Nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit high reactivity and mobility in the environment, and a significant capacity to penetrate living organisms, potentially leading to harmful effects. Volcanoes are the second major source of natural NPs emitted into the atmosphere, with an estimated flux of 342 Tg/year. Few studies have focused on their fate.

Inno4Vac, a public-private partnership funded by the IMI2/EU/EFPIA Joint Undertaking (IMI2 JU), brings together academic institutions, SMEs, and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate and de-risk vaccine development. The project has made significant strides in the selection and production of challenge agents for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and toxigenic Clostridioides difficile for controlled human infection model studies (CHIMs). A regulatory workshop held on March 20, 2024, addressed the standardisation of clinical procedures, ethical considerations, endpoints, and data integrity, highlighting the ongoing initiatives related to these CHIMs.

Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea in patients treated with a mandibular advancement device.

Objectives: Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea (TECSA) is well established in continuous positive airway pressure therapy but was barely studied in mandibular advancement device (MAD) treatment. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of TECSA in patients treated with a MAD and to determine its risk factors and clinical relevance.

Materials And Methods: A total of 139 patients from the IRSR Pays de la Loire Sleep Cohort suffering from snores or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and treated with a custom-made titratable MAD were included.

Estimating animal behaviour during heat stress (HS) is particularly insightful to monitor animal welfare but also to better understand how animals thermoregulate. The present study is a proof of concept combining computer vision to monitor animal behaviour, continuous monitoring of subcutaneous temperature and recording of ambient temperature, with the aim to study the link between behaviour and animal body temperature during HS. Effect of molecular weight of tyramine-modified hyaluronan on polarization state of THP-1 and peripheral blood mononuclear cells-derived macrophages.

The immunomodulatory properties of hyaluronan and its derivatives are key to their use in medicine and tissue engineering. In this work we evaluated the capability of soluble tyramine-modified hyaluronan (THA) synthesized from hyaluronan of two molecular weights (low M = 280 kDa and high M = 1640 kDa) for polarization of THP-1 and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)-derived macrophages (MΦs). We demonstrate the polarization effects of the supplemented THA by flow cytometry and bead-based multiplex immunoassay for the THP-1 derived MΦs and by semi-automated image analysis from confocal microscopy, immunofluorescent staining utilizing CD68 and CD206 surface markers, RT-qPCR gene expression analysis, as well as using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for PBMCs-derived MΦs.

Strategic evaluation of European Inland transport companies for European green deal compliance: A multi-criteria decision making-analysis.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the readiness of European inland transport companies for the European Green Deal by analyzing the causal relationships between key factors essential for EGD implementation. The research identifies six critical factors: Investment in Green Technologies, Policy Alignment and Compliance, Stakeholder Collaboration, Resource Management, Employee Training and Engagement, and Emission Reduction Initiatives. This research offers the first integrated evaluation of EGD readiness utilizing a combination of fuzzy-DEMATEL, multiple regression analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling aimed at uncovering systemic interactions among the factors in the system.

Tannin additions decrease the concentration of malodorous volatile sulfur compounds in wine-like model solutions and wine.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS), methanethiol (MeSH) and ethanethiol (EtSH) are volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced during winemaking and are associated with negative 'reductive' aromas in wine. Anecdotal evidence suggests that oenological tannins may be used to remediate the 'reductive' character of wines, yet little scientific evidence or explanation supporting this observation has been published. In this study, it was found that the addition of oenological tannins significantly decreased HS, MeSH, and EtSH in model wine by up to 92 %, 90 % and 86 %, respectively, after two weeks of storage.

Burying poultry carcasses on farms as a disposal option in crisis situations: learnings and perspectives from a field study during an avian influenza epizootic in France.

Appropriate disposal of dead farming animals is required to guarantee effective disease control while protecting the environment. In crisis situations, alternatives to rendering can be used, including on-farm burial. The objectives of this study were to: (i) describe the burial and monitoring protocols used on poultry farms in France in response to major avian influenza outbreaks; (ii) assess the effectiveness of the burial protocol, in terms of both technical and biosecurity aspects, and microbiological, physical and chemical changes of the buried materials and the environment over time; (iii) provide recommendations for future burial and follow-up protocols.

Optimized assessment of physical rehabilitation exercises using spatiotemporal, sequential graph-convolutional networks.

Rehabilitation is the process of helping people regain or improve lost or impaired function due to injury, illness, or disease. To assist in tracking the progress of patients undergoing rehabilitation, this paper proposes a lightweight graph-based deep-learning model for the automatic assessment of physical rehabilitation exercises. The model takes as input the 3D skeleton sequence of a patient performing a movement and outputs a continuous quality score, as a means for patient supervision that could complement or even substitute the need for ordinary clinical exams.

Tissue factor-bearing extracellular vesicles, procoagulant phospholipids and D-dimer as potential biomarkers for venous thromboembolism in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: A comprehensive analysis.

Background: Candidate biomarkers to improve venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk prediction in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) undergoing anti-myeloma therapy include tissue factor-bearing microvesicles (MV-TF), procoagulant phospholipids (procoag-PPL), and D-dimer.

Objective: We aimed to determine the levels of MV-TF, procoag-PPL, and D-dimer at baseline and during initial anti-myeloma therapy and their association with the risk of VTE.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal, observational study included 71 patients with newly diagnosed MM who were eligible for anti-myeloma therapy.

A randomized trial comparing endovascular and surgical management of ruptured intracranial aneurysms excluded from previous trials.

Objective: Many patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms (RIAs) underrepresented or excluded from previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing surgery with endovascular treatment (EVT) are still considered for surgical clipping, but the best management of these patients remains unknown.

Methods: The International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial-2 was a randomized trial comparing surgical versus EVT of RIAs considered for surgical clipping, despite the results of previous RCTs, and also eligible for EVT. The primary endpoint was death or dependency according to the modified Rankin Scale score (mRS score > 2) at 1 year.

Beyond the Dailey-Townes Model: Chemical Information from the Electric Field Gradient.

In this work, we reexamine the Dailey-Townes model by systematically investigating the electric field gradient (EFG) in various chlorine compounds, dihalogens, and the uranyl ion (). Through the use of relativistic molecular calculations and projection analysis, we decompose the EFG expectation value in terms of atomic reference orbitals. We show how the Dailey-Townes model can be seen as an approximation to our projection analysis.
