Global ocean surface temperatures were at record levels for more than a year from April 2023 onwards, exceeding the previous record in 2015-2016 by 0.25 °C on average between April 2023 and March 2024. The nearly global extent and unprecedented intensity of this event prompted questions about how exceptional it was and whether climate models can represent such record-shattering jumps in surface ocean temperatures.

The eukaryote Tree of Life (eToL) depicts the relationships among all eukaryotic organisms; its root represents the Last Eukaryotic Common Ancestor (LECA) from which all extant complex lifeforms are descended. Locating this root is crucial for reconstructing the features of LECA, both as the endpoint of eukaryogenesis and the start point for the evolution of the myriad complex traits underpinning the diversification of living eukaryotes. However, the position of the root remains contentious due to pervasive phylogenetic artefacts stemming from inadequate evolutionary models, poor taxon sampling and limited phylogenetic signal.

In a subset of children and adolescents, SARS-CoV-2 infection induces a severe acute hyperinflammatory shock termed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) at four to eight weeks after infection. MIS-C is characterized by a specific T cell expansion and systemic hyperinflammation. The pathogenesis of MIS-C remains largely unknown.

State-of-the-art climate models project a substantial decline in precipitation for the Mediterranean region in the future. Supporting this notion, several studies based on observed precipitation data spanning recent decades have suggested a decrease in Mediterranean precipitation, with some attributing a large fraction of this change to anthropogenic influences. Conversely, certain researchers have underlined that Mediterranean precipitation exhibits considerable spatiotemporal variability driven by atmospheric circulation patterns maintaining stationarity over the long term.

Frictional interfaces are found in systems ranging from biological joints to earthquake faults. When and how these interfaces slide is a fundamental problem in geosciences and engineering. It is believed that there exists a threshold shear force, called static friction, below which the interface is stationary, despite many studies suggesting that this concept is outdated.

Ancient DNA from the Mediterranean region has revealed long-range connections and population transformations associated with the spread of food-producing economies. However, in contrast to Europe, genetic data from this key transition in northern Africa are limited, and have only been available from the far western Maghreb (Morocco). Here we present genome-wide data for nine individuals from the Later Stone Age through the Neolithic period from Algeria and Tunisia.

Who the first inhabitants of Western Europe were, what their physical characteristics were, and when and where they lived are some of the pending questions in the study of the settlement of Eurasia during the Early Pleistocene epoch. The available palaeoanthropological information from Western Europe is limited and confined to the Iberian Peninsula. Here we present most of the midface of a hominin found at the TE7 level of the Sima del Elefante site (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain), dated to between 1.

CO electroreduction has recently been explored as an alternative to CO electroreduction for multicarbon product formation, because it bypasses the large carbon loss associated with CO electroreduction. Although ethylene is generally obtained as the major product, shifting electrolysis towards the production of alcohols is an industrially promising path forward. Here we report a trimetallic-copper-based catalyst, consisting of copper nitride doped with gold nanoparticles and isolated silver atoms, with high selectivity for the formation of C alcohols (Faradic efficiency for ethanol + n-propanol is >70%), within gas-fed flow cells at high current densities.

In modern applications, the shrinking available space on terminals coupled with the increasing number of frequency bands has prompted the greatest demand for antenna miniaturization and multi-band features. This work introduces an innovative method for designing a dual-band planar antenna with an exceptionally compact size, addressing the pressing requirement. Two half-mode patches, both operating in two modes (TM of 3.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV) are rare in adolescent and young adult (AYA). These conditions, similar to those in older patients, are linked with thrombotic complications and the potential progression to secondary myelofibrosis (sMF). This retrospective study of ET and PV patients diagnosed before age 25 evaluated complication rates and impact of cytoreductive drugs on outcomes.

Human language develops in social interactions. In other ape species, the role of social learning in vocal ontogeny can be typically underappreciated, mainly because it has received little empirical attention. Here, we examine the development of pant hoot vocalisations during vocal exchanges in immature wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) of the Sonso community of the Budongo Forest, Uganda.

As the prevalence of multimorbidity grows, provision of effective healthcare is more challenging. Both multimorbidity and complexity in healthcare delivery may be associated with worse outcomes. We studied consecutive, unique emergency non-surgical hospitalisations for patients over 50 years old to three hospitals in Scotland, UK between 2016 and 2024 using linked primary care and hospital records to define multimorbidity (2 + long-term conditions), and timestamped hospital electronic health record (EHR) contacts with nursing and rehabilitation providers to describe intensity of inpatient care.

Brain information processing complexity is conventionally recognized as derived from neuronal activity, with neurons and their dynamic signalling responsible for the transfer and processing of information. However, the brain also contains other non-neuronal cells, glial cells, which exceed the number of neurons and are involved in the processes related with information coding by neural networks and underlying brain functions. Decisive advances in the characterization of the molecular and physiological properties of glial cells shed light on their active roles in neurotransmission and neuronal physiopathology.

Background: We predicted the number of cancer deaths and rates for 2025 in the European Union (EU), its five most populous countries, and the UK, focusing on breast cancer.
Materials And Methods: We derived population data and death certificates for all cancers and major sites for the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK since 1970, from the World Health Organization and United Nations databases. Estimates for 2025 were computed by linear regression on recent trends identified through Poisson joinpoint regression, considering the slope of the most recent trend segment.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin cancer that mainly affects the elderly, and whose incidence is increasing. Although the exact origin of this cancer remains uncertain, research in recent years has revealed that MCC develops through two oncogenesis pathways: virally induced by the Merkel polyomavirus (80% of cases) and induced by mutations linked to ultraviolet rays (20% of cases). MCC is an aggressive cancer, with a high mortality rate and limited therapeutic options in advanced stage.

Amongst Ewing sarcoma family of tumours, (EFST), cutaneous/subcutaneous Ewing sarcoma are defined as tumours arising from cutaneous or subcutaneous tissue, not invading the underlying aponeurosis. They are rare tumours, with less than 200 patients published. They are typically small tumours (less than 5cm), and can arise at any anatomical location, with a particular tropism for distal, truncal and head/neck locations, compared to classical Ewing sarcoma.

Patients who develop Ewing sarcoma with extra-pulmonary metastasis have a poor prognosis. A recent French protocol, CombinaiR3, was set up to evaluate the efficacy of induction chemotherapy followed by high-dose chemotherapy and metronomic maintenance treatment. It is now closed for inclusions and while waiting for the results, we propose a French consensus guideline for the management of patients diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma with extra-pulmonary dissemination.

This updated Heart Valve Collaboratory framework addresses the growing concern for transcatheter valve failure (TVF) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). With the increasing volume of redo-TAV and surgical TAV explantation, there is a critical need for standardized pathways and protocols for evaluating TVF using echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography. This document clarifies prior definitions of bioprosthetic valve deterioration and bioprosthetic valve failure in a practical, imaging directed context for TAVR.
