Electronic address:

Background: Deaths related to falls are a substantial public health problem worldwide, and insight into trends and differences in global fall-related deaths can be valuable for identifying prevention strategies and developing effective policies. Thus, we aimed to estimate global fall-related mortality rate trends and forecast future fall-related deaths.

Methods: In this global time-series analysis and modelling study, we investigated temporal trends in fall-related mortality rates from 1990 to 2021 using the WHO Mortality Database, following the GATHER guidelines, and forecasted trends until 2040 across 59 high-income and upper-middle-income countries.

Background: Script Concordance Tests (SCTs) represent an innovative assessment method which have been introduced in the 2024 French National Ranking Examinations (EDN). These tests compare a student's clinical reasoning with that of a panel of experts under conditions of uncertainty. Typically, the question involves the impact of new information on an initially proposed hypothesis, with answers given on a Likert scale.

Drought stress during the plant's growing season is a serious constraint to plant establishment in arid and semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as environmentally friendly and innovative management approach can be used to produce seedlings better adapted to these environments. We tested native PGPR strains isolated from drought-tolerant tree and shrub species originating from two climatically contrasting regions: hot-dry (Dehloran) and milder Mediterranean climate (Ilam).

Owing to its high spatial resolution and its high sensitivity to chemical element detection, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique enables to address high-level materials characterization of advanced technologies in the microelectronics field. TEM instruments fitted with various techniques are well-suited for assessing the local structural and chemical order of specific details. Among these techniques, 4D-STEM is suitable to estimate the strain distribution of a large field of view.

Incidence and survival of European adolescents and young adults diagnosed with sarcomas: EUROCARE-6 results.

Eur J Cancer

January 2025

Department of Medical Oncology, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan, Italy.

Background: Epidemiological data for sarcoma in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and across age groups are limited. We aim to: 1) update sarcoma incidence, survival, and changes over time in European AYAs; 2) provide an updated comparison of sarcoma survival in AYAs versus children and mature adults.

Methods: We calculated crude incidence rates (IR) per 100,000 European population per year from 2006 to 2013.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains a significant healthcare challenge, necessitating innovative therapeutic approaches to address its complex and multifactorial nature. Traditional drug discovery strategies targeting single molecular targets are not sufficient for the effective treatment of AD. In recent years, MTDLs have emerged as promising candidates for AD therapy, aiming to simultaneously modulate multiple pathological targets.

Objective: We report updated results with longer follow-up in patients with MSI-H/dMMR endometrial cancer (EC) in cohort D (advanced EC of any MSI/dMMR status) and cohort K (any MSI-H/dMMR advanced solid tumor, except colorectal) of the phase 2 KEYNOTE-158 study (NCT02628067) and the first results from patients with non-MSI-H/non-dMMR advanced EC (cohort D).

Methods: Patients received pembrolizumab 200 mg Q3W for ≥35 cycles. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) per RECIST v1.

Iodine intakes of pregnant females from Québec, Canada.

Reproduction, Mother and Child Health Unit, Research Center of the CHU de Québec, Université Laval, Québec City, Québec, Canada; Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction, CHU de Québec-Université Laval, Québec City, Québec, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Adequate maternal iodine intake is important for fetal brain development. Based on iodine intakes of non-pregnant females of reproductive age from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (2016 -2017) it can be extrapolated that most pregnant females in Canada will not meet iodine requirements without supplementation.

Objectives: To assess iodine intakes of 500 pregnant, nulliparous females from Québec, Canada and report on use of multivitamin/mineral (MVM) supplements and coverage of iodized salt.

Objectives: The mental and physical health consequences of loneliness are well documented. However, loneliness's socio-political ramifications have been largely unexplored. We theorize that loneliness, due to its physiologically dysregulating impact on the nervous system, facilitates greater susceptibility towards populist radical right parties.

Background: The current cervical cancer screening and diagnosis have limitations due to their subjectivity and lack of reproducibility. We describe the development of a deep learning (DL)-based diagnostic risk prediction model and evaluate its potential for clinical impact.

Method: We developed and internally validated a DL model which accommodates both clinical data and colposcopy images in predicting the patients CIN2+ status using a retrospective cohort of 6356 cases of LEEP-conization/cone-biopsy (gold-standard diagnosis) following an abnormal screening result.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) aim at mimicking information processing in biological networks. In cognitive neuroscience, graph modeling is a powerful framework widely used to study brain structural and functional connectivity. Yet, the extension of graph modeling to ANNs has been poorly explored especially in terms of functional connectivity (i.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of simulated breathing in virtual reality (VR) for manipulating the level of perceived effort of people with long COVID during sessions of physical rehabilitation.

Methods: We conducted a within-participants randomized prospective study during a cycling exercise in immersive VR with three counterbalanced conditions of simulated breathing: slower breathing, neutral breathing, and faster breathing compared to theirs. 37 participants with long COVID and deconditioning were included in the study, 36 of which could finish the experiment.

Resilience of hierarchical actuators highlighted by a myosin-to-muscle mock-up.

Skeletal muscle is the main actuator of various families of vertebrates (mammals, fish, reptiles). It displays remarkable robustness to micro-damage, that supposedly originates both from its redundant hierarchical structure and its nervous command. A bioinspired mock-up was designed and manufactured mimicking sarcomeres (micro-scale) and its series and parallel structure from fibre to muscle.

Research Center for Clinical Neuroimmunology and Neuroscience Basel (RC2NB), Departments of Head, Spine and Neuromedicine, Clinical Research, Biomedicine and Biomedical Engineering, University Hospital and University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland.

Background: People with MS show abnormal thinning of the retinal layers, which is associated with clinical disability and brain atrophy, and is a potential surrogate marker of neurodegeneration and treatment effects.

Objective: To evaluate the utility of retinal thickness as a surrogate marker of neurodegeneration and treatment effect in participants with secondary progressive MS (SPMS) from the optical coherence tomography (OCT) substudy of the EXPAND Phase 3 clinical trial (siponimod versus placebo).

Methods: In the OCT substudy population (n = 159), treatment effects on change in the average thickness of the retinal layer, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), and combined macular ganglion cell and inner plexiform layers (GCIPL) were analyzed by high-definition spectral domain OCT at months 3, 12, and 24.

Carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds are essential building blocks and starting materials for the production of a wide range of fine chemicals and materials. Their recovery from kraft black liquor, an industrial effluent from pulp and paper mills, is a promising way to produce alternative bio-based chemicals. Reliable methods are needed to identify and quantify the molecules of interest in complex mixtures such as black liquors.
