Introduction: Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are characterized by aggressive clinical course and poor prognosis. No reliable prognostic markers have been validated to date; thus, the definition of a specific NEC prognostic algorithm represents a clinical need. This study aimed to analyze a large NEC case series to validate the specific prognostic factors identified in previous studies on gastro-entero-pancreatic and lung NECs and to assess if further prognostic parameters can be isolated.

Venous ulcers (VUs) of lower limbs affect 1% of Western population. In most cases, ultrasounds show only superficial venous insufficiency (SVI), but a deep venous insufficiency (DVI) may also be present without a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). To assess SVI and DVI in DVT-positive and DVT-negative patients with VU, a retrospective cohort of 123 patients entered the study (50 male and 73 female, minimum age 29 years and maximum age 90 years, and mean 70.

Methods and Results At our institution, since 2014, internal guidelines recommended heart team consultations for patients with VHD. The clinical/echocardiographic characteristics, treatment recommendations, performed treatment, and early clinical outcomes of consecutive, hospitalized patients with VHD undergoing heart team evaluation were collected.

Background A recent study reported that the outcome of patients with plaque erosion treated with stenting is poor when the underlying plaque is lipid rich. However, the detailed phenotype of patients with plaque erosion, particularly as related to different age groups, has not been systematically studied. Methods and Results Patients with acute coronary syndromes caused by plaque erosion were selected from 2 data sets.

Background: Occupational hand dermatitis (OHD) is a skin disease occurring on employees' hands in certain jobs. Little is known about prevalence, incidence and characteristics of this adverse skin reaction and its associated risk factors during COVID-19 pandemic. To evaluate both prevalence and incidence of OHD and associated risk factors in Italian clinicians.

Unlabelled: Currently, conventional treatments for metastatic RCC (mRCC) include immune-based combination regimens and/or targeted therapies, the latter mainly acting on angiogenesis, a key element of the process of tumor growth and spread. Although these agents proved able to improve patients' outcomes, drug resistance and disease progression are still experienced by a substantial number of VEGFR-TKIs-treated mRCC patients. Following the inhibition of the VEGF/VEGFRs axis, two strategies have emerged: either specifically targeting resistance pathways, at the same time continuing to inhibit angiogenesis, or using a completely different approach aimed at re-activating the immune system through the use of inhibitors of specific negative immune checkpoints.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of high-pressure CO insufflation during TaTME on the occurrence of postoperative ileus. All patients undergoing elective transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) between April 2015 and March 2019 were included in a prospective database. Eligible patients were adults with mid and low-level rectal cancer undergoing elective TaTME with colorectal anastomosis and diverting ileostomy, following a standardized ERAS pathway.

Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli - IRCCS - Istituto di Malattie Infettive -Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Livio, Italy. Electronic address:
The therapeutic armamentarium for the treatment of patients with lymphoproliferative diseases has grown considerably over the most recent years, including a large use of new immunotherapeutic agents. As a consequence, the epidemiology of infectious complications in this group of patients is poorly documented, and even more importantly, the potential benefit of antimicrobial prophylaxis remains a matter of debate when considering the harmful effect from the emergence of multidrug resistant pathogens. The present position paper is addressed to all hematologists treating patients affected by lymphoproliferative malignancies with the aim to provide clinicians with a useful tool for the prevention of bacterial, fungal and viral infections.

Blood cell morphological identification on the peripheral blood and bone marrow films remains a cornerstone for the diagnosis of hematological neoplasms to be integrated with immunophenotyping, molecular genetics, and histopathology. Although standardization is still far from being achieved, with high interobserver variability, in recent years, several classification approaches, from the 1976 FAB to the 2016 WHO classification, have provided hematologists with detailed morphological descriptions for a large number of diseases. Counting blasts and detecting dysplastic specimens are two cornerstones of morphological diagnosis.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound worldwide impact on the laboratory hematology community. Nevertheless, the pace of COVID-19 hematology-related research has continued to accelerate and has established the role of laboratory hematology data for many purposes including disease prognosis and outcome. The purpose of this scoping review was to assess the current state of COVID-19 laboratory hematology research.

Purpose: Optimal timing of surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (Nad-CRT) is still controversial in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). The primary goal of this study was to determine the best surgical interval (SI) to achieve the highest rate of pathological complete response (pCR) and secondly to evaluate the effect on survival outcomes according to the SI.
Patients And Methods: Patients data were extracted from the international randomized trials: Accord12/0405, EORTC22921, FFCD9203, CAO/ARO/AIO-94, CAO-ARO-AIO-04, INTERACT and TROG01.
Background Seasonal variations in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) have been reported, with incidence and mortality peaking in the winter. However, the underlying pathophysiology for these variations remain speculative. Methods and Results Patients with ACS who underwent optical coherence tomography were recruited from 6 countries.

Background: Acquired von Willebrand factor (VWF) deficiency was described in Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms, especially in essential thrombocythemia (ET). VWF phenotype in contemporary patients with polycythemia vera (PV) remains less explored.
Objectives: To characterize the VWF phenotype in PV and to compare VWF phenotype in PV with matched healthy subjects and ET patients.
Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) remain a major clinical issue in patients with hematological malignancies (HMs). To confirm the efficacy and safety of the new azole isavuconazole (ISV) in a clinical care setting, we planned a multicenter retrospective study; we collected data on all possible/probable/proven IFDs in patients with HMs treated with ISV in 17 centers. Between July 2016 and November 2018, 128 patients were enrolled, and 122 were fully evaluable.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global threat and there is an urgent need for improved drugs and treatments, particularly against the drug-resistant strains of (Mtb). Graphene oxide (GO) is an innovative bi-dimensional nanomaterial that when administered accumulates in the lungs. Further, GO is readily degraded by peroxidases and has a high drug loading capacity and antibacterial properties.

Unmet medical needs are not infrequent in oncology, and these needs are usually of higher magnitude in rare cancers. The field of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) has evolved rapidly during the last decade, and, currently, a new WHO classification is being implemented and several treatment options are available in the metastatic setting after the results of prospective phase III clinical trials. However, several questions are still unanswered, and decisions in our daily clinical practice should be made with limited evidence.
