Monomer size effect in inelastic collisional dynamics of non-equilibrium soot nucleation.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the collisional dynamics of the coronene-acepyrene and coronene radical-acepyrene pairs have been carried out to investigate the size effect of monomers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) on their non-equilibrium dimerization. The results compared to the previous MD simulations of the smaller pyrene-acepyrene and pyrenyl-acepyrene systems corroborate the non-equilibrium hypothesis of crosslinking PAH dimerization enhanced by physical interaction between the monomers. The phenomenon of inelastic collisional dynamics responsible for non-equilibrium van der Waals dimerization, which fosters a covalent bond formation between the monomers, amplifies with increasing PAH size.

The obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen, (Ct), has a distinct DNA topoisomerase I (TopA) with a C-terminal domain (CTD) homologous to eukaryotic SWIB domains. Despite the lack of sequence similarity at the CTDs between TopA (CtTopA) and TopA (EcTopA), full-length CtTopA removed negative DNA supercoils and complemented the growth defect of an mutant. We demonstrated that CtTopA is less processive in DNA relaxation than EcTopA in dose-response and time course studies.

Complication of Gastric Balloon in an Adolescent Patient: A Case Report.

As the prevalence of childhood obesity continues to rise, there is an increase in demand for temporary and minimally invasive alternatives to bariatric surgery as solutions for addressing pediatric obesity. Intragastric balloon (IGB) placement is an increasingly popular methodology for addressing adult obesity; however, it is not approved for the pediatric population. We describe the case of a 17-year-old adolescent female who underwent IGB placement in Colombia and failed to receive proper follow-up care in the country of insertion resulting in a gastric outlet obstruction.

Midazolam and Ketamine for Convulsive Status Epilepticus in the Out-of-Hospital Setting.

Study Objective: To determine if ketamine, when added to midazolam for the treatment of out-of-hospital seizures, is associated with an increase in the rate of cessation of convulsions prior to hospital arrival.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of out-of-hospital patients with an active convulsive seizure being transported to a hospital by a large emergency medical services system in Florida, using data from August 1, 2015 and August 5, 2024. Per protocol, patients received midazolam first for their seizure.

The association between age at diagnosis of diabetes and development of diabetic retinopathy and assessment of healthcare access as an effect modifier.

Aims: To examine if healthcare access modifies the association between age at diagnosis of diabetes and the prevalence of retinopathy.

Methods: BRFSS 2020 survey data was obtained from 12,198 adults. Participants with missing information in the variables "retinopathy" (N = 569) and "insurance-cost barrier" (N = 75) were excluded.

Routine machine quality assurance tests for a self-shielded gyroscopic radiosurgery system.

Purpose: This report describes routine machine quality assurance (QA) (daily, monthly, and annual QA) tests for the Zap-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform.

Methods: Following the recommendations of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group (AAPM TG)-142 and Medical Physics Practice guideline (MPPG) 8.b, routine machine QA tests for the Zap-X system were implemented.

Relations Between Optimism-Pessimism and Loneliness in Sexually Minoritized Men: The Moderating Role of Chronicity-Based Discrimination.

Loneliness has reached epidemic proportions, affecting nearly one-in-two adults in the United States and is particularly potent in sexually minoritized men (SMM). Individual differences in optimism and pessimism may exert protective or maladaptive effects for the impact of discrimination on loneliness. This study investigated interrelationships between optimism/pessimism, discrimination, and loneliness within a sample of sexual minoritized men (SMM).

Synergistic enhancement of hydrophobic dental adhesives: autonomous strengthening, polymerization kinetics, and hydrolytic resistance.

The leading cause of composite restoration failure is recurrent marginal decay. The margin between the composite and tooth is initially sealed by a low-viscosity adhesive, but chemical, physical, and mechanical stresses work synergistically and simultaneously to degrade the adhesive, destroying the interfacial seal and providing an ideal environment for bacteria to proliferate. Our group has been developing self-strengthening adhesives with improved chemical and mechanical characteristics.

Parkinsonian Syndrome Diagnosed via Novel Alpha-Synuclein Skin Biopsy in a Patient Presenting With Catatonic Symptoms.

