Membrane-coated nanoparticles as a biomimetic targeted delivery system for tumour therapy.

Biomater Transl

March 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.

Drug therapy towards tumours often causes adverse effects because of their non-specific nature. Membrane-coated technology and membrane-coated nanoparticles provide an advanced and promising platform of targeted and safe delivery. By camouflaging the nanoparticles with natural derived or artificially modified cell membranes, the nano-payloads are bestowed with properties from cell membranes such as longer circulation, tumour or inflammation-targeting, immune stimulation, augmenting the performance of traditional therapeutics.

Background: Fractional picosecond lasers (FPL) are reported to be effective and safe for atrophic acne scars and post-acne erythema. However, there is no evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of FPL treatment for non-acne atrophic scars and scar erythema among Chinese patients.

Methods: In this retrospective study, 12 Chinese patients with non-acne atrophic scars, including nine with scar erythema, were treated with one to three sessions of 1064 nm FPL treatment.

Background: Identifying the diagnosis as well as prognosis for patients presented with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains challenging. We aimed to identify the role of lysophosphatidylcholine acyl-transferase (LPCAT) for CAP along with assessing this protein's effectiveness as a biomarker for severity of disease and mortality.

Methods: Prospective multicenter research study was carried out among hospitalized patients.

Background: EWSR1::NFATC2 rearranged sarcomas are a group of rare round, undifferentiated sarcomas with clinicopathological features different from those of Ewing's sarcoma (ES) family and other non-ES sarcomas. We report 4 cases of this rare sarcoma and review their features.

Materials And Methods: Four cases of EWSR1::NFATC2 rearranged round cell sarcoma of the bone from the Pathology Department of Peking University People's Hospital were retrospectively studied.

Genomic and transcriptomic characterization of pre-operative chemotherapy response in patients with osteosarcoma.

Sci Rep

November 2023

Department of Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 31, Xinjiekou East Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, 100035, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * The analysis revealed a trend where chemotherapy responders had a higher burden of chromosomal copy number variants (CNVs) and a greater percentage of a specific signature linked to DNA repair, compared to non-responders.
  • * Transcriptomic data identified differing gene expression patterns between responders (11 up-regulated genes) and non-responders (18 up-regulated genes), indicating potential pathways influencing chemotherapy response and a promising avenue for future predictive research.

Background: Shared decision-making (SDM) has broad application in emergencies. Most published studies have focused on SDM for a certain disease or expert opinions on future research gaps without revealing the full picture or detailed guidance for clinical practice. This study is to investigate the optimal application of SDM to guide life-sustaining treatment (LST) in emergencies.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteosarcoma (OS) is a rare and aggressive cancer, with limited understanding of its molecular characteristics, particularly in Chinese patients.
  • A genomic analysis of 73 Chinese OS cases revealed frequent mutations in genes like TP53 and RB1, and notable differences in mutation patterns compared to Western OS patients.
  • Additionally, specific genetic alterations related to DNA damage repair and signaling pathways were linked to disease progression and survival outcomes, highlighting the potential for personalized treatment approaches.

The burden of appendicitis and surgical site infection of appendectomy worldwide.

J Infect Dev Ctries

March 2023

Department of Hospital-Acquired Infection Control, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, The Fourth Medical College of Peking University, Beijing, China.

Introduction: Appendicitis is a global abdominal disease and is often treated by appendectomy. Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common complication after an appendectomy that causes a significant burden on health systems. This study aimed to evaluate the trends and variations in the burden of appendicitis by year, region, socioeconomic status, and health expenditure and to assess associated SSI by appendicitis burden, surgical approach, and type of appendicitis.

Osteochondrogenesis by TGF-β3, BMP-2 and noggin growth factor combinations in an muscle tissue model: Temporal function changes affecting tissue morphogenesis.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

March 2023

Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, Musculoskeletal University Center Munich (MUM), University Hospital, LMU Munich, Munich, Germany.

In the absence of clear molecular insight, the biological mechanism behind the use of growth factors applied in osteochondral regeneration is still unresolved. The present study aimed to resolve whether multiple growth factors applied to muscle tissue , such as TGF-β3, BMP-2 and Noggin, can lead to appropriate tissue morphogenesis with a specific osteochondrogenic nature, thereby revealing the underlying molecular interaction mechanisms during the differentiation process. Interestingly, although the results showed the typical modulatory effect of BMP-2 and TGF-β3 on the osteochondral process, and Noggin seemingly downregulated specific signals such as BMP-2 activity, we also discovered a synergistic effect between TGF-β3 and Noggin that positively influenced tissue morphogenesis.

Introduction: Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (LDD) and osteoporosis (OP) are age-related conditions that induce low back pain and have an impact on quality of life. The relationship between LDD and changes in bone mineral density (BMD) is, however, contentious and ever-changing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between lumbar vertebral volumetric BMD (vBMD) and LDD in an urban population of young and middle-aged community-dwelling Chinese adults.

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have a superior potential of osteogenic differentiation (OD) and a promising stem cell type to treat bone defects. This study sought to investigate the molecular mechanism of long noncoding RNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 14 (SNHG14) in OD of BMSCs. Western blot analysis or RT-qPCR showed that SNHG14, neural precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated 4-like (NEDD4L), and Purkinje cell protein 4 (PCP4) were upregulated whereas forkhead box A2 (FOXA2) was declined in OD of BMSCs.
