Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the clinical outcomes of lateralized reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) and RSA with latissimus dorsi transfer (LDT) in patients with poor preoperative external rotation (ER).
  • The analysis showed that lateralized RSA alone led to better postoperative ER and Constant scores while having fewer complications compared to RSA with LDT.
  • Both procedures are effective for restoring ER, but lateralized RSA is preferred due to its lower risk of nerve injuries and dislocations, although LDT may still be suitable for select patients with severe ER loss.

Aberrant and dysregulated protein-protein interactions (PPIs) drive a significant number of human diseases, which is why they represent a major class of targets in drug discovery. Although a number of high-affinity antibody-based drugs have emerged in this therapeutic space, the discovery of smaller PPI inhibitors is lagging far behind, underscoring the need for novel scaffold modalities. To bridge this gap, we introduce a biomimetic platform technology - adaptive design of antibody paratopes into therapeutics () - that enables the paratope-forming binding loops of antibodies to be crafted into large β-hairpin scaffolds ().

Article Synopsis
  • Atlantic reef-building corals are declining due to climate change, disease, pollution, and human activities, prompting a reassessment of their extinction risk under the IUCN Red List.
  • The latest evaluation shows an increase in the percentage of species at high extinction risk, with nearly 46% to 54% of shallow water corals now classified as threatened, compared to 15% to 40% in 2008.
  • Although there's been a slight improvement in coral coverage over historical data, projections indicate that severe bleaching events could significantly threaten the future survival of 26 species, which are now labeled as Critically Endangered.

Locomotion in water and on land impose dramatically different demands, yet many animals successfully move in both environments. Most turtle species perform both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion but vary in how they use their limbs. Freshwater turtles use anteroposterior movements of the limbs during walking and swimming with contralateral fore- and hindlimbs moving in synchrony.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive primary brain tumor that carries a grim prognosis. Because of the dearth of treatment options available for treatment of GBM, Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-engineered T cell and Natural Killer (NK) therapy could provide alternative strategies to address the challenges in GBM treatment. In these approaches, CAR T and NK cells are engineered for cancer-specific immunotherapy by recognizing surface antigens independently of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules.

Enhancing reef carbonate budgets through coral restoration.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Marine Biology and Ecology, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, University of Miami, 4600 Rickenbacker Cswy., Key Biscayne, FL, 33149, USA.

Complex reef structure, built via calcium carbonate production by stony corals and other calcifying taxa, supports key ecosystem services. However, the decline in coral cover on reefs of the Florida Reef Tract (US), caused by ocean warming, disease, and other stressors, has led to erosion exceeding accretion, causing net loss of reef framework. Active coral restoration, aimed at rapidly increasing coral cover, is essential for recovering reef structure and function.

Invasive species with native ranges spanning strong environmental gradients are well suited for examining the roles of selection and population history in rapid adaptation to new habitats, providing insight into potential evolutionary responses to climate change. The Atlantic oyster drill (Urosalpinx cinerea) is a marine snail whose native range spans the strongest coastal latitudinal temperature gradient in the world, with invasive populations established on the US Pacific coast. Here, we leverage this system using genome-wide SNPs and environmental data to examine invasion history and identify genotype-environment associations indicative of local adaptation across the native range, and then assess evidence for allelic frequency shifts that would signal rapid adaptation within invasive populations.
