Tidal marshes globally face escalating threats from rising sea levels. As critical determinants of tidal marsh platform elevation maintenance, the contributions of marsh soil compaction and subsidence (SCS) are often overshadowed by vertical accretion (VA). Here, we reveal the pervasive presence of the SCS within tidal marshes and its driving forces.

Scaffolds with multiphasic structures are considered to be superior for guided tissue regeneration. Two types of tilapia skin collagen gradient membranes (stepped gradient and linear gradient) with multiphasic structures were prepared by controlling the collagen concentrations and the freezing rates. The results revealed that collagen gradient membranes were more capable of guiding tissue regeneration compared to homogeneous membranes.

The Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) is one of the areas in China most severely affected by harmful algal blooms (HABs). This study explored the distributive patterns of HABs in the YRE and how they are influenced by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and other environmental factors. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was employed to detect and quantify the four predominant HAB species in the YRE, Karenia mikimotoi, Margalefidinium polykrikoides, Prorocentrum donghaiense, and Heterosigma akashiwo.

The rapid expansion of laver (Porphyra yezoensis) cultivation on lower tidal flats has become integral to the local economy, yet it also raises concerns regarding its potential impact on the morphological evolution due to increasing human activities. This study utilizes integrated near-bed field measurements to assess morphological dynamics and quantify sediment erosion processes, highlighting the significant impact of laver harvest on tidal flat stability. Our results show that erosion and bed coarsening in the cultivated areas experienced a notable intensification immediately after harvest, with net erosion in cultivated areas reaching approximately -38.

The bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in marine ecosystems have attracted great attention in recent research, but our understanding of the trophic transfer mechanisms involved is limited. In this study, we investigated the trophodynamics of OPFRs and their metabolites in a subtropical coastal food web collected from the northern Beibu Gulf, China, and characterized their trophodynamics using fugacity- and biotransformation-based approaches. Eleven OPFRs and all seven metabolites were simultaneously quantified in the shellfish, crustacean, pelagic fish, and benthic fish samples, with total concentrations ranging from 164 to 4.

Alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) play an essential role in water conservation, biodiversity protection and climate feedback, with aboveground biomass (AGB) serving as a crucial indicator of grassland health and functionality. While previous studies have independently explored the phenological differences, cumulative effects, and spatial variability of climatic impacts on biomass/productivity in alpine grasslands, the cascading effects regarding climate and phenology on AGB still present knowledge gaps. Here, using peak AGB measurements, remote sensing and gridded climate data in the QTP alpine grasslands during 2002-2018, we systematically analyzed the impact paths of climatic variables (i.

The species of the brown macroalgal genus Sargassum are distributed globally and contain many bioactive compounds. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was applied to obtain phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity from Sargassum carpophyllum collected along the coastline of Weizhou Island in the South China Sea. The influence of different variables such as the solid-liquid ratio (1:5-1:30 g · mL), ultrasonic power (160-280 W), duty circle ratio (DCR, 1/3-1/1), and ethanol concentration (30% to ~90%) were studied using a single factor design.

The vitellogenin present in the bloodstream undergoes internalization into developing oocytes through the vitellogenin receptor (VgR), a process mediated by receptor-mediated endocytosis. VgR plays a crucial role in facilitating the accumulation of vitellogenin and the maturation of oocytes. In this study, we characterized a Tachypleus tridentatus vitellogenin receptor (TtVgR) gene from the tri-spine horseshoe crab, revealing a length of 1956 bp and encoding 652 amino acid residues with 12 exons.

The increasing production and utilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and commercial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have raised concerns about their potential environmental release, with coastal sediments as a substantial sink. To better understanding the effects of these contaminants on denitrification processes in coastal marine sediments, a short-term exposure simulation experiment was conducted. We investigated the effects of single and combined contamination of phenanthrene (Phe) and AgNPs on denitrification processes in a coastal marine sediment.

We investigated spatial heterogeneity and diel variations in bacterioplankton and pico-nanoeukaryote communities, and potential biotic interactions at the extinction stage of the Ulva prolifera bloom in the Jiaozhou Bay, Yellow Sea. It was found that the presence of Ulva canopies significantly promoted the cell abundance of heterotrophic bacteria, raised evenness, and altered the community structure of bacterioplankton. A diel pattern was solely significant for pico-nanoeukaryote community structure.

Manganese (Mn) is a vital micronutrient and participates in multiple biochemical reactions and enzyme catalytic activities. Its cycling is tightly connected with iron (Fe) and nitrogen (N). Although coastal sediments are recognized as an important source of dissolved Mn to marine waters, this contribution remains inadequately quantified.

The Yellow River, renowned as the most sediment-laden river globally, grapples with sediment deposition issues compromising reservoir functionality and elevating downstream riverbeds, posing threats to human life and property safety. In response, the Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) has been innovatively implemented to address these challenges. While effectively mitigating sediment deposition, WSRS has concurrently disrupted the equilibrium of the estuarine ecosystem.
