Purpose: To describe the longitudinal changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGC-IPL) thicknesses in highly myopic eyes with and without glaucoma, and to investigate the effects of high myopia (HM) on the sectoral patterns of pRNFL and mGC-IPL thinning.

Design: Longitudinal cohort study.

Participants: A total of 243 eyes from 243 individuals with 3-year follow-up were included in this study: 109 eyes in the HM group, 64 eyes in the open-angle glaucoma (OAG) group and 70 eyes in the highly myopic glaucoma (HMG) group.

Hepatic manifestations in VPS53-related pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 2E: a case report.

Pathogenic variants in VPS53 are associated with pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 2E (PCH2E), characterized by microcephaly, severe neurodevelopmental impairment and epilepsy. We present a case of a female neonate with VPS53 pathogenic variants exhibiting the classic phenotypic features along with liver disease and deafness, which had not been described in previously reported cases. Similarly, while liver abnormalities have been reported in patients with mutations in other genes coding for proteins of the GARP or EARP complex, of which VPS53 is a subunit, liver disease has not been described in PCH2E until now.

What Is the Clinical Value of Long Head of Biceps Tendon Tests in Distal Supraspinatus Tendon Rupture? A Prospective Multicenter Study.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical value of diagnostic tests for the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) injuries in the setting of a Patte stage 1 supraspinatus tendon rupture.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort multicenter study of 361 patients aged 30 to 80 years with Patte stage 1 distal supraspinatus tendon rupture. The LHBT was assessed clinically by palpation of the bicipital groove, the speed test, the Yergason test and the Kibler test.

NATURAL HISTORY OF MEDULLARY THYROID CARCINOMA IN MEN-2 PATIENTS CARRYING A VARIANT AT CODON 804 IN THE RET PROTO-ONCOGENE: A STUDY BY THE FRENCH NEUROENDOCRINE TUMOR GROUP (GTE).

Animal-free coacervates: The combination of fungal chitosan-gum Arabic for the encapsulation of lipophilic compounds.

In this study, fungal chitosan (FC) and gum Arabic (GA) were combined to develop non-animal complex coacervates for encapsulation. Optimal coacervate formation occurred at pH 5 with a 1:4 (FC:GA) weight ratio. Innovative complementary approaches, including rheology coupled with phase-contrast microscopy, revealed that FC-GA coacervates could withstand high shear rates, reverting to their original structure afterward, making them suitable for industrial applications.

Advocating a specific risk calculation of trisomy 18 in case of low maternal serum markers during screening for fetal Down syndrome.

Background: In France, legislation concerning pregnancy monitoring only considers screening for Down syndrome (T21), while the contingent introduction of the circulating cell free DNA test (DPNI) also allows screening for trisomies 13 and 18 with similar performances.

Methods: We retrospectively studied more than 800,000 patients among whom 7971 presented serum markers suggestive of T18 (but without increased risk of T21), of which 438 benefited from NIPT and of a complete pregnancy follow-up.

Results: We show that the use of a specific risk calculation for T18 would have improve the relevance of the prescription.

Measuring the impact of hospitalisation for infectious diseases on the quality of life of older patients in four European countries: the AEQUI longitudinal matched cohort study (2020-2023).

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of hospitalisation for infectious diseases on the Health-Related Quality of life (HRQOL), multidimensional frailty, and functioning of older patients, we conducted a longitudinal matched cohort study in four European countries.

Methods: HRQOL, frailty, and functioning were assessed using validated questionnaires at inclusion, at discharge, and up to six months later (M6) in patients aged over 65 years hospitalised for severe acute respiratory or bloodstream infections, and matched controls hospitalised for non-infectious conditions. Comparative analyses employed multilevel mixed-effect linear or logistic models to assess changes from inclusion.

Data management and sharing.

Guided by the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), responsible data sharing requires well-organized, high-quality datasets. However, researchers often struggle with implementing Data Management and Sharing Plans (DMSPs) due to lack of knowledge on how to do this, time constraints, legal, technical and financial challenges, particularly concerning data ownership and privacy. While patients support data sharing, researchers and funders may hesitate, fearing the loss of intellectual property or competitive advantage.

Snakebites present a significant health risk in the Sahara, where access to modern medical facilities is limited, leading local populations to rely on traditional remedies. The medicinal plants used by indigenous communities in the Oued Righ region of the Northern Algerian Sahara are vital for treating envenomation from snakebites. This study provides an ethnobotanical inventory of medicinal plants used by local communities in the Oued Righ region for snakebite treatment and evaluates their therapeutic potential.

Ergothioneine improves healthspan of aged animals by enhancing cGPDH activity through CSE-dependent persulfidation.

Ergothioneine (ET), a dietary thione/thiol, is receiving growing attention for its possible benefits in healthy aging and metabolic resilience. Our study investigates ET's effects on healthspan in aged animals, revealing lifespan extension and enhanced mobility in Caenorhabditis elegans, accompanied by improved stress resistance and reduced age-associated biomarkers. In aged rats, ET administration enhances exercise endurance, muscle mass, and vascularization, concomitant with higher NAD levels in muscle.

Long waves of alcohol consumption and the sustainable development goals.

Though the United Nations deals with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in blocs of 15 years at a time, "sustainable" indicates a longer-term focus, aiming at steady human progress, including in public health and welfare. But the alcohol history in many countries shows "long waves" of consumption, repetitively rising, then falling, then rising again. Underlying this dynamic are competing interests pushing in opposite directions.

Does climate policy uncertainty shape the response of stock markets to oil price changes? Evidence from GCC stock markets.

This paper investigates how climate policy uncertainty (CPU) drives the sensitivity of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries' stock markets to oil price changes. Based on a sample of monthly observations from 2008 to 2022, it appears that CPU negatively moderates the link between lagged oil price changes and subsequent GCC stock market returns. Interestingly, the impact of CPU on the oil-stock relationship is non-linear.

Role of narrow band imaging in assessing bronchial mucosal hypervascularization in COVID-19 patients.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 virus which targets the lung vasculature is supposed to affect both pulmonary and bronchial arteries. This study evaluated the tracheobronchial vascularization density observed with narrow band imaging (NBI) in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia. To determine if the observed changes were specific of COVID-19 patients, the procedure was also performed in non-COVID-19 patients.

Loneliness is associated with different structural brain changes in schizophrenia spectrum disorders and major depression.

Background: Loneliness, distress from having fewer social contacts than desired, has been recognized as a significant public health crisis. Although a substantial body of research has established connections between loneliness and various forms of psychopathology, our understanding of the neural underpinnings of loneliness in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) remains limited.

Methods: In this study, structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) data were collected from 57 SSD and 45 MDD patients as well as 41 healthy controls (HC).
