Introduction: China has the largest population of individuals with diabetes, and the prevalence of various complications among patients with type 2 diabetes remains high. Diabetic nephropathy affects approximately 20% to 40% of diabetic patients, becoming a major cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. Furthermore, around 50% of patients develop diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), which is closely associated with physical disability, increased healthcare costs, and reduced work productivity.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death worldwide and currently there are limited therapies that can regenerate the lost cardiac cells following MI. To enhance the therapeutic effects of human induced pluripotent stem cell‑derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC‑CM) transplantation for treatment of MI, the present study sought to increase the pro‑angiogenic effect of hiPSC‑CM by overexpressing a mutated hypoxia‑inducible factor 1‑alpha (HIF‑1α; P402A; P564A) via lentivirus transfection. Morphology and the electrophysiology of the genetically engineered cell were both unchanged.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists created a smart computer program called UWF-CKDS to help find out if someone has chronic kidney disease (CKD) using special images of the eyes.
  • They tested this program with information from 23 hospitals in China and found that it worked really well.
  • The program looks at tiny details in the eye that relate to kidney health, making it better than older methods at predicting CKD for many people.

  • This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of using Conbercept injections followed by dexamethasone implants to treat stubborn macular edema from central retinal vein occlusion.
  • The study involved 34 patients, tracking their central retinal thickness, visual acuity, and intraocular pressure before and after treatment over a year.
  • Results showed that while central retinal thickness and intraocular pressure improved significantly, there were no notable changes in visual acuity or vessel density, suggesting a mixed outcome for the treatment regimen.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a pivotal event contributing to the development of ageing-related kidney disorders. Lon protease 1 (LONP1) has been reported to be responsible for ageing-related renal fibrosis; however, the underlying mechanism(s) of LONP1-driven kidney ageing with respect to mitochondrial disturbances remains to be further explored. The level of LONP1 was tested in the kidneys of aged humans and mice.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. Research has identified a close relationship between fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and DR. FGF21 is a member of the FGF subfamily, which is activated by the Klotho coenzyme involved in the occurrence of DR.

Hemoglobin nanoclusters-mediated regulation of KPNA4 in hypoxic tumor microenvironment enhances photodynamic therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma.

J Nanobiotechnology

August 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, The First Hospital of China Medical University, No. 155, Nanjing North Street, Heping District, Shenyang, 110001, Liaoning Province, China.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumor known for its hypoxic environment, which contributes to resistance against the anticancer drug Sorafenib (SF). Addressing SF resistance in HCC requires innovative strategies to improve tumor oxygenation and effectively deliver therapeutics.

Results: In our study, we explored the role of KPNA4 in mediating hypoxia-induced SF resistance in HCC.

MSI2 regulates NLK-mediated EMT and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway to promote pancreatic cancer progression.

Cancer Cell Int

August 2024

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Hospital, China Medical University, Shenyang, 110001, China.

Background: The incidence of pancreatic cancer is increasing by years, and the 5-year survival rate is very low. Our team have revealed that Musashi2 (MSI2) could promote aggressive behaviors in pancreatic cancer by downregulating Numb and p53. MSI2 also facilitates EMT in pancreatic cancer induced by EGF through the ZEB1-ERK/MAPK signaling pathway.

Structural and Biochemical Analysis of Butanol Dehydrogenase From Thermotoga maritima.

Proteins

December 2024

Department of Bioengineering, College of Life Science, Dalian Minzu University, Dalian, Liaoning, China.

Butanol dehydrogenase (BDH) plays a crucial role in butanol biosynthesis by catalyzing the conversion of butanal to butanol using the coenzyme NAD(P)H. In this study, we observed that BDH from Thermotoga maritima (TmBDH) exhibits dual coenzyme specificity and catalytic activity with NADPH as the coenzyme under highly alkaline conditions. Additionally, a thermal stability analysis on TmBDH demonstrated its excellent activity retention even at elevated temperatures of 80°C.
