Oxidative stress is a biological principle affecting all life on Earth and is also an important factor in the pathogen-host relationship. The pathogenic free-living amoeba has several pathways to cope with reactive oxygen species and the damage that they cause. In this study, we aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the amoeba's response to different sources of oxidative stress.

A multi-modal computational fluid dynamics model of left atrial fibrillation haemodynamics validated with 4D flow MRI.

Biomech Model Mechanobiol

January 2025

Laboratoire d'Imagerie Biomédicale (LIB), Institut National de La Recherche Médicale (INSERM), Centre National de La Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Sorbonne Université, Paris, France.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is characterized by rapid and irregular contraction of the left atrium (LA). Impacting LA haemodynamics, this increases the risk of thrombi development and stroke. Flow conditions preceding stroke in these patients are not well defined, partly due the limited resolution of 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, Laboratory of Biochemistry and Protein Chemistry, Via Mario Negri, 2, 20156, Milano, ITALY.

The use of fluorescent labels is the most common tool to visualize cells. However, the internalization of dye molecules often modifies the cell behavior. In this paper we demonstrate that it is possible to transiently label cells using a 3D scaffold, a hydrogel, covalently functionalized with luminescent cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes.

This paper explores a novel challenge regarding bidirectional Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs): supervisory control amidst potential sensor faults. The proposed approach uses an event-based control architecture, guided by Supervisory Control Theory (SCT), to achieve non-blocking routing of AGVs. Unlike most routing approaches assuming full event observability, this paper investigates scenarios where events might become unobservable due to sensor faults or disturbances, which may affect the supervisor efficiency.

Background: Activating mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene occur in 7% to 23% of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A small proportion of these (3-5%) are exon 18 mutations. Neratinib, an irreversible pan-HER tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), had activity in the phase II SUMMIT basket study.

Introduction: Understanding sex and gender differences during outbreaks is critical to delivering an effective response. Although recommendations and minimum requirements exist, the incorporation of sex-disaggregated data and gender analysis into outbreak analytics and response for informed decision-making remains infrequent. A scoping review was conducted to provide an overview of the extent of sex-disaggregated data and gender analysis in outbreak response within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The Role and Future of Artificial Intelligence in Robotic Image-Guided Interventions.

Tech Vasc Interv Radiol

December 2024

Department of Interventional Radiology, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC. Electronic address:

Artificial intelligence and robotics are transforming interventional radiology, driven by advancements in computer vision, robotics and procedural automation. Historically focused on diagnostics, AI now also enhances procedural capabilities in IR, enabling future robotic systems to handle complex tasks such as catheter manipulation or needle placement with increasing precision and reliability. Early robotic systems in IR demonstrated improved accuracy in both vascular and percutaneous interventions, though none were equipped with automatic decision-making.

An image guided robot only becomes fully useful with integrated software leveraging image fusion. Image fusion is the process of registering and superimposing imaging data in the same coordinate space and can be helpful to image-guided robotic interventions. Effective percutaneous robotic procedures can utilize real-time image guidance and navigation which are powered by fusion technologies.

November 2024

Predictive Oncology Laboratory, Marseille Research Cancer Center, INSERM U1068, CNRS U7258, Institut Paoli-Calmettes, Aix-Marseille University, Equipe labellisée « Ligue Nationale Contre le Cancer », 13009 Marseille, France.

By identifying somatic mutations, whole-exome sequencing (WES) has become a technology of choice for the diagnosis and guiding treatment decisions in many cancers. Despite advances in the field of somatic variant detection and the emergence of sophisticated tools incorporating machine learning, accurately identifying somatic variants remains challenging. Each new somatic variant caller is often accompanied by claims of superior performance compared to predecessors.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in river and freshwater ecosystems. However, the hydraulic and hydrological mechanisms that regulate the activation and emissions of MPs from both the land surface and subsurface into rivers are not well understood. This study aims to quantify the instream MP concentration and MP load in a remote headwater catchment river (Taff Bargoed, Wales UK), which drains the UK's largest opencast coal mine (Ffos-y-fran), over a two-year period.
