Background: Diabetes is an increasingly important public health problem due to its socioeconomic impact, high morbidity, and mortality. Although there is evidence of increasing diabetes-related deaths over the last ten years, little is known about the population level predictors of diabetes-related mortality risks (DRMR) in Florida. Identifying these predictors is important for guiding control programs geared at reducing the diabetes burden and improving population health.

Effectiveness of a 5-day adapted swim instruction program for children with disabilities.

Background: Drowning is a leading cause of death for children. Some populations of children with disabilities, such as children with autism, experience a health disparity in drowning when compared to peers without disabilities.

Objective: This study presents a secondary data analysis of the response to intervention for a 5-day adapted swim instruction program (iCan Swim) for children with disabilities ( = 164 participants) ages 3-18 years.

Acute effects of Nordic hamstring exercise on ultrasound shear wave elastography.

Aim: The Nordic hamstring curl appears effective in reducing the incidence of injury in physically active young adults, likely through its capacity as an eccentric exercise to increase muscle stiffness. Although eccentric exercises have been shown to increase muscle stiffness, medium- and long-term Nordic hamstring curl training programs have not demonstrated an effect on muscle stiffness. This study examined the acute effects of a single session of Nordic hamstring curls on the stiffness of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus muscles using ultrasound shear wave elastography, an accepted method for measuring passive muscle stiffness.

Absolute measurement of fast and slow neuronal signals with fluorescence lifetime photometry at high temporal resolution.

The concentrations of extracellular and intracellular signaling molecules, such as dopamine and cAMP, change over both fast and slow timescales and impact downstream pathways in a cell-type specific manner. Fluorescence sensors currently used to monitor such signals are typically optimized to detect fast, relative changes in concentration of the target molecule. They are less well suited to detect slowly-changing signals and rarely provide absolute measurements of either fast and slow signaling components.

In the pressing quest of novel treatments for chronic pain, α7 nAChR silent agonists show efficacy as anti-inflammatory modulators and represent a promising strategy. Recent findings reveal that a sulfonium ion can replace the quaternary ammonium nitrogen as an alternative pharmacophore for nAChR silent activation. This study reports the design, synthesis, and electrophysiological evaluation of a new series of sulfonium-based derivatives inspired by the archetypal silent agonist NS6740.

Aerial applications of pesticides for adult mosquito control have emerged as effective tools in integrated mosquito management due to wider reach compared with ground-based methods. A key determinant for efficacy is the swath or line of spray deposition. This study aimed to assess the potential of aerial buffer sprays, which specifically target mosquito habitats, in comparison to traditional full-area aerial and ground-based applications.

Enhanced Resistance to Pokkah Boeng Disease in Sugarcane Through Host-Induced Gene Silencing Targeting FsCYP51 in Fusarium sacchari.

Pokkah boeng disease (PBD), a common and highly destructive disease of sugarcane, is mainly caused by Fusarium sacchari. Breeding sugarcane resistant to PBD is challenging due to the limited availability of immune or highly resistant germplasm resources. Host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) based on RNA interference (RNAi) is a promising disease-control method that offers strong disease-targeting ability with low environmental impact.

A juvenile spinner shark in southern New England: A rare visitor or a sign of change?

A juvenile spinner shark, Carcharhinus brevipinna, was captured and released in the coastal waters of Rhode Island, USA, where range delineations based on historic records of spinner sharks and the species' congener, the blacktip shark, Carcharhinus limbatus, are plagued by misidentification. The shark in question was within the size range of neonates for C. brevipinna and bore a partially healed umbilical wound.
