While rare diseases (RDs) are by definition of low prevalence, the total number of patients suffering from an RD is high, and the majority of them have neurologic manifestations, involving central, peripheral nerve, and muscle. In 2017, 24 European Reference Networks (ERNs), each focusing on a specific group of rare or low-prevalence complex diseases, were formed to improve the care for patients with an RD. One major aim is to have "the knowledge travel instead of the patient," which has been put into practice by the implementation of the Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) that enables clinicians to perform pan-European virtual consultations.

The aim of this work was to study the bioavailability of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA), i.e. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), carried by marine phospholipids (PL) and formulated in different supramolecular forms.

We report the synthesis, structural characterization and a combined computational and experimental study of the magnetic properties of two pivalate cobalt complexes, a mononuclear Co(ii) one and a tetranuclear Co(ii)Co(iii) mixed valence polynuclear one. The latter shows SMM behaviour revealed under an applied DC field with a thermal barrier of ca. 30 cm competing with direct and Raman relaxation processes.

Two new hexadecanuclear lanthanide complexes employing the 1,5-bis(salicylidene)carbohydrazide (Hbsc) ligand are reported herein. These polynuclear aggregates crystallize in the R3[combining macron] space group, which is unprecedented in a family of lanthanide complexes with such high nuclearity. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal weak intramolecular interactions between the magnetic centres, and in the case of compound 2 (Dy), single-molecule magnet properties are observed.

Four isostructural trinuclear 3d-4f-4(5)d heterotrimetallic complexes, with the general formula [L(2)CuLn(H2O)5(μ-NC)M(CN)7], were obtained from the association of binuclear 3d-4f complexes and {M(V)(CN)8}(3-) metalloligands (M = Mo, Ln = La ; M = W, Ln = La ; M = Mo, Ln = Gd ; M = Mo; Ln = Tb , where H2L(2) = 1,2-ethanediylbis(2-iminomethylene-6-methoxy-phenol)). The metalloligand coordinates through a single-cyanido group at the apical position of the copper(ii) ion belonging to the {Cu(II)Ln(III)} binuclear complex. The analysis of the magnetic data for the La(iii) derivatives (compounds and ), in the 1.

Irradiation cycling was performed to evaluate the ageing of the redox process observed on cerium-doped Rb2KInF6 compounds. An on-off switch of monovalent indium luminescence is observed for the lowest cerium doped material, whereas a nice colourimetric contrast between a bluish-green and orange emission is generated for the material with the highest cerium content. Photoluminescent properties combined with X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and magnetism measurements allowed an accurate characterization of the system.

Comproportionation reactions between MnCl2 and KMnO4 in the presence of arsonate or phosphonate ligands promote the cation-assisted assembly of high-nuclearity, wheel-shaped or toroidal {Mn8} () and {Mn24} () complexes; the closely corresponding reaction systems provide insights into the complexation behaviour of homologous phosphonate/arsonate ligand species.

During the past decades a number of field trials with gentle remediation options (GRO) have been established on trace element (TE) contaminated sites throughout Europe. Each research group selects different methods to assess the remediation success making it difficult to compare efficacy between various sites and treatments. This study aimed at selecting a minimum risk assessment battery combining chemical and ecotoxicological assays for assessing and comparing the effectiveness of GRO implemented in seven European case studies.
