Ecological strategies identified by plant functional traits are valuable descriptors for understanding species, populations, communities, and ecosystems in response to environmental conditions. Ecological strategies, in conjunction with the functional structure of plant communities, serve as crucial tools for investigating complex relationships among the environment, vegetation, and ecosystem functions. However, it remains unclear whether the functional structure (specifically, community-weighted mean [CWM] traits) accurately reflects the optimal ecological strategies in forest communities.

Apple Valsa canker disease, caused by Valsa mali Miyabe et Yamada, severely endangers the healthy growth of apple trees. The Som1, located downstream of the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase A (cAMP-PKA) pathway, plays crucial roles in the growth, development, morphological differentiation, and virulence of filamentous fungi. In this study, we identify and functionally characterize VmSom1, a homolog of Som1, in Valsa mali.

Introduction: The research on plant leaf morphology is of great significance for understanding the development and evolution of plant organ morphology. As a relict plant, the leaf morphology typically exhibits bifoliate and peltate forms. However, throughout its long evolutionary history, Ginkgo leaves have undergone diverse changes.

Taxus plants are the exclusive source of paclitaxel, an anticancer drug with significant medicinal and economic value. Interspecies hybridization and gene introgression during evolution have obscured distinctions among Taxus species, complicating their phylogenetic classification. While the chloroplast genome of Taxus wallichiana, a widely distributed species in China, has been sequenced, its mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) remains uncharacterized.

Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are the main culprits of microbiologically influenced corrosion in water-flooding petroleum reservoirs, but some sulphur-oxidising bacteria (SOB) are stimulated when nitrate and oxygen are injected, which control the growth of SRB. This study aimed to determine the distributions of SRB and SOB communities in injection-production systems and to analyse the responses of these bacteria to different treatments involving nitrate and oxygen. Desulfovibrio, Desulfobacca, Desulfobulbus, Sulfuricurvum and Dechloromonas were commonly detected via 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

An important indicator of forest dynamics is the forest community turnover rate, which was defined as the relative change in a variable of interest (e.g., basal area or stem abundance) to its maximum or total in the community over a certain period.

Background: , as an important plant for ecological protection, is a pioneer tree species for afforestation in arid and barren mountainous areas. Lignin has the functions of water and soil conservation, strengthening plant mechanical strength and resisting adverse environmental effects and plays an important role in the ecological protection benefits of .
Methods: In this study, annual dynamic observations of the lignin content in roots, stems and leaves of one-year-old seedlings of a half-sib family were carried out, and combined transcriptome and metabolome analyses were carried out during three key stages of stem development.

A number of strict lockdown measures were implemented in the areas most affected by COVID-19 in China, including Ji'nan city, from 24 January to 7 February 2020. Due to these forced restrictions, the pollution levels in cities across the country drastically decreased within just a few days. Since traffic pollution and industrial emissions are important factors affecting regional air quality, congestion has a significant impact on the environment.

Phytoremediation technology based on living green plants would clean up water pollution. Through hydroponic experiment, the effects of different concentration of 2, 4-dinitrophenol (2, 4-DNP) on the photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of , and the absorption and purification effect of on 2, 4-DNP were measured to explore the tolerance of to 2, 4-DNP and the feasibility to purify dinitrophenol waste water by it. The biomass, actual photochemical efficiency (PSII), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and chlorophyll content of the showed downward trend with the increasing exposure concentrations of 2,4-DNP, but the intercellular CO concentration (Ci) appeared upward trend.

Stomatal regulation serves as an important strategy for plants to adapt to drought. However, the understanding of how complexes of plant-functional traits vary along the continuum from isohydry to anisohydry remains insufficient. In this study, we investigated a proxy of the degree of iso/anisohydry-the water potential at stomatal closure-and a series of functional traits of leaves and branches in 20 temperate broadleaf species planted in an arid limestone habitat in northern China.

Xylem traits are critical plant functional traits associated with water transport, mechanical support, and carbohydrate and water storage. Studies on the xylem hydraulic efficiency-safety tradeoff are numerous; however, the storage function of xylem parenchyma is rarely considered. The effects of a substantial number of xylem traits on water transport, embolism resistance, mechanical support, storage capacity and nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) content were investigated in 19 temperate broadleaf species planted in an arid limestone habitat in northern China.

A potted experiment with Populus × euramericana 'Neva' was carried out to assess whether there are positive effects of magnetic treatment of saline water (MTSW) on nitrogen metabolism under controlled conditions in a greenhouse. Growth properties, nitrogen contents, enzyme activities and metabolite concentrations were determined based on field experiments and laboratory analysis after a 30-day treatment. The results were as follows: (1) Biomass accumulation, root morphological properties and total nitrogen content were improved by MTSW.

A growing body of evidence highlights the occurrence of increased widespread tree mortality during climate change-associated severe droughts; however, in situ long-term drought experiments with multispecies communities for the prediction of tree mortality and exploration of related mechanisms are rather limited in natural environments. We conducted a 7-year afforestation trial with 20 drought-resistant broadleaf tree species in an arid limestone habitat in northern China, where the species displayed a broad range of survival rates. The stomatal and xylem hydraulic traits of all the species were measured.

The study on microbial community composition in rhizosphere soils surrounding different order roots is of great significance for understanding the interactions between roots and microbes. Using Illumina Miseq sequencing technology, this study analyzed the differences of fungal community structure in bulk soils and rhizosphere soils surrounding different root orders of poplar (Populus × euramericana 'Neva') tree. The microbial species annotation showed that 128, 124, 130 and 101 fungal genera were classified in the rhizosphere soils around 1-2 order roots (R1), 3 order roots (R2), 4-5 order roots (R3) and in the bulk soils (NR), respectively.

The light-response curve of photosynthesis is an important tool used to study plant ecophysiology and can provide a scientific basis for the response of plant photosynthetic characteristics to environmental factors. At present, there are five common light-response models of photosynthesis. To gain deeper insight into the applicability of different light-response models of photosynthesis and the photosynthetic physiological characteristics of Populus euramericana cv.
