Pompe disease (PD) is an inborn error of metabolism caused by α-glucosidase acid enzyme deficiency. It significantly impacts patients' health and life quality and may lead to death in the first few years of life. Among the well-established diagnostic methods, urinary glucose tetrasaccharide (Glc) screening by high performance-liquid chromatography has been helpful in monitoring Glc levels in patients on enzyme replacement therapy, demonstrating therapy efficacy.

An integrable Hamiltonian variant of the two species Lotka-Volterra (LV) predator-prey model, shortly referred to as geometric mean (GM) predator-prey model, has been recently introduced. Here, we perform a systematic comparison of the dynamics underlying the GM and LV models. Though the two models share several common features, the geometric mean dynamics exhibits a few peculiarities of interest.

Nucleoside Hydrolases (NH) are considered a target for the development of new antiprotozoal agents. The development of new and automated screening assays for the identification of NH inhibitors can accelerate the first stages of the drug discovery process. In this work, NH from Leishmania donovani (LdNH) was covalently immobilized onto magnetic particles (LdNH-MPs) and trapped by magnets into a TFE tube to yield an immobilized enzyme reactor (IMER).

Objective: To relate the distance traveled from the patient's residence to the gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) reference center (RC) and the occurrence of unfavorable clinical outcomes, as well as to estimate the possible association between this distance and the risk of metastatic disease at presentation, the need for multiagent chemotherapy to achieve remission and loss to follow-up before remission.
Study Design: Retrospective historical cohort study of patients with GTN followed at 8 Brazilian GTN-RC, from January 1st, 2000 - December 31st, 2017.
Results: Evaluating 1055 cases of GTN, and using a receiver operating characteristic curve, we found a distance of 56 km (km) from the residence to the GTN-RC (sensitivity = 0.

Aims: To evaluate BM-MSCs and their extracellular vesicles (EVs) preconditioned with hypoxia or normoxia in experimental pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Main Methods: BM-MSCs were isolated and cultured under normoxia (MSC-N, 21%O) or hypoxia (MSC-H, 1%O) for 48 h. EVs were then isolated from MSCs under normoxia (EV-N) or hypoxia (EV-H).

Data-centric inverse problems are a process of inferring physical attributes from indirect measurements. Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is a non-linear inverse problem that attempts to obtain a quantitative physical model by comparing the wave equation solution with observed data, optimizing an objective function. However, the FWI is strenuously dependent on a robust objective function, especially for dealing with cycle-skipping issues and non-Gaussian noises in the dataset.

This research aimed to optimize surimi production with innovative raw materials called pirarucu trimmings and broken rice grains, which are by-products from food industries. The effects of three independent variables (number of washing cycles, content, and cooking temperature of rice flour-RF) on surimi's physical, chemical, and technological qualities were investigated through a Box-Behnken design. The number of washing cycles affected yield (77-93%), moisture (55-67%), lipids (18-35%), protein (7.

Background: Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare chronic auto-inflammatory systemic disease with non-specific oral manifestations, categorised as generalised variable vessel vasculitis that requires an interdisciplinary approach to diagnose due to its phenotypic heterogeneity. Whilst the oral lesions that reoccur in BD underpin the complex diagnostic process, the crucial role of dental professionals is highlighted in a case report summarised herein. We present a case of a 47-year-old male referred to the Oral Medicine Department by a rheumatologist after previous hospitalization for thrombosis of the iliac vein and inferior vena cava.

A novel conductive filament based on graphite (Gr) dispersed in polylactic acid polymer matrix (PLA) is described to produce 3D-electrochemical devices (Gr/PLA). This conductive filament was used to additively manufacture electrochemical sensors using the 3D pen. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that Gr was successfully incorporated into PLA, achieving a composite material (40:60% w/w, Gr and PLA, respectively), while Raman and scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of defects and a high porosity on the electrode surface, which contributes to improved electrochemical performance.

The problem of aligning multiple biological sequences has fascinated scientists for a long time. Over the last four decades, tens of heuristic-based Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) tools have been proposed, the vast majority being built on the concept of Progressive Alignment. It is known, however, that this approach suffers from an inherent drawback regarding the inadvertent insertion of gaps when aligning sequences.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Collagen is a protein that confers robustness and resilience to several tissues. In the female reproductive system, collagen plays a critical role in maintaining the health and function of the vaginal walls. Aging leads to collagen reduction, which may cause vaginal dryness, irritation, and prolapse.

Background: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is frequently associated with heavy proteinuria and progressive renal failure requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. However, primary FSGS also has a ~40% risk of recurrence of disease in the transplanted kidney (rFSGS). Multiple circulating factors have been identified to contribute to the pathogenesis of primary and rFSGS including soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and patient-derived CD40 autoantibody (CD40autoAb).

Student assistance (SA), regulated through the National Student Assistance Program (PNAES), seeks to meet the basic social needs of university students and is inserted in the field of public policies for higher education in federal institutions in Brazil. The program allocates financial resources in order to provide scholarships, housing, food, transport, physical and mental health, and accessibility for disabled students. The present study aims to identify the senses attributed by students of a federal public university to AE and the relationship between SA and their eating practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is a chronic disabling disease. However, there is a lack of an adequate and specific health measurement instrument validated and with good performance to assess their degree of physical disability. This led us to carry out this study and to evaluate the performance of Fiocruz's National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDS) disability scale, a specific instrument for HAM/TSP.

One of the main manifestations of leprosy is peripheral nerve impairment. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to reduce the impact of neurological impairment, which can cause deformities and physical disabilities. Leprosy neuropathy can be acute or chronic, and neural involvement can occur before, during, or after multidrug therapy, and especially during reactional episodes when neuritis occurs.

Purpose: Unlike other cells in the body, in sperm, telomere length (TL) increases with age. TL can regulate nearby genes, and the subtelomeric region is rich in retrotransposons. We hypothesized that age-related telomere lengthening in sperm might suppress Long Interspersed Element 1 (LINE-1/L1), the only competent retrotransposon in humans.

Biomolecular condensates, membrane-less entities arising from liquid-liquid phase separation, hold dichotomous roles in health and disease. Alongside their physiological functions, these condensates can transition to a solid phase, producing amyloid-like structures implicated in degenerative diseases and cancer. This review thoroughly examines the dual nature of biomolecular condensates, spotlighting their role in cancer, particularly concerning the p53 tumor suppressor.
