coupled to a quantum dot junction with ferromagnetic leads. Using the real-time diagrammatic technique, we determine the current, differential conductance and current cross-correlations in the nonlinear response regime. We also explore transport in different magnetic configurations of the system, which can be quantified by the tunnel magnetoresistance.

Molecular Dynamics as a Tool for Virtual Ligand Screening.

Methods Mol Biol

September 2023

Institut de Pharmacologie et de Biologie Structurale (IPBS), Université de Toulouse, CNRS, Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier (UT3), Toulouse, France.

Rational drug design is essential for new drugs to emerge, especially when the structure of a target protein or nucleic acid is known. To that purpose, high-throughput virtual ligand screening campaigns aim at discovering computationally new binding molecules or fragments to modulate particular biomolecular interactions or biological activities, related to a disease process. The structure-based virtual ligand screening process primarily relies on docking methods which allow predicting the binding of a molecule to a biological target structure with a correct conformation and the best possible affinity.
