Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiologic outcomes following supramalleolar osteotomy for early varus ankle arthritis with the medial translation of the talus, wherein the lateral translation of the talus center to the tibial axis was used as a correction target. Another aim was to compare the results between the ankles with a normal range of medial distal tibial angle (MDTA) and overcorrected MDTA at the postoperative period to investigate the role of overcorrected MDTA after the supramalleolar osteotomy.
Methods: The study comprised 90 patients (93 ankles) with Takakura stage 2 or 3a varus ankle arthritis with the medial translation of the talus, which underwent medial opening supramalleolar osteotomy with fibular osteotomy, and the mean duration of follow-up was 50.

Many fixation options exist for correction of a hallux valgus deformity with a first tarsometatarsal joint arthrodesis with pros and cons to each. Few have looked at utilizing a shape memory alloy staple made from nitinol for fixation. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a modified Lapidus technique using a nitinol (shape memory alloy) staple combined with a two-screw construct for first tarsometatarsal joint arthrodesis in correcting hallux valgus deformity.

New minimally invasive bunion surgery for hallux valgus (HV) has received attention in the last few years. A rapid growth in knowledge and techniques has been seen, with many publications, books, and experienced surgeons worldwide. Several variational advancements have emerged with the most common as a percutaneous subcapital osteotomy first metatarsal with long scaffolding minimally invasive (MI) screw placement.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes following isolated TTR and TTR combined with total ankle arthroplasty or hindfoot arthrodesis. Patients who underwent TTR were retrospectively reviewed, as a multicenter consecutive case series.

In the past few years, advances in clinical imaging in the realm of foot and ankle have been consequential and game changing. Improvements in the hardware aspects, together with the development of computer-assisted interpretation and intervention tools, have led to a noticeable improvement in the quality of health care for foot and ankle patients. Focusing on the mainstay imaging tools, including radiographs, computed tomography scans, and ultrasound, in this review study, the authors explored the literature for reports on the new achievements in improving the quality, accuracy, accessibility, and affordability of clinical imaging in foot and ankle.

As a natural progression from educational pamphlets to the worldwide web, and now artificial intelligence (AI), OpenAI chatbots provide a simple way of obtaining pathology-specific patient information, however, little is known concerning the readability and quality of foot and ankle surgery information. This investigation compares such information using the commercially available OpenAI ChatGPT Chatbot and FootCareMD®. A list of common foot and ankle pathologies from FootCareMD® were queried and compared with similar results using ChatGPT.

Most of these recommendations are based upon historical and anecdotal evidence. Furthermore, there are few reports directly comparing alignment to patient reported function.

Background: The influence of social determinants of health (SDH) on postoperative complications has been investigated in several studies, although correlation with Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) repair remains uninvestigated. SDH encompasses several factors, including insurance status and area-based measurements, including the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), which ranks neighborhoods by social disadvantage. This study investigated the correlation between patient demographics, SDH, and complications following ATR repair.

Achilles tendon ruptures are common injuries typically sustained during sport with higher incidence in men, though little is understood regarding sex-specific risk factors or outcomes following injury management. This cross-sectional clinical study and systematic review aimed to examine sex-specific Achilles tendon rupture incidence and outcomes following intervention. This study included patients who sustained a rupture between 2011-2021, were ≥18 years old, and who had a minimum follow-up of at least six months, and evaluated age, sex, sport involvement, mechanism of injury, and postoperative complications and revision.

Background: Over the past decade, overlapping procedures in orthopaedic surgery have come under increased public scrutiny. Central to this discussion is what should constitute a "critical portion" of any surgical procedure-a definition which may differ between patients and surgeons. This study therefore aimed to assess which components of three common foot and ankle procedures are considered "critical" from both the patient and surgeon perspectives.

Malalignment of the lower limb, distal tibia, foot, and hindfoot can all contribute to altered biomechanics in the ankle joint, resulting in increased focal pressure. The development of some osteochondral lesions of the ankle joint may share a similar pathophysiology, where eccentric loading to the talus or tibia within the ankle joint can lead to cartilage injury or adaptive changes. While the association between malalignment and the development of osteochondral lesions of the ankle joint may seem intuitive, the impact of realignment procedures on these lesions and patient symptoms remains a relatively underexplored topic in the literature.

Radiographic measurements for the assessment of metatarsus adductus (MTA) have a broad range of interpretation without a consensus regarding surgical indications. The "Plumbline" (PL) radiographic assessment method helps identify MTA and determines if physical space is available to align the first metatarsal to the longitudinal foot axis without the need to realign the lesser metatarsals. Forty-five neutral weight-bearing anterior-posterior (AP) radiographs of patients scheduled for surgical intervention for isolated hallux valgus (HV) or combined MTA/HV deformities were reviewed.

Background: Nonunion following foot and ankle arthrodesis can cause chronic pain and disability, poor patient satisfaction, and increased healthcare costs. Nonunion rates are reported in 10%-12% of primary foot and/or ankle arthrodesis procedures, with significantly greater rates among patients with high-risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, obesity, or Charcot neuroarthropathy. Recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor BB-homodimer with beta-tricalcium phosphate (rhPDGF-BB/β-TCP) is a bone graft substitute that has demonstrated efficacy in foot and ankle fusion rates that are comparable to autograft.

Ankle arthritis is a disabling disease pattern resulting in pain and dysfunction ultimately leading to a reduction in quality of life. Unlike more common arthritides of the knee and hip, ankle arthritis is unique in its presentation with an earlier onset of end-stage disease and an etiology, which is most-commonly posttraumatic in nature. Through continued research and design, improvements have continued to be made as newer generation implants are developed.

Nonunions are managed by general principles that govern other bone healing sites; however, when confounding with malunion, additional attention must be given. Malunited triple arthrodesis requires a thorough understanding of biomechanical and surgical principles for adequate revision surgery. Due to the rigid nature of arthrodesis surgery on a weight-bearing surface, malunited fusions have very low patient tolerance.

Background: Accurate measurement of exclusive breastfeeding is important in maternal and child health research. Exclusive breastfeeding is often measured using the 24-hour recall or the since birth method for the first 6 months. These methods can produce different estimates, introducing problems in interpreting breastfeeding behavior and making accurate comparisons across settings or countries.
