Chronic kidney disease is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In addition to traditional risk factors, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes and smoking, patients with chronic kidney disease have a uremic phenotype marked by premature aging, mitochondrial dysfunction, persistent low-grade inflammation, gut dysbiosis and oxidative stress. These complications contribute to abnormal vascular and myocardial remodeling processes, resulting in accelerated vascular calcification, cellular and organ senescence and a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Electronic address:

The chemokine stromal cell-derived-factor 1 (SDF)-1/CXCL12 acts by binding to its receptors, the CXC-4 chemokine receptor (CXCR4) and the CXC-7 chemokine receptor (CXCR7). The binding of CXCL12 to its receptors results in downstream signaling that leads to cell survival, proliferation and migration of tumor cells. CXCL12 and CXCR4 are highly expressed in breast cancer (BC) and glioblastoma (GBM) compared to normal cells.

There is increasing interest in the therapeutic potential of manipulating the gut microbiome of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This is because there is a substantial deviation from a balanced gut microbiota profile in CKD, with many deleterious downstream effects. Nutritional interventions such as plant-based diets with reduced animal protein intake and the use of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics may alter the microbiome.

Residual kidney function for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with better quality of life and outcome; thus, strategies should be implemented to preserve kidney function. Among the multiple causes that promote kidney damage, gut dysbiosis due to increased uremic toxin production and endotoxemia need attention. Several strategies have been proposed to modulate the gut microbiota in these patients, and diet has gained increasing attention in recent years since it is the primary driver of gut dysbiosis.

August 2023

Research Unit Analytical Biogeochemistry, Helmholtz Munich, Ingolstaedter Landstrasse 1, Neuherberg 85764, Germany.

Positive and negative electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and H NMR revealed major compositional and structural changes of dissolved organic matter (DOM) after mixing two sets of river waters in Amazon confluences: the Solimões and Negro Rivers (S + N) and the Amazon and Tapajós Rivers (A + T). We also studied the effects of water mixing ratios and incubation time on the composition and structure of DOM molecules. NMR spectra demonstrated large-scale structural transformations in the case of S + N mixing, with gain of pure and functionalized aliphatic units and loss of all other structures after 1d incubation.
