The topic of informed consent has become increasingly important in recent decades, both in the ethical-deontological field and as a duty of law. The review covered all sentences issued by the 13th section of the Civil Court of Rome during the period January 2016-December 2020. During this period, 156 judgments were found in which a breach of consent was required; in 24 of these, specific liability was proven, and the corresponding compensation liquidated.

Background: Benign Prostatic Obstruction (BPO) is the most common non-malignant urological condition among men and its incidence rise with age. Among prostate treatments, GreenLight laser seems to reduce bleeding and would be safer in the aging population.

Aims: We aimed to compare the functional outcomes and safety profile of < 75 years old (Group A) and ≥ 75 years old (Group B) patients.

Insulin Resistance and Acne: The Role of Metformin as Alternative Therapy in Men.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

December 2022

Department of Systems Medicine, Section of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, University of Rome Tor Vergata, 00133 Rome, Italy.

The association between acne and insulin resistance has not been investigated as thoroughly in males as it has been in women, despite the fact that in adult men, acne prevalence has grown. On the face, sebaceous glands produce and secrete sebum, which lubricates the skin and protects it from friction. Metformin, an insulin-sensitizing medication, may modify the association between acne vulgaris and insulin resistance (IR).

Diabetes Mellitus is a multifactorial disease with a critical impact worldwide. During prediabetes, the presence of various inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress will lead to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, insulin resistance and chronic hyperglycemia will lead to micro- and macrovascular complications (cardiovascular disease, heart failure, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and atherosclerosis).

The management of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (blast phase) secondary to myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) is extremely challenging and the outcome dismal, with a median overall survival of about 3-6 months. Effective therapeutic approaches are lacking, especially when intensive strategies followed by allogeneic transplantation are not feasible. The combination of venetoclax and hypomethylating agents has recently been established as standard for newly diagnosed, unfit patients with acute myeloid leukemia, but the application of this therapeutic modality has not been tested prospectively in the specific context of blast-phase MPNs.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to report the prognostic value of cytomegalovirus (CMV) viral load in the amniotic fluid (AF) in predicting the outcome of infected pregnancies.

Methods: Multicenter retrospective study involving 11 Italian referral centers from 2012 to 2021 was conducted. Inclusion criteria were fetuses with confirmed congenital CMV infection.

Objectives: To determine reference curves for fetal aortic and pulmonary valve annulus area by three-dimensional ultrasonography using the spatio-temporal image correlation (STIC) in the rendering mode, and to ascertain its applicability in congenital heart disease (CHD).

Methods: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of 328 normal fetuses and 42 fetuses with CHD between 20 and 33 weeks 6 days of gestation. The outflow plane view of the great vessels was used to measure the areas of the valvar annuli, and the measurements were performed in systole.

Objective: To report the quality and clinical heterogeneity of the published clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on nutrition in pregnancy. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases were searched. The following aspects related to nutrition in pregnancy were addressed: specific requirements during pregnancy, description of a balanced diet, weight gain, prevention of food-borne, nutrition in peculiar sub-groups of women, and maternal or perinatal outcomes.

Background: Allogeneic transplant is an effective salvage therapy in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) relapsed or refractory (R/R) to previous treatments. In recent years, immunotherapies (conjugated antibody and checkpoint inhibitors [CPI]) showed interesting results and were used as bridge therapies to allotransplant.

Aim: The aim of this retrospective study in Lazio region was to evaluate the impact of these new therapies on outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) in comparison with standard chemotherapies used in the past.

Fetal skeletal dysplasias involving limbs and hands are rare congenital malformations. Prenatal two-dimensional ultrasound diagnosis of fetal limb defects has a sensitivity of about 30%; however, an increased detection rate may be obtained using three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound in the rendering mode. 3-D ultrasound may be used as a complementary method providing additional information.

The upfront treatment of very elderly and frail patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is still a matter of debate. Herein, we report results of the metronomic all-oral DEVEC [prednisolone/deltacortene®, vinorelbine (VNR), etoposide (ETO), cyclophosphamide] combined with i.v.

Objective: The therapeutic landscape for localized prostate cancer (PC) is evolving. Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) has been reported to be at least not inferior to standard radiotherapy, but the effect of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in this setting is still unknown and its use is left to clinical judgment. There is therefore the need to clarify the role of ADT in association with SRT, which is the aim of the present study.

Several biologic therapies have been developed to treat moderate-to-severe psoriasis, with patients exhibiting different clinical benefits, possibly due to the heterogeneity of pathogenic processes underlying their conditions. Ustekinumab targets the IL-12/IL-23-p40 subunit and inhibits type-1 and type-17 T-cell responses. Although ustekinumab is effective as both short- and long-term treatment, therapeutic response varies considerably among patients.

The burden, microbial etiology and clinical impact of hospital-acquired respiratory infections (HARIs) were determined at an Italian teaching hospital over a 12-month period. For this purpose, overall ordinary hospitalizations ≥ 2 days of subjects over 18 years old with discharge from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2018 were examined by cross-referencing demographic and clinical data from hospital discharge forms with microbiological data from the computer system of the Microbiology Unit. We identified 329 individuals with HARIs (96 females and 233 males; median age 70 years, range 18−93), who represented ¼ of the total hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in the period.

Objectives: Shone's complex (SC) is characterized by sequential obstructions of left ventricular (LV) inflow and outflow. It can be associated with poor long-term prognosis when compared to Simple-Aortic Coarctation (S-CoA). We aimed to assess whether the degree of ventricular disproportion and 2D-speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) could improve the accuracy of prenatal prediction of SC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the prevalence and outcomes of Charcot neuro-arthropathy (CN) in patients with and without peripheral arterial disease (PAD), identifying 76 patients with acute CN.
  • Among the findings, 31.6% of patients had neuro-ischaemic CN, revealing that these individuals were older and had more severe health complications compared to those with neuropathic CN.
  • Results indicated that patients with neuro-ischaemic CN had worse outcomes, such as higher rates of minor/major amputations and hospitalization, highlighting the significant impact of PAD on neuro-arthropathy complications.

Advanced, metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) is associated with high rate of mortality because of its poor responsiveness to chemotherapy/immunotherapy. Recent studies have shown that hepcidin, a peptide hormone produced mainly by hepatocytes, is expressed by and enhances the growth of tumor cells. We here assessed whether hepcidin expression helps identify subsets of CRC with advanced and aggressive course.
