Purpose: To evaluate the effects of an intradialytic aerobic exercise training program on the expression of transcription factors nuclear factor κappa B (NF-κB) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), related to inflammatory and antioxidant pathways, respectively, in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis.

Methods: This was a longitudinal, randomized clinical trial with a washout period and crossover performed with 33 patients randomized into two groups: Exercise (individualized intradialytic aerobic exercise on an adapted stationary exercise bike) three times per week for three months and control (without exercise). After the washout period (1 month), the exercise group became the control, and the other group performed the exercises for another three months.

Ophthalmic Artery Doppler as a Predictor of Adverse Neonatal Outcomes in Women With Preeclampsia.

J Clin Ultrasound

November 2024

Unit of Fetal Medicine, National Institute of Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health Fernandes Figueira, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (IFF/Fiocruz), Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the link between Doppler indices of the ophthalmic artery and negative outcomes for newborns in pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE) using data collected from 110 patients in southeastern Brazil.
  • - Researchers measured various ophthalmic parameters and tracked multiple neonatal outcomes, such as neonatal death and low birth weight, but found no significant relationship between Doppler results and these outcomes.
  • - The findings suggest that while ophthalmic artery Doppler can help assess maternal health, it does not independently predict adverse outcomes for newborns in cases of severe preeclampsia.

The study evaluated the effects of conventional pasteurization and ohmic heating (OH) at different electric fields (12, 16, 20, or 24 V/cm) on probiotic chocolate dairy desserts' physicochemical, microbiological, sensory properties and volatile profiles. Both treatments were analyzed for parameters such as pH, syneresis, cream stability index, rheology, bioactive compounds (total phenolics and antioxidant capacity), and probiotic viability (Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-05) over a 28-day storage period. Ohmic heating at higher electric fields (20 and 24 V/cm) showed comparable results to pasteurization for most parameters, with non-significant differences or even higher values for some.

Post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC) refers to a multisystemic syndrome that persists for months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Cognitive deficits, fatigue, depression, and anxiety are common manifestations of the condition, but the underlying mechanisms driving these long-lasting neuropsychiatric features are still unclear. We conducted a prospective multi-method investigation of post-hospitalization COVID-19 patients in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Appl Environ Microbiol

November 2024

Center for Food Analysis (NAL), Technological Development Support Laboratory (LADETEC), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Cidade Universitária, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • * A unique megaplasmid, called pESM, associated with multidrug resistance and virulence has been identified, carrying genes that provide resistance to important antibiotics and enhance tolerance to environmental stressors like mercury.
  • * The study reveals that pESM likely contributes to the emergence and spread of Minnesota, which poses significant risks for human and animal infections due to its high virulence and antibiotic resistance.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific authorities were routinely consulted by mainstream media outlets through interviews, statements and/or supporting images. In this framework, our goal in this study was to analyze the media representation of scientists in Brazil during the first year of this global public health crisis. To this end, we applied a research protocol and, using statistical techniques, quantitatively analyzed newscasts on the country's main TV news program, Jornal Nacional.

Propolis possesses many bioactive compounds that could modulate the gut microbiota and reduce the production of uremic toxins in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD). This clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effects of propolis on the gut microbiota profile and uremic toxin plasma levels in HD patients. These are secondary analyses from a previous double-blind, randomized clinical study, with 42 patients divided into two groups: the placebo and propolis group received 400 mg of green propolis extract/day for eight weeks.

The decision-making process consists of finding the best solution to an analyzed problem. This search is carried out in the face of countless interactions when analyzing an alternative criterion by criterion, under which weights are assigned that distinguish the degree of importance they have for the decision-makers. The definition of weight for each criterion gives rise to three lines of thought on the subject.

Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an important transcription factor that activates antioxidant genes and increases detoxifying enzymes. Studies have shown that dietary compounds can activate the Nrf2 expression and improve the antioxidant response in patients with exacerbated oxidative stress, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of nutritional interventions on Nrf2 expression and phase II antioxidant enzymes in clinical trials in CKD.

Graduate Program in Geoscience (Geochemistry), Institute of Chemistry, Fluminense Federal University (UFF), Rua Outeiro São João Baptista s/n, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, 24.020-141, Brazil; Departament of Soil Sciences, University Federal of Ceará, UFC, Av. Mister Hull 2977, Campus do Pici, Fortaleza, Ceará, 60.440-554, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Phosphorus is crucial for mangrove productivity, which helps in nutrient cycling and carbon sequestering, but mangroves are facing degradation.
  • This study examines how soil phosphorus fractions change after mangrove restoration by analyzing various sites in SE-Brazil, focusing on factors like redox conditions, pH, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), and different phosphorus forms.
  • Results indicate that older restored mangroves have higher TOC and different phosphorus levels compared to unvegetated areas, suggesting that mangrove restoration can positively impact soil nutrient dynamics.
