Translational Research on HIV and Endemic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (TransVIHMI), University of Montpellier, National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM), French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), Montpellier, France.

Objectives: Chest x-ray (CXR) plays an important role in childhood tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis, but access to quality CXR remains a major challenge in resource-limited settings. Digital CXR (d-CXR) can solve some image quality issues and facilitate their transfer for quality control. We assess the implementation of introducing d-CXR in 12 district hospitals (DHs) in 2021-2022 across Cambodia, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Uganda as part of the TB-speed decentralisation study on childhood TB diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Chest X-ray (CXR) misinterpretation poses a significant challenge to accurately diagnosing tuberculosis (TB) in children, and implementing external quality assurance (EQA) can improve the skills of CXR readers.
  • In a study across six resource-limited countries, 60.8% of eligible CXRs were selected for re-reading under EQA, showing a decrease in discordant interpretations over time and a 100% sensitivity in clinician readings following EQA.
  • The primary challenges faced included the transfer of CXRs and the workload of re-readers, indicating that while EQA can enhance diagnosis, operational issues need to be addressed for success.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how the position of the anterior arm of surgical mesh affects the success of laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in treating apical prolapse in women.
  • It analyzed data from 63 women who underwent the procedure, measuring the distance from the bladder neck to the mesh and evaluating surgical outcomes at various intervals post-surgery.
  • Findings revealed that a shorter bladder neck-mesh distance correlated with improved apical prolapse repair and patient satisfaction (PGI-I scores) but was associated with a higher risk of post-operative stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecological Clinic, University of Siena, Siena, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - Background: Endometriosis can cause ureters to be displaced, complicating surgery; this study looks at using a preoperative dye called indocyanine green (ICG) to help identify and manage this issue during surgery.
  • - Method: Researchers collected and analyzed data from patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis suspected to involve the ureter between January 2022 and December 2023, comparing outcomes between those who received ICG and those who did not.
  • - Results: Patients who received ICG had significantly shorter ureterolysis length and duration, as well as reduced overall operative time, with no reported complications during follow-up; more extensive studies are needed to fully validate these results. *

Endometriosis-Related Ovarian Cancer: Where Are We Now? A Narrative Review towards a Pragmatic Approach.

J Clin Med

March 2024

Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecological Clinic, University of Siena, 53100 Siena, Italy.

Background: Endometriosis affects more than 10% of reproductive-aged women, causing pelvic pain and infertility. Despite the benign nature of endometriosis, ovarian endometriomas carry a higher risk of developing endometrioid carcinomas (EnOCs) and clear cell ovarian carcinomas (CCCs). Atypical endometriosis, defined as cytological atypia resembling intraepithelial cancer, is considered the precursor of endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC).

Unlabelled: The French College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) recommends the use of intrauterine tamponade balloon (IUTB) in postpartum haemorrhage for bleeding that is refractory after sulprostone before either surgery or interventional radiology. However, the elapsed time between uterotonic drug injection and the insertion of intrauterine tamponade balloon was not reliably assessed.

Objective: To evaluate the role of the timing of IUTB insertion and to assess the correlation between the time of insertion and outcome.

Despite wide screening campaigns and early detection, cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer among women. Radical hysterectomy, whether by open, laparoscopic or by robotic-assisted techniques, is the mainstay treatment. However, for adequate surgical results and good oncological prognosis, a gynecological surgeon should be trained to perform those procedures.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a prevalence of six to ten percent in women of childbearing age. As long as the aetiology of endometriosis is not fully understood and the disease has no definitive treatment, an examination of the environmental factors or interventions that could modify or cure endometriosis would greatly benefit women suffering from this chronic condition. This literature review utilized the electronic databases PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE until February 2021.

March 2021

Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Tenon University Hospital, Assistance Publique des Hopitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Sorbonne University, France.

The preoperative work-up and optimal surgical approach to colorectal endometriosis is a highly studied topic lacking definitive recommendations. Synthesis of the available data can be extremely challenging for surgeons due to the heterogeneity of existing comparisons, a variety of studied surgical outcomes, and a predominant focus on operative complications. While these considerations are extremely important for surgeons performing such complex gynaecologic surgery there is still much to be desired with regards to evidence based guidelines for the preoperative assessment and surgical technique for colorectal endometriosis.