The differential diagnosis of neurocognitive and psychiatric disorders, particularly when symptoms overlap significantly, poses a substantial challenge in clinical practice. Parkinson's disease (PD), Lewy body dementia, and catatonia are distinct conditions that can present with similar motor and cognitive symptoms, complicating accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. We report the case of a 45-year-old male patient who presented for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) evaluation.

Neurosurgical complications are a rich source for learning, but they are grossly underutilized for the purpose of surgeon education. Details of the complications, which make them all the more powerful as teaching tools, are restricted to morbidity and mortality conferences behind closed doors, and open discussions of the topic are blurred by hypotheticals in order to shield the presenters from medicolegal risks. In this issue of Neurosurgical Focus, 9 neurosurgeons were invited to present complications they encountered along with the details and specific lessons they learned.

The routing of blood flow throughout the brain vasculature is precisely controlled by mechanisms that serve to maintain a fine balance between local neuronal demands and vascular supply of nutrients. We recently identified two capillary endothelial cell (cEC)-based mechanisms that control cerebral blood flow in vivo: 1) electrical signaling, mediated by extracellular K-dependent activation of strong inward rectifying K (Kir2.1) channels, which are steeply activated by hyperpolarization and thus are capable of cell-to-cell propagation, and 2) calcium (Ca) signaling, which reflects release of Ca via the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IPR)-a target of G-protein-coupled receptor signaling.

Low-temperature gas-phase formation of cyclopentadiene and its role in the formation of aromatics in the interstellar medium.

The cyclopentadiene (CH) molecule has emerged as a molecular building block of nonplanar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbonaceous nanostructures such as corannulene (CH), nanobowls (CH), and fullerenes (C) in deep space. However, the underlying elementary gas-phase processes synthesizing cyclopentadiene from acyclic hydrocarbon precursors have remained elusive. Here, by merging crossed molecular beam experiments with rate coefficient calculations and comprehensive astrochemical modeling, we afford persuasive testimony on an unconventional low-temperature cyclization pathway to cyclopentadiene from acyclic precursors through the reaction of the simplest diatomic organic radical-methylidyne (CH)-with 1,3-butadiene (CH) representing main route to cyclopentadiene observed in TaurusMolecular Cloud.

Characterization of molecular interactions between HDAC7 and MEF2A.

Interactions of transcriptional corepressors such as histone deacetylase 7 (HDAC7), a class IIa HDAC, with myocyte enhancer factor-2 (MEF2) regulate MEF2 activity. Despite previous investigations exploring interactions between HDAC7 and MEF2, a detailed characterization of the HDAC7-MEF2 functional complex is still lacking. Herein, we first modeled the structure of the HDAC7-MEF2A complex and investigated the inter-protein interactions using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Attrition is a significant methodological concern in longitudinal studies. Sample loss can limit generalizability and compromise internal validity. Wave one ( = 346) and wave two follow-ups ( = 196) of the 1Florida ADRC clinical core were examined using a 24-month visit window.

Leptomeningeal metastatic disease: new frontiers and future directions.

Leptomeningeal metastatic disease (LMD), encompassing entities of 'meningeal carcinomatosis', neoplastic meningitis' and 'leukaemic/lymphomatous meningitis', arises secondary to the metastatic dissemination of cancer cells from extracranial and certain intracranial malignancies into the leptomeninges and cerebrospinal fluid. The clinical burden of LMD has been increasing secondary to more sensitive diagnostics, aggressive local therapies for discrete brain metastases, and improved management of extracranial disease with targeted and immunotherapeutic agents, resulting in improved survival. However, owing to drug delivery challenges and the unique microenvironment of LMD, novel therapies against systemic disease have not yet translated into improved outcomes for these patients.

Review of Nychia marshalli in the Western Palaearctic, with new records and distributional notes (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Notonectidae).

The backswimmer Nychia marshalli (Scott, 1872) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Notonectidae) is reported for the first time from Italy on the island of Sardinia. A new record of N. marshalli from Corsica (the first from the eastern coast) is provided and the distribution of the species in the Western Palearctic region is summarized.
