Although sodium-glucose transport protein-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors (SGLT2i) do not increase the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) in general, they may pose a risk in patients undergoing angiography. This prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of SGLT2i for post-contrast AKI (PC-AKI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Following screening, 306 patients with T2DM selected to undergo coronary arterial angiography with or without percutaneous intervention were enrolled.

Background: Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a hemorrhagic fundus disease that can lead to permanent vision loss. Predicting the treatment response to anti-VEGF monotherapy in PCV is consistently challenging. We aimed to conduct a prospective multicenter study to explore and identify the imaging biomarkers for predicting the anti-VEGF treatment response in PCV patients, establish predictive model, and undergo multicenter validation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates adverse events (AEs) linked to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), particularly focusing on its use in the general population and pregnant women, using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System.
  • Various analytical methods were utilized, including reporting odds ratios and Bayesian approaches, to identify significant AE signals associated with LMWH.
  • Key findings revealed several notable AEs for both the overall population (e.g., anti factor X antibody positive) and pregnant women (e.g., sternal fracture), highlighting the need for more attention to the adverse effects of LMWH in clinical settings.

Background: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are present widely in the natural environment and can invade the human body through the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and skin. Immunocompromised patients are particularly prone to infection, which primarily affects multiple organs, including the lungs, lymph nodes, and skin. However, cases of NTM bloodstream infections are rare.

Background: There is increasing evidence that exposure to PM and its constituents is associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but studies on the relationship between exposure to PM constituents and the risk of GDM are still limited.

Methods: A total of 17,855 pregnant women in Guangzhou were recruited for this retrospective cohort study, and the time-varying average concentration method was used to estimate individual exposure to PM and its constituents during pregnancy. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between exposure to PM and its constituents and the risk of GDM, and the expected inflection point between exposure to PM and its constituents and the risk of GDM was estimated using logistic regression combined with restricted cubic spline curves.

Background: Previous studies reported that endometriosis may have a higher risk of arthritis. However, it remains unclear whether the association between endometriosis and arthritis has genetic correlations, or the relationship is causal. Linkage Disequilibrium Score (LDSC) and Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses use genetic variation as a natural experiment to explore genetic correlations and causal inferences from observational data, reducing unmeasured confounding factors.

Background: The global prevalence of infertility is 9%, with male factors potentially accounting for 40% to 60% of cases. Conventional treatments can be ineffective, invasive, costly, and linked to adverse effects and high risks. Previous studies have shown that, Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) can regulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-testis axis, improve sperm abnormalities and quality, mitigate oxidative stress, and decrease DNA fragmentation index (DFI).

Purpose: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is one of the long-term sequelae of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and effective symptom management in pediatric PTS remains a challenge, with interventional therapy rarely explored in this population. We present a successful case of interventional treatment pediatric PTS, resulting in a remarkable amelioration of her symptoms.

Case Report: This case features a 6-year-old girl diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia, leading to a hypoglycemic coma.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac blunt trauma can lead to a variety of injuries, but diagnosing complications from past injuries is difficult, especially if patients don't recall earlier chest trauma.
  • A case study details a patient with serious heart injuries, including myocardial dissection, and highlights three others with conditions resembling a double-chambered left ventricle, hinting at past trauma.
  • Although cardiac imaging can reveal recent injuries, untreated remote trauma might result in long-term issues like heart failure and arrhythmias, indicating that previous myocardial trauma might occur more frequently in patients than generally recognized.

Background And Objective: Diabetic foot (DF) complications often lead to severe vascular issues. This study investigated the effectiveness of enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) and its derived innovative compression strategies in addressing poor perfusion in DF. Although developing non-invasive and efficient treatment methods for DF is critical, the hemodynamic alterations during EECP remain underexplored despite promising outcomes in microcirculation.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), employing metal ions to transform endogenous HO into lethal hydroxyl radicals (OH), has emerged as an effective approach for tumor treatment. Yet, its efficacy is diminished by glutathione (GSH), commonly overexpressed in tumors. Herein, a breakthrough strategy involving extracellular vesicle (EV) mimetic nanovesicles (NVs) encapsulating iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and β-Lapachone (Lapa) was developed to amplify intracellular oxidative stress.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute ischemic stroke treatments often face challenges like high complication rates, which negatively impact patient recovery and survival.
  • Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) show promise as a potential cell therapy due to their ability to differentiate and regulate immune responses.
  • In a study conducted on rats, hucMSCs treatment improved neurological function, reduced brain tissue ischemia, enhanced postoperative survival, and lessened complications related to stress and anesthesia recovery following a stroke model.

Background: Moderate red wine (RW) consumption is associated with a low risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies have evaluated the effects of RW and white wine (WW) on inflammatory markers related to atherosclerosis in healthy individuals and high-risk subjects for CVD. This study aimed to assess the effect of RW on inflammatory markers in healthy individuals and high-risk subjects for CVD compared with moderate alcohol consumption.
