Glucose, chief metabolic support for cancer cell survival and growth, is mainly imported into cells by facilitated glucose transporters (GLUTs). The increase in glucose uptake along with tumor progression is due to an increment of facilitative glucose transporters as GLUT1. GLUT1 prevents cell death of cancer cells caused by growth factors deprivation, but there is scarce information about its role on the damage caused by glucose deprivation, which usually occurs within the core of a growing tumor.

Posttreatment recurrence of colorectal cancer, the third most lethal cancer worldwide, is often driven by a subpopulation of cancer stem cells (CSC). The tight junction (TJ) protein claudin-2 is overexpressed in human colorectal cancer, where it enhances cell proliferation, colony formation, and chemoresistance While several of these biological processes are features of the CSC phenotype, a role for claudin-2 in the regulation of these has not been identified. Here, we report that elevated claudin-2 expression in stage II/III colorectal tumors is associated with poor recurrence-free survival following 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy, an outcome in which CSCs play an instrumental role.

Type 1 hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP1) is a poorly understood genetic neuromuscular disease characterized by episodic attacks of paralysis associated with low blood K The vast majority of HypoPP1 mutations involve the replacement of an arginine by a neutral residue in one of the S4 segments of the α1 subunit of the skeletal muscle voltage-gated Ca channel, which is thought to generate a pathogenic gating pore current. The V876E HypoPP1 mutation has the peculiarity of being located in the S3 segment of domain III, rather than an S4 segment, raising the question of whether such a mutation induces a gating pore current. Here we successfully transfer cDNAs encoding GFP-tagged human wild-type (WT) and V876E HypoPP1 mutant α1 subunits into mouse muscles by electroporation.

Despite current advances in cancer research, metastasis remains the leading factor in cancer-related deaths. Here, we identify sorting nexin 9 (SNX9) as a new regulator of breast cancer metastasis. We detected an increase in SNX9 expression in human breast cancer metastases compared with primary tumors and demonstrated that SNX9 expression in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells is necessary to maintain their ability to metastasize in a chick embryo model.

The distribution of phlebotomine sand flies is widely reported to be changing in Europe. This can be attributed to either the discovery of sand flies in areas where they were previously overlooked (generally following an outbreak of leishmaniasis or other sand fly-related disease) or to true expansion of their range as a result of climatic or environmental changes. Predominantly occurring in developing parts of the world, Buruli ulcer is a severely disabling mycobacterium infection which often leads to extensive necrosis of the skin. While the exact route of transmission remains uncertain, like many tropical diseases, associations with climate have been previously observed and could help identify the causative agent's ecological niche. In this paper, links between changes in rainfall and outbreaks of Buruli ulcer in French Guiana, an ultraperipheral European territory in the northeast of South America, were identified using a combination of statistical tests based on singular spectrum analysis, empirical mode decomposition and cross-wavelet coherence analysis.
