Article Synopsis
  • - Malassezia species are fungi that thrive on lipids, form part of normal skin microbiota, and can cause skin infections like folliculitis, as well as rare invasive infections in vulnerable populations like neonates and immunocompromised patients.
  • - Unlike many other invasive fungal infections, factors like low white blood cell counts and broad-spectrum antibiotics do not increase the risk of invasive Malassezia infections, which often manifest as bloodstream infections associated with catheters.
  • - Diagnosis involves identifying the fungi in biopsy samples or cultures, with a generally positive outlook for treatment; however, comprehensive treatment guidelines are lacking, and management often requires catheter removal and antifungal therapy.

Tattoos are a form of decorative body art in which pigment dyes of different colors are inoculated into the skin. It is estimated that 15-25% of general population has one or more tattoos (1), and the reasons for the popularity of this procedure may include greater social acceptance, aesthetic appeal, or perhaps the option of using laser removal techniques to eliminate unwanted tattoos. Even though modern professional tattoos are usually performed in sterile conditions, complications still occur, and with increasing numbers of people getting tattoos, the incidence of tattoo-associated side-effects presenting to dermatologists, which may be as high as 2%, is likely to increase (2).

The disease-free existence of humans is constantly under attack by a variety of infections caused by a variety of organisms including bacteria. Notable among the bacteria is which is an etiological organism for infections including impetigo, folliculitis, and furuncles. The response of the human immune system against this disease is often neutralized by the production of a pigment called Staphyloxanthin (STX) via a series of reactions mediated by several enzymes.

5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy for a refractory severe kerion: A case report.

Photodiagnosis Photodyn Ther

December 2023

Department of Dermatology, Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College, Nanchong 637000, China. Electronic address:

Kerion is a subtype of tinea capitis with a severe inflammatory response, requiring early diagnosis to prevent secondary bacterial infection, folliculitis and permanent alopecia. Oral antifungal drugs are considered the first-line treatment for tinea capitis; however, drugs therapy is challenged by the long treatment duration, side effects, and drug resistance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been widely used to treat dermatomycosis and has shown significant efficacy in recent years.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungal infections, often mistaken for conditions like eczema or psoriasis, can be difficult to identify and might be improperly treated with topical corticosteroids, leading to a condition called tinea incognita.
  • A 54-year-old man experienced a painful rash in the genitoinguinal area that was initially treated unsuccessfully with various topical antifungals and antibiotics.
  • Ultimately diagnosed with Majocchi's granuloma after thorough examination and histopathology, the patient successfully improved with a 16-week course of itraconazole, highlighting the need for awareness of such infections among non-specialist doctors.

Management of the human hair follicle microbiome by a synthetic odorant.

J Dermatol Sci

November 2023

Monasterium Laboratory Skin and Hair Research Solutions GmbH, Münster, Germany; Mediteknia, Skin & Hair Lab, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain; CUTANEON Skin & Hair Innovations, Hamburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Human hair follicles can detect scents through olfactory receptors, and using a synthetic sandalwood-like odorant, Sandalore®, boosts the production of a key antimicrobial peptide called dermcidin (DCD), which was thought to come only from sweat and oil glands.* -
  • The study explored how this increased DCD production might change the microbiome in the scalp, finding that Sandalore® not only promoted DCD but also had antimicrobial effects, helping stabilize healthier bacterial communities in hair follicles when combined with antibiotics.* -
  • Results suggest that using this synthetic odorant could beneficially influence scalp health by enhancing the body's natural defenses against harmful bacteria while supporting beneficial strains, thereby improving the overall microbiome balance.*

  • Infancy associated eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (I-EPF) is a variant of eosinophilic pustular folliculitis that occurs in children and shows distinct clinical and histological differences from classic EPF.
  • A study of two patients with I-EPF treated with topical indomethacin revealed unique patterns of eosinophilic infiltration compared to classic EPF, specifically less perifollicular and more perivascular infiltration.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis indicated that both I-EPF and classic EPF have CD4-dominant T cells, but classic EPF has significantly more CD68-positive cells; HPGDS-positive cells that promote eosinophil activity were also
